1950 is the best movie version. It’s not the most accurate but Robert Newton’s portrayal of Long John helped create the pirate method we all cherish today. No Jack Sparrow without John Silver.
Not really. Robert Newton was a bit of a buffoon, as Wallace Beery before him. The best Long John Silver, "by a long sea mile", was Charlton Heston, and his Treasure Island, "filled to the scuppers" with great actors the likes of Pete Postlethwaite, Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee, Julian Glover, even Christian Bale, is the best movie made from this book, ever.
The Charlton Heston and Christian Bale version with Heston's son directing is the most complete version. You want to reread the book after viewing this version.
Yes, but only if they can do it right. The trend recently has been to add lots of CGI and play fast and loose with the source material. Think of recent Sherlock Holmes and Three Musketeers adaptations. Simply dreadful. I vote instead for a BBC production!
Hollywood is incapable of this today without adding their insufferable woke nonsense. We already have the perfect version with the perfect cast....1990!
I think it's interesting that Jackie Cooper and Bobby Driscoll both did versions of Treasure Island, as they were both the biggest male child stars of their respective eras. You can see how their different appeals played out while portraying the same character. Cooper always had that up-for-anything street kid appeal, where as Driscoll was always the wide eyed innocent experiencing everything for the first time.
How can you discuss the 1990 film and not mention soundtrack by The Chieftains? Also the use of an actual ship (The Bounty.. sadly lost several years ago). I tell people all the time that the 1990 version of Treasure Island is hands down the best adaptation of a book into a movie that I've seen.
Agreed. The musical soundtrack is absolutely first rate. Fraser Heston, son of acting legend Charleton Heston, did a magnificent job. The photography, the performances, costumes, ship, and everything are first rate about the film. Some complained that Charleton Heston was too serious, but the book is a harrowing account of a young man suddenly thrown into a fight for his life and searching for his identity. Young Christian Bale is hands down the best Jim Hawkins that I have seen.
I don't have anything against Disney, all the contrary. But Treasure Planet was the typical bowdlerization of a story, along with Pocahontas, Hunchback, and Mulan.
Never thought I would like to watch the movie. Your video changed my mind, I might watch it now. I like books and movies about friendships and loyalty. Thanks.
After watching the National Theatre's production of Treasure Island (with Arthur Darvill as Silver, and a female Jim Hawkins and doctor character), I found myself interested to watch some of the other adaptations as well. I think Muppet Treasure Island is pretty fun, but there's definitely some things I would've trimmed from the story. For one, I think Jim has to compete for attention since he's paired up with Gonzo AND Rizzo, and most of the time, he's just not as fun to watch. Tim Curry does a really good job of treating the material seriously. I'd be interested to know what you think of Treasure Planet! That one seemed to be the one that was the most focused on the relationship between Silver and Jim. -S
Hey there Scrivener, fancy seeing you here! I watched Treasure Planet for the first time myself last week, and I really, really enjoyed it, especially the handling of Jim & Silver's relationship, as well as mature topics such as abandonment and choosing between friends or greed. Before that, I had only seen the Muppet version, and without a doubt Tim Curry's performance is my favorite thing about it; and you're right, it does feel like Kevin Bishop (Jim) had to somewhat struggle to keep up whilst working with Rizzo and Gonzo. But I'm not surprised that you enjoyed it, considering how passionate you were about Muppet Christmas Carol :). Anyway, I'd love to see you do a full review on it at some point (if you haven't already, that is). 😄
I love the prequel book Flint and Silver by John Drake. If provides so much information about how these classic characters became pirates. Unfortunately his other novels take too much liberty later but Flint and Silver is true to the original! I would love to see it on the big screen!
I love the book and remember, still, reading it before sleeping as a 8/9yo and feeling very much like Jim. But I don't know any of the adaptations in the video (I would watch them in the future for sure), because the first, and only one, I knew it was an old, old TV Serie made by RAI (the Italian public broadcasting TV) in B&W from the 50s (I think) that was brougth back when I was a chldren much later. I wonder if the book has lost some of its appeal for the contemporary children since the adventure is mostly rooted in "time" rather than "space" exoticism now-
Like the muppet version, Jim Hawkins in my own version of Treasure Island has two best friends. Their names r Sam & Peter, two orphaned boys who live with jim & his mother & help them run the Admiral Benbow Inn since both their parents died. Jim & his mother were so kind to them, taking them both in & giving them a roof over their heads & food every day. Sam & peter accompany their best friend, jim Hawkins on the hispaniola to help him find flintstones treasure. They did become jealous when jim spends more time with Long john silver than with them but jim assures them that hes only a new friend & he still has them. When all three of them r eating apples inside the apple barrel, they overhear long john revealing to be a treacherous pirate, talking to the pirate crew & their evil plan of mutiny!
Funny you didn´t include the 1972 version with Orson Welles. Awful all the way, but still a version that should be included. There was also a tv version in several parts made in 1966 by french / german team.
5:31. Whimsical… Hmmm… “ And those buccaneers, drown their sins in rum. The devil himself would have to call them scum. Every man on board would have killed his mate, for a bag of gunnies or a piece of eight.” “ I love to see them cry, when they walk the plank. I prefer to cut a throat. I love to hang ‘em high and see them try to walk in the air, while their faces turn blue”. And need me forget the horrible, and graphic death of Dead Tom.
Well, oddly (or not), my favorite is not an adaptation but a sequel! "Return to Treasure Island" with *Brian Blessed* as Silver! ua-cam.com/play/PLLB4a-Z9x4-XhSKHN-ZFuN8BjvtVhz40P.html

