  • Exploring Lelystad, Netherlands.
Lelystad is a municipality and a city in the centre of the Netherlands, and it is the capital of the province of Flevoland. The city, built on reclaimed land, was founded in 1967 and was named after Cornelis Lely, who engineered the Afsluitdijk, making the reclamation possible. Lelystad is approximately 3 metres (9.8 feet) below sea level.
Lelystad is built on the seabed of the former Zuiderzee. About 6500 years ago this wetland was above high tide level and inhabited; the Netherlands have steadily subsided since. Near Lelystad at Swifterbant, the oldest human skeletons in Western Europe were discovered. Due to rising water levels and storms, the peatlands were washed away, and the Lacus Flevo (in Roman times) grew to be the Almere (Middle Ages) and became the Zuiderzee. The Zuiderzee (Southern Sea) was the main transport route from Amsterdam to the North Sea and the Hanseatic League cities. Due to the many shipwrecks in Flevoland, Lelystad now houses the National Centre for Maritime History, with a museum and the shipyard that has built the Batavia replica.
After the Second World War the Zuiderzee Works continued, constructing the polder of Eastern Flevoland. In 1950 work commenced on several construction islands in the middle of the IJsselmeer. Lelystad-Haven was the largest island, and its wooden barracks housed a community of dyke-builders. In 1955 they reached the mainland, which made it possible to drive to Lelystad by car. One of the three pumping stations, which drained the polder in June 1957, was the diesel-powered Wortman in Lelystad-Haven. Until 1967 the only inhabitants of Lelystad were technical engineers and laborers and superintendents, living on the former construction island.
Lelystad is the largest municipality in the Netherlands in area, but a large part of that area is water: Markermeer and IJsselmeer. Another major area is the internationally famous nature park of Oostvaardersplassen, which arose naturally when the polder of South Flevoland was drained. Lelystad is also surrounded by a square of woodlands and parks and flat farmland. The importance of the landscape and sky is emphasized by several pieces of land art: engineers' work and works such as the Observatorium by Robert Morris.
The artificial islands of Marker Wadden lie immediately to the northwest of Lelystad. Construction started in 2016, and the first islands have already become important wildlife sites, with many species of birds coming to the islands during the breeding season.

This is the kind of film I've been waiting for. Lelystad is my favourite city, I lived there for a few years and worked there and I miss this city very much, I have nice memories of this city. Very nice and kind people live there. I'd love to see a video from Saturday as there is a market behind the hotel and another small center where there is a Lidl and a shell gas station around the bastion

It's nice to reminisce about the time when I lived in Lelystad and walked through the streets of the center on Sundays and watched the landscapes of the beautiful streets. I miss this city, this city has something attractive about it, I am in love with this city and I would like to live there again one day

I agree that it is not a lively city.
But, Batavia is a great place to spend a day and a fun place for kids and adults alike.

That's so wrong lol. There are not many newer cities with similar size, that have so many tourists. Lelystad has over 4 million each year, it has 3 museums, 3 nature areas of national status/importance (natuurpark is quite good too, basically a free mini zoo), the otters are so cute.
Then you have the harbor that is consistantly ranked best in its kind. So on so on, alas, you are wrong.

@@letheas6175 well, maybe your old. For old people its great. I'm not old. And yes, when I have the chance, I will move to a real place. Not this crappy shithole.

@@khoshnaw Nope I grew up in Lelystad and left only recently after 27 years of living there. The only reason why I left, is because Amsterdam is my favourite city in all of Europe, so if you have the chance to live in your favourite city you would- but otherwise I would have never left as I feel many cities are less good in terms of livability. Again also backed up by facts, for me at least, since if you love nature, Lelystad is one of the greenest cities in indexes. Furthermore as I said, there is plenty to do. Compared to Almere, that has no museums btw, Lelystad also statistically has more shops. If you look at Lelystad at what it is: a tiny city, you'll not get any wrong ideas of what it should be since again- for a small city, it has everything and more.

@@letheas6175 I would almost say you're a lobbyist. Lelystad no longer has true shopping centers for the citizens nor is there a hospital. The Lelystad Center was established in the early '60s and is now practically a ghost center. The Gordiaan is no longer a main center either, given the vacancies and the many stores where people now live. There is a lot of poverty in Lelystad as well. Hardly anyone goes to Batavia Stad; it's more for tourists with a program who take a bus tour between Enkhuizen and Lelystad and don’t know any better. Lelystad has a lot of dilapidated housing, and there’s nothing for the youth. There's no need to come for nature either, as the Netherlands is already rich in nature and forests, like the Veluwe and literally 100 other places. I'm glad to hear that you think it's so great, but many people feel differently. I do notice that those over 55 seem to love it here. Good for them.
