As a resident of Western North Carolina, US. The forests upon Appalachia would have looked much different even just 150 years ago. Many locations are named after the Passenger Pigeon and the fabled American Chestnut. Both of which were extremely prevalent across the eastern US and the Appalachian Mountains. The valleys would be filled with the gigantic flocks of tens of thousands or even millions of pigeons migrating through the valleys. This could be seen from the mountain tops where passenger pigeons and monarch butterflies would be observed during migratory periods during spring and fall. There were so many pigeons that hunters and farmers would go out and hunt them during their migrations to collect enough food to make it through winter (which was quite a challenge back then, as getting through winter was a matter of having enough wood and food prepared for long term storage to survive until spring). This hunting and natural predation led to the extinction of the passenger pigeons. If you’re ever in the area, remember that most references to pigeons when it comes to locations in Appalachia are old locations in reference to the passenger pigeons and their migratory routes. Such as “Pigeon River” or “Pigeon Gap”. Then the American Chestnut was also a huge deal back in its day. American Chestnuts we’re about 1/3 (3-5 billion trees) of all the trees in their dominant range before what is called “Chestnut Blight” came through and killed almost all of the American Chestnut trees in existence. Less than 100 known surviving trees have been found, all of which have survived the blight in various ways. The blight was introduced in 1904 in New Jersey on a nursery stock of Japanese and Chinese Chestnut trees which are both resistant to blight. The blight (Cryphonectria Parasitica) was first detected that same year in the Bronx Zoo in NYC. From 1904 to the 1950s, the entire East Coast was completely ravaged, with almost all of the trees being killed by the blight. If you look at some of the old photos, it looks like a massive fire or nukes burned the woods down on the scale of mountain ranges. American Chestnuts used to control tons of undergrowth in the forest and supply the entire ecosystem with billions if not trillions of nutrient rich chestnuts that were sweet and easily found just about anywhere during fall when then trees mast (shed their fruit or nuts). People used to collect the chestnuts and sell them to the cities for anything from heavily processed things like shoes and tools; even paying for many people’s schooling and college, giving the tree the name “the college tree”. Farmers would let their stock into the woods to feed on the chestnuts. To this day, we are not entirely sure how much the ecosystem has been affected by the loss of the tree. But it was incredibly significant. The forest is nothing like what it was because of it. Less wildlife, different trees being prevalent, large amounts of undergrowth in the woods, and everyone losing money from its loss. A cool fact, the Cherokee used to call the Appalachian Mountains “The Great White Mountains” because of the blooms of the chestnut trees along the ridges of the mountains.
The thylacine, also known as the tasmanian tiger or tasmanian wolf, is one of my favorites. I like how they have some different fur variants like brown or grey, i also like how these marsupials looked a little bit like wolves. lastly, I like how they are pack hunters just like wolves

I somehow feel sad watching this and I don't know why, I just feel quite sorry for the nature missing all these animals. The most saddening thing is that if you ever want to see any of these animals with your own eyes, you can't, you can only imagine their movement, their sound and their behaviour.
Animals have been going extinct for millions and millions of years. One day, everything we know will be extinct, including us. Humans aren't going to last forever. However, provided that we don't wipe out EVERY living creature, earth will rebound and life will evolve just like it always does.
I think we should build a giant Jurassic-Park-style zoo for all these extinct species. I believe that it could be possible given how many of the extinct species might still have genetic information of them somewhere.
i believe the colonization (like their own bloodsports, such things more) caused the most damage towards not only the native people but native animals too.. :(
Native people weren’t any better than western europeans, we caused extinction of megafauna wherever we went, recent proof is maoris in nz and madagascars first inhabitants
You do know the Māori people of New Zealand are directly the reason for the 9 species of moa (costal, north island giant, South Island giant, upland, crested, heavy footed, little bush, etc.) as well as the thicc Haast’s eagle, right? I know the rest of the New Zealand extinctions (Laughing owl, N.I. Takahe, etc.) were from Europeans, who also affected the Māori people. Idk. Might just be me.

