wonderful. i was born 24 years after live aid. sucks to have not been there for it, but maybe i was in a past life. at least there are people who come and talk about their 80s experiences! right now i’m on the hunt for a suzuki omnichord. it’s a trainwreck trying to find one for cheap, but thrift stores might assist me! fingers are crossed always. thank you for sharing this !
Oh Paul you brought back some amazing memories for me. I remember getting up at 4am to start watching everything in London and then in the USA. I live in Canada. My cousin's and I were in awe of all the musicians. So many artists we loved. Still a treasured memory.
This is so cool. My sisters husband taped the whole show also. But he doesn't have any of the news reports or preview shows. That was cool. I remember being excited about the Sabbath reunion. I was big into them at the time. Cool man. Keep up the videos.
funny thinking back how many of us were sitting in front of the TV that warm summer day and recording it all day. truly historic. gotta love that simon lebon sound byte. yikes.
I love the Live Aid concert! I was born too late to watch the original broadcast, but my dad bought the DVD set you mentioned when it came out and introduced me to all the great performances. Queen and U2 were definitely the best, a long with Sting, Dire Straits, The Cars, Madonna, and Status Qou. I think the Wembley concert was far, far superior to the one in Philly. For one the footage is much clearer and in better quality. The camera angles are better as well. In Philadelphia the camera crews were very limited in what the could do to capture the performance, but at Wembley there was pretty much free to roam the stage and get the best angles possible. In Queen's set you can even see Freddie Mercury grab the cameraman and start singing into the lense. The crowd starts roaring when he does it because theyre all watching the video moniter. I could go on and on about Live Aid, but this was a great video! Although some people thought that live Aid was kind of a scam, like Frank Zappa for example. Even if it was a scam, theres no denying that it was a magical day for rock n roll!
I was lucky as we had MTV and they played it all day switching between London and Philly. I had to work that mid and into the evening so I listened to it on the radio and watched video later. My favorite part was the Hall and Oates set along with them acting as the house band for the Temps, Tina and Mick....
Queen stole the show that day I remember reading somewhere when they finished David Bowie jokingly said to everyone well we should all go home we won’t be needed here
I remember when the live aid box set first came out on dvd I begged my mom to get it !!! So many good performances, the ozzy / sabbath reuniting was my favourite I want to say partly due to ozzy being so fired up!
Hey paul, the weird part of live aide was ,when they sang we are the world, Michael Jackson wasnt there to help sing the song.I was devestated paul, because when you look back, i can remember Michael Jackson was the biggest Pop Star in the 🌎 world! It sure was a pain in the ass going thru diffrent channels.I also taped live aide on a kodak vhs tape. just like you bud. Those kodak vhs tapes were the best! Awww memories. The 80s time period was the best.☺
troy rogalinski I read online that they turned the sound up right before Queen went on so that they would be louder than everyone else. Supposedly that made them sound better. I think they were probably the best band there that day, period!
I missed most of Live Aid since I was working all day at my first job, Mcdonalds. But hey, if McDonalds was good enough for Daniel Johnston it's good enough for me. I caught the Madonna set in the break room that afternoon with the oddity of the Thompson Twins joining her onstage. I think I caught a little of George Thorogood too and Queen. Later that evening I raced home just in time to see Mick and Tina followed by Dylan and Ron Wood. Dylan famously made the remark about helping farmers and thus, Farm Aid, was on its way to being born. One of these days I need to break down and buy the DVD set. Thanks for sharing Paul. That day is still exciting to me after all of these years even if much of my memory of it is intertwined with cooking burgers.
***** You could get up to 6 hours on a normal VHS tape, depending on what speed you used. There were also 8 hour tapes, they cost a little bit more. And 10 hour tapes, but they are pretty rare. They also were not good for the motors in VCRs.
A friend of mine told me recently that Dave Grohl came up with a solution to ending world hunger during a concert. Three steps: Gather food, ship food, distribute food. Kinda a no-brainer if you ask me. Then again, if one looks at the big picture to this experience, it really is not difficult to grasp and take action.
sean marshall I don't think I have anything specifically about the Bad tour. I taped a lot of news about different music and artists so I still have to go through it all and see what I can upload.
sean marshall look up the user hezakaya starr here on youtube. He keeps posting and re-posting a huge 2 hour compilation of News Reports, Commercials. MTV News, ET segments, etc. pertaining to the Bad tour. NOT that I recommend anyone leaving Weird Paul's channel haha
ORIGINAL VLOGGER 80'S WEIRD PAUL That it would! And it'd be good for me because I haven't even seen it yet! If they don't, I may need to stop by for a visit sometime.
ORIGINAL VLOGGER 80'S WEIRD PAUL Also, I couldn't help but notice the design on the box of that video tape. I've got a bunch of Kodak Betas that look just like that. I've got one that's still sealed. Saving it for something special!
Funny, but I remember so much from 1985 (including alot of MTV watching) EXCEPT for Live Aid. I guess I just missed it or didn't care. I do remember "We Are the World" though. Still super-cool you recorded it. But I'm guessing one tape wasn't enough to record everything?
Vebinz The entire concert lasted for 16 hours. But, you have to add in the fact that it was taking place on two continents, so to tape it you would need much more tape than that. Add in all the news reports, etc and you are looking at maybe 30 hours of footage. I only taped about 5 hours total. But that was all the tape I had!
I was born in 1966. I think I was a senior in high school when this came out. I managed and was Partners in the video store. I was doing cocaine and taking a taxi to school. Couldn't spend the money fast enough. The store is called video Olympics. I sold bronze silver and gold memberships. It cost $35 for bronze 100 for a silver membership and $200 for a gold membership. If you remember you didn't have to leave a deposit and you get rent up to five movies. Non-members had to leave a $50 deposit per movie. I sold 4000 bronze memberships at $35 each.. back to Live Aid. I stayed up and watched that thing as it was broadcasted. I watched Phil Collins come over on a Jet Plane and play both continents. That's what I was turned on to Boomtown Rats to this day. I taped it on beta. Then some prick there's some prick taped over it for the Super Bowl that year. Don't worry that guy's dead now
Fexican Kringle I have had pretty decent luck with most of my tapes. I noticed that some spots on the cheaper tapes where I had taped over things are in much worse shape, some barely watchable.
Hey Paul great vid,I have a quick question to ask the analog master,I have a whole stack of old vhs tapes I recorded off tv,what would you recommend being the best way to copy tape to tape, because I don't wanna wear out the original copy but still want a vhs copy?if you could help that would be great!!!!
Well, anytime you play an old tape you have to worry about it wearing out. But the less it has been played in the past, the less you need to worry. I would suggest making the new copy in SP mode even if the old one isn't and you have to use multiple tapes.
Talk about an All star lineup! That's so funny. My dad recorded this as well using that same Kodak tape. How much did tapes cost back then? I remember the first time I ever bought a blank tape on my own was a 3-pack of Scotch tapes in 1990, cost me 9.99.
I was at the real Live Aid at JFK Stadium. It was in Philadelphia. It was a awesome show.👍👍✌✌😃😃 What live aid was missing was Michael Jackson. If he would of preformed, it would of been Epic !!!!!
+Diesel Confederacy I always used it in long play. Because tapes were somewhat expensive and I didn't have any money. So I needed to use every second of that 6 hours.
Wow that's great it's on UA-cam now UA-cam is good and bad only because you can find everything and anything but if you lose your phone or drop it you're out of luck
Have you ever seen the Bob Geldoff Spitting Image song "We're Scared of Bob"? ua-cam.com/video/41mMxnj_6xg/v-deo.html It was the B side song of The Chicken Song which was at Number 1 for ages over here in the '80s. You might recognize the show's puppets from Genesis' Land of Confusion.
ORIGINAL VLOGGER 80'S WEIRD PAUL :D You should check out "The Chicken Song" online too, first record I ever bought as a kid. but you might like Spitting Image, topical satire on 80's life. There's a few episodes on UA-cam.
I believe I may have seen bits of it. Now I don't know. I think I'm getting PARANOID! We are the World, I had that album, but think I might have donated it to little children.

