Nice pamphlet that comes with the blade. Yours has been sitting around for almost 4 years. That probably why it is dry. I'd re-oil the handle with a quality food grade oil, perhaps even walnut oil. I like the locking mechanism. Nice review! Opinel normally uses Beech Wood.
As a lumber mill kiln operator I do not recommend food grade oil or walnut oil. I do recommend Formby's Lemon oil or a very light coat of raw linseed oil, as it will penetrate the wood without degrading the structural bond of the wood fibers.
The Old Bear is a cool knife. I've got two Opinels and one Antonini. The Opinels came razor sharp right out of the box but my Antonini was extremely dull. Had to put an edge on it. The thumb lock was slot more convenient than the twisting collar of the Opinels though.
The M.A.M. from Portugal are also excellent. Perfect companion for Antonini and Opinel. Those peasants knifes are ultra slicey and boy can "razor plus" with a quick stropping. Dream to pocket.

Thanks for the tip Jolly. Just recently put some Howard Feed n Wax on the handle and it soaked it up like a sponge. It was thirsty. The handle looks much better now.

Also locking knives are perfectly legal to carry if you have a good reason in U.K. Whilst we can’t edc a locking knife they are fine if out camping, bush crafting or just out for a picnic.

The handle on the Opinel is Beech altough they do Olive wood and many others, I have the Old bear and it is nice but it is not so good to use as the Opinel, much better steel on the Opinel and better cutter, I use them in the house as we can't carry in public has you know, as for doing reviews don't worry we still like to see what knives are available it's not illegal to own them, I have several I can't carry but still like to own.
I appreciate that you still want to own the ones you can't carry. At least all those sowbelly satisfy your laws. I was drawing a blank (these things are only loosely scripted, if at all 😁) on the Opinel wood type. Thanks again Lewis.
I do like simple knives. Without putting too fine a point on it 😜, I think you should just review good knives for the sake of reviewing good knives. Here in the UK we can still appreciate good Steel without taking it outdoors. Easily 70% of my knife collection has to stay indoors but I still love the designs and craftsmanship. Keep doing the fine job you’re doing brother 🔪👍.

I really like the brass lock on this knife. I just think the Opinel as a whole is better.

Nice review, I just saw those Old Bear knives in my new SMKW Catalog.
They are I dare say every bit as good as Opinel with a more functional lock.

I own several Antonini Old Bear's great slicey knives i use them a fair bit.. I stain & Bee's Wax the handle makes them waterproof & grippy...

It was really dry, Howard Feed n Wax did the job. Looks real nice now. Felt that way about myself before getting the new 110. Thanks Su.

Antonini knife always seem a bit more “upscale” than Opinel, but I still think the Opinels are more comfortable in hand. Both are really nice though.