definitely agree I saw someone defending extinction, because it’s natural in other words, he saying it’s completely natural for us to destroy animals💀💀
Great video but it would have been useful to state the former range of each species/subspecies where this isn't evident in the species' name. Just a suggestion here, but bear in mind that when referring to a decade it isn't standard to use apostrophes (e.g., 1600s instead of 1600's). A very absorbing video - I actually took about two hours to watch it through because I wanted to conduct further online research since I'd never heard of many of these fascinating species - and to reflect on the enormous loss to biodiversity.
Beautiful island creatures many of them. Deforestation and colonisation wiped alot out. When the Essex ship landed on one of the galapagos one of men Thomas started a fire. It destroyed a whole island. They took hundreds of endemic animals particularly tortoises. Sad. Mankind is truly evil especially settlers as they destroyed so much!
One real shame is that so many of these died off completely before the invention of the camera. So the only record we have for most of these are drawings.
Incredibly sad thinking each animal was the last one alive at one time. Imagine seeing the last elephant or the last dog knowing there's never going to be another one...ever.
Personally I don’t think all humans are intentionally and directly responsible to those extinctions but instead it was just collateral damage to urbanization expansion and look I don’t know about you but those animals would eventually cease to exist even if they survived til judgement day they won’t survive the blows that would take every living creature’s life from them and after that God would start judging people for their actions and life’s decisions and everything about what they have done in their lives and some people would go to heaven and some would go to hell depending on what they have done and as for animals of all kinds birds, insects, fishes and land animals would perish and cease to exist because they had a purpose in their lives and they have done their job and so there is no need for their existence anymore and that is why God said to us humans that we thrive on earth with all kinds of forms thriving in living, human count, knowledge etc..but that doesn’t mean we should kill all animals or hate them or anything like that no we should respect creatures of all kinds and preserve balance in the ecosystems those creatures inhabit and are a part of but we can get the pleasures of eating or killing those creatures for whatever they have to offer from feather, claws, wool etc..or we could just leave them alone like said while minding our business and contemplate on their beauty or whatever that fascinates us in them and with that said nothing is ever lasting or immortal no only God is and so if we wish to we can ask God to preserve and save endangered creatures of extinction or making them last longer than they would and exist longer for humans to come and see those amazing and fascinating creatures that is made solely for us to be sign of God’s existence for those who don’t believe God exist or a higher and all powerful being in this almost like a dream of a realm but the fact that it is real is as fascinating as many as other things in life like animals and other never before seen creatures who knows..maybe all those supposedly extinct animals in this video still exist lives somewhere out there unseen by anyone we’ll never know for sure and in case you haven’t figured a major point I’m telling you it’s that lack of knowledge and learning (or at least trying to) that we don’t know is a big part of what makes us humans and the second major point is, Mimsy remember, don’t blame anyone or anything for something that may and may not be true in short don’t be so judgy over anything instead embrace what makes you sad and see the good side of things and if there is no good side then..that’s a big fat lie and you really should see and focus on the good side
I doubt, specially with the current events, if time machine exists i could back in time just to wipe out a specific group of humans to prevent disasters from happening (like the existence of nuclear weapons, GUNS, the mass extinction of animals, prevents humans to multiplies and giving the warning about the sad future "present")
If there are no raindeer in the arctic, the story of santa is no longer even remotely believable. And I like it shows how in our short time living on earth, how much life we have killed off without any help of natural factors. The videos made me cry because the last of these animals lived like prisoners. When they should have been treated with respect and kindness for surviving alone.
Man I can't even with Thylacinus Cynocephalus. I have a goal to recolor each known photograph of the species. (And make available to people online) They make me so emotional.
The Vaquita and the Northern White Rhino will soon be extinct too. Less than 10 Vaquita are known to exist in the Gulf of California, the only place where Vaquita have ever been found, and there are only 2 Northern White Rhinos left in existence. Both rhinos are females that due to various medical conditions cannot carry babies. The last male of the species, Sudan, died in 2018. There were attempts to breed the Vaquita in captivity, but all attempts failed.
I just hate thinking about what happened to the vaquita. They knew they were endangered, they were trying to save them, but people just WOULDN'T STOP OVERFISHING. You can't even breed the 10 remaining because the poor things will die just from transportation.