pure gold Paul. great post ! i remember that concert it was very exciting it was like our generations Woodstock.
Fexican Kringle Thank you, I am very glad you enjoyed it!
Oh Paul you brought back some amazing memories for me. I remember getting up at 4am to start watching everything in London and then in the USA. I live in Canada. My cousin's and I were in awe of all the musicians. So many artists we loved. Still a treasured memory.
That's great. I am watching some of Live-Aid right now and it's such a great feeling of remembering how exciting it was then.
I never forget live aid concert
I just got the DVD set the other day, I am going to watch it again
You rock! I love watching all of this old footage very nostalgic
The live Aid concert was amazing! Possibly one of the biggest concerts in history. Although I wonder if Live Aid is still a thing today...
It really was amazing, such an event.
This is so cool. My sisters husband taped the whole show also. But he doesn't have any of the news reports or preview shows. That was cool. I remember being excited about the Sabbath reunion. I was big into them at the time. Cool man. Keep up the videos.
topperlongo Thank you and thanks for watching!!
Well done! Love your documentary and footage on this concert. This has always been a huge favorite of mine. Thank you for sharing!!
Thanks Jerry!
funny thinking back how many of us were sitting in front of the TV that warm summer day and recording it all day. truly historic. gotta love that simon lebon sound byte. yikes.