I AGREE ,NEWTON WAS THE BEST .NO ONE WILL EVER COME CLOSE TO HIS PERFORMANCE!

The cabin fever song from the muppets is one of their best songs!
LOVE Muppet Treasure Island -- I mean, Tim Curry rocks it.
We're long overdue for a new Treasure Island film adaptation.
Yes, but only if they can do it right. The trend recently has been to add lots of CGI and play fast and loose with the source material. Think of recent Sherlock Holmes and Three Musketeers adaptations. Simply dreadful.

@@arnoldronning5471 Same here
As a direct sequel to Black Sails
Hollywood is incapable of this today without adding their insufferable woke nonsense.
We already have the perfect version with the perfect cast....1990!
No, we are not. the 1990 version was the crowning gem of these movies, and it should stand forever as the best.

What about Treasure Planet?? 😭
Yeah. Good question 👍
The amazingness of that movie cannot be contained on merely one list. Same with Muppet Treasure Island.
I'd love to see a book vs movies of the secret garden ☺️
Wonderful video! I love treasure island. Its a fun book to read aloud to kids. These movie adaptions were fun.
The 1990 and Muppet versions of the story are my favourites. Along with Treasure Planet of course.
I don't have anything against Disney, all the contrary. But Treasure Planet was the typical bowdlerization of a story, along with Pocahontas, Hunchback, and Mulan.
@@perfesser944 I mean, that was Disney's bread an butter for 50 years when it came to their animated movies at the time so I fail to see the issue.
You forgot the 1999 film staring Kevin Zegers as Jim Hawkins and the late Jack Palance as Long John Silver.
I'm not Jim Jim Jimmy Jim Jim. He's Jim Jim Jimmy Jim Jim!
Jim? Yes Captain? Jim Jimmy Jim Jim Jim Yes Captain what it?
Wuthering Heights would be a breakdown I would like to see. Great vids by the way!

As much as I love the 1990 version, how could you not also love Tim Curry as Long John.
Muppet Treasure Island is my favorite.
I love Treasure Island 1990 Live Action Movie
Please eventually do a video for Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein and Dracula as well! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

You should see the 2011 version starring Eddie Izzard
Eddie did really well in the part.
There is also old anime made in 70th were the best vision for this novel