thank you and thank you for the beautiful music to honor these beautiful beings that once roamed this earth. I only pray that this list will not get longer the longer humanity lives on this planet.
And the sad fact is the numbers of extinct animals in reality is minimum 5-6x times because the insects and fish and other animals were not included. It is a huge task to track all what lost but you recognized a lot of them. Some animals and plants died out with our activity or climate changes, habitat lose and introduced invasive races. Not all the extinction is directly humans fault but indirectly and in many cases indeed humans were the reason to extinction. I hope in the future we will not lose a lot more species because with that we make hard time to the ecosystem to recover and remake some extinct animals-plants with convergent evolution. Hopefully if the genetics improving we could at least recreate these creatures simply by remake the dna in correct way. Now what we can do beyond conservation is collect every living species dna and save it from total extinction. First of all the habitat lost needs to be reduced and we need to reduce the place humans take from the habitats by changing the way we plan cities and collecting rescurces. I do not want to see in 2086 the planet as a wasteland when I will be 100 years old.
Judging the current events, i doubt this planet could last that long before those a**holes self ploclaimed humans destroy everything by their greed or nuclear winter (you know what i'm talking about).
If it makes it any better, new species of animals are also being discovered every day. Creation and extinction is as synonymous and inevitable as life and death. Of course, if humans weren’t so selfish and destructive, far less now extinct animals would still be around currently, but eventually everything falls to dust as new versions of these animals outcompete them.
FACTS, extinction is not always the fault of humans. some species go extinct because they simply do not have the means of survival in their climate, or it just wasnt meant to be. especially back then, a lot of these species resided on islands, which are very sensitive to any changes in their environment or competition. today though, humans have a much greater impact on species survival, but we must think about whether or not we are the cause of extinction to some species, or are there species like the giant panda that are dying out because of natures intention. its pretty crazy to think about
@@beetlevomiit Indeed, but most of the things are happening here is now turned out to be more of a human activity than the natural selection. Few months ago I watched a similar video about how human building metholds affecting the wildlife and a lot of bugs-insect species dies out because we cut the grass or building glass buildings which attracts and traps insects so most dies out because they see a false image of water sources. Island animals are different branch because they really tried to isolate themselves and adopt to a local small environment. The human land occupation and destroying habitats causes more species extinction than what normally need like tens of thousands or million years. Also beyond the destroying we humans are also capable to make new environments and habitats because some species can adopt to it. Harsh example the floating trash on the ocean, it is harmful on most animals but there are other animals what colonized it and now it functions to them as a habitat. Humanity should be careful when we expand and exploiting because in the end we create our own extinction event aswell.
True it's not all directly because of humans. You have to consider interdependence. Some animals rely heavily on another animal as a food source, so if the prey animal dies off, its predator soon follows. And certain animals unwittingly pollinate or propagate a plant species. So if one insect goes extinct, a web of plants won't be propagated. And when those plants die off, so does any animal that depends on them for food.

@Frauke_M F Bro, Stay strong
Videos like this are very important. One of my biggest fears is every remaining subspecies of my favourite animal, the tiger, dwindling in numbers even more or going extinct completely. Or any popular animal we have today for that matter. I can't imagine having kids who will never get to see something like a tiger.
Tiger population is increasing in India
what I heard was popular animals matter
@@kbckj don't twitter me right now putting words in my mouth 😭 "I like x" doesn't mean "Everything else but x doesn't matter" My point was losing species that aren't widely known is bad enough, yet we might be approaching iconic creatures facing extinction which would be shocking because so many people know and love these animals yet we watch them die out.
Popular animals are important because they can spark a love for all animals. If even that, we lose, what hope do we have for the lesser known creatures? I've never heard of a lot of the specific species in this video, but loving 'cool' animals like tigers and hawks has made me wonder about animals we've lost and if I'd have loved them too before it was too late.

Oceania as a whoke was one of the last (MAJOR) Landmasses settled by ancient peoples so the fauna and flora only had so much time to adapt and evolution takes 100s or 1000s of years. Thats why African wildlife is very resilient to humans. The continent has had the most time with our species and has learned a lot. Though its sad we'll never see a Moa,Tasmanian Emu or Tiger.

Well done!
Thank you very much!
Makes you wonder if current animals just spawn when no one is looking.