NostalgiaVHS Agreed! It was an amazing lineup, it was amazing then and in retrospect, it still is!
I remember it well. Also made a similar tape - taped it all from Dutch, German and UK Television. :)
lactobacillusprime That's so cool!
Dutch television? can you upload it somewhere so I can view it? I'm Dutch myself and have been trying to find a tape from Dutch TV for ages!
Great footage there WP. I remember watching it as well.
Jag Betty Thanks! It was definitely one of the best days of TV watching I ever experienced!

The only part that I watched the other day to celebrate was Hall & Oates doing "Maneater"
Queen stole the show that day I remember reading somewhere when they finished David Bowie jokingly said to everyone well we should all go home we won’t be needed here
I remember when the live aid box set first came out on dvd
I begged my mom to get it !!! So many good performances, the ozzy / sabbath reuniting was my favourite I want to say partly due to ozzy being so fired up!
I saw the bit where it says "Dire Straits" and thought "why are they showing Sting?" and then I remembered that he wanted his MTV
Glen K. Amo He sure did!

That's a great memory of watching Madonna in the break room.
I didn't even know a video tape could play that much

this video was awesome. Phil Collins, Queen, and Sting in one video...omg!!
Thanks! That was the best concert of all time, I am still excited that I got to be alive and old enough to watch it when it happened!
A friend of mine told me recently that Dave Grohl came up with a solution to ending world hunger during a concert.
Three steps: Gather food, ship food, distribute food.
Kinda a no-brainer if you ask me. Then again, if one looks at the big picture to this experience, it really is not difficult to grasp and take action.
andrew vincent It would be great if somehow this was implemented.
It will happen when we as a species, the human species, comes together to understand a common cause.
I loved Judas Priests performance. All their amps were plugged in so Rob had to deal with a lot of monitor feedback 😂
I had the DVD box set, and I think the best performances were from Queen and Judas Priest.
Judas Priest was not shown on broadcast TV in America, which was sad. I had to wait until the DVD came out to see it!
This was amazing
Itz Toxic_ Thank you! I put a lot of time into it, because I loved Live Aid!
Such amazing event loved the cars performance do u have any footage from Michael jacksons bad tour 1987 to 88 commercials or news reports

I hope all the major networks re-air Live Aid on July 12...... That way, this generation could witness music history! That would be awesome to see!
TheSkullArmyMC That sure would be something!

ORIGINAL VLOGGER 80'S WEIRD PAUL Yeah, it's in a drawer somewhere. I might have to fish it out if Live Aid re-airs.
Funny, but I remember so much from 1985 (including alot of MTV watching) EXCEPT for Live Aid. I guess I just missed it or didn't care.
I do remember "We Are the World" though.

Queen the best live aid presentación in my personal opinión

I always used every second of every tape...until it ran out!
ORIGINAL VLOGGER 80'S WEIRD PAUL 📼
If only I was alive, when it happen.
Why not send the VHS to a studio to see if they can digitally restore it and release the lost footage to the public?
They would probably get sued.
Paul..when you recorded ......did you record in long play or short play?
+Diesel Confederacy I always used it in long play. Because tapes were somewhat expensive and I didn't have any money. So I needed to use every second of that 6 hours.
Me too!
God I wish I was alive back then
Cool bit of history there. Ozzy Osbourne preempted the ice bucket challenge :)
creamofcardstv haha, yes!
I wonder why Kiss wasn't there
Wow that's great it's on UA-cam now UA-cam is good and bad only because you can find everything and anything but if you lose your phone or drop it you're out of luck
