    Are these the nopales you buy at the marketa or is it a different kind of nopal so i clueless

      Yes, these Opuntia are the edible ones… the supermarket ones are cut and older so not good to plant. You can buy the rooted pads at Lowes or Home Depot…. to plant. 💚💚💚👍🏼

    Are they planted kind of close together since they're going to get really really big and crowded?

    • @GreenLadyDV
      @GreenLadyDV  Рік тому +2

      Yes and no… They are amazing plants…. I shape them as they grow by trimming the pads to eat them, therefore they have plenty of room. Also, after a few years they have been restarted, moved and replanted. 💚💚💚 See follow up video… 😀

      these are so tasty and super healthy.....you harvest them when they are young and tender.....about 8 inches.....shave the spines off Julian or cut in small squares.....boil them first for about 20 minutes then you can make into many dishes....my mom wood make a Salad out with them with diced tomato....onion.....cotija or Parmesan cheese and a vingrete salad dressing....delicious.....she would also mix them in with diced pork or beef in a Tomatillo sauce or guajillo Chile pepper sauce.....very good....they kinda taste like green beans native American food that has been eaten forever in Mexican homes.

    I have propagated a pile of prickly pears from CA, and they aren't growing after a year, what should I do?

    • @GreenLadyDV
      @GreenLadyDV  4 роки тому +1

      Cactus/opuntia have a growing season. They go dormant in the winter. They should be producing new pads like mad at this point. I have harvested four times this season. Once opuntia are established and they have successfully rooted, they need plenty of water during the growing season. I water mine once a week. I give them a good drenching. Start by uprooting your cacti to check the root system. If they have healthy roots, they may need more sun, or water. On the other hand, if there is mush or rotting, they are getting too much water. Third option is move them to another location, sometimes that is all it takes. Best of luck! 💚🤗

      maria carrasquillo Hi.... I would wait until you have warm weather in your area. If they have roots you can water a week, or so, after planting. However, if you plant cuttings, don’t water for a month or until you see root action. Best of luck! 💚💚💚

    QUESTION???when u plant them in the ground do u put cactus soil in first or does it not matter????

    • @GreenLadyDV
      @GreenLadyDV  4 роки тому

      The soil type doesn’t really matter as long as it drains well. Our soil here in Southern California is sandy, which cactus and succulents love. If yours is more clay based, I would recommend adding cactus soil to your planting area. 💚🤗

    • @GreenLadyDV
      @GreenLadyDV  4 роки тому

      Yes.... the pads hold the water source for the plant. It can go several weeks without water. Keep an eye on the plumpness of the pad, if it is looking a bit dehydrated, give it some water, especially, if they are planted in full sun, in a hot climate. Best of luck! 💚💚💚🤗

    • @GreenLadyDV
      @GreenLadyDV  2 роки тому

      @@cheguevara4957 Hi…. Not familiar with your temps… if you live in an area that dips to freezing temperatures you will need to overwinter your plant in a sunny room, or use grow lights. Opuntia go dormant in the winter, so very little watering is needed. Best of luck. 💚🍀

    • @GreenLadyDV
      @GreenLadyDV  2 роки тому

      They grow fast in the spring time, new pads can emerge in a week….. if your weather is above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, you can plant them in the ground. If they are calloused you can water throughly and let them dry out between waterings. If it rain a lot, in your area, shield them from constant moisture until they form some roots. 💚💚💚🍀

      Two to three months depending on when you plant them. If you plant them in the summer they grow quick. However, they go dormant in the winter and experience no growth. My opuntia are now three years old and are being trimmed and maintained to stand eight feet tall. 😁💚💚💚
