Makes sense considering that the Empire is the medieval Catholic Church, the Sardaukar were the Templars, the Harkonnen were brutal Norman mercenaries employed by the Church to enforce it's conquests, Atreides are the English during the Third Crusade, and the Fremen were the Mamluks and Ayyubids. The entire story was based off of the power dynamics of the High Middle Ages and the Crusades era.
