Pruning jade plants (crassula, money plant)

- Sometimes jades need a trim so that they can be both better looking and healthier. Like most succulents, jades (crassula, aka; money tree) tolerate pruning pretty well. But still, there's no need to make more cuts than what's best for our plant. And it's not good to unnecessarily traumatize the plant, or interfere too much with its natural beauty. In essence, we should only cut the problematic branches that waste our plant's resources. In this video I explain how to go about pruning jades and share some helpful tips.
The pruning principles explained in this video applies to most plants and trees as well.
By the way; if you prune your jade, don't throw away the branches you cut off. Check out my earlier video here • Propagating jade plant... to see how you can propagate more jade plants with those cuttings. It's very easy.
Visit my channel at / agoodlife for more videos on plant care and propagation.
Happy planting, and thanks for watching!

Hi
Peter Fielding, I'm sorry to hear that your jade plant snapped in two, but I am glad you were able to protect the wound and salvage those branches and leaves. Well done 👍 I hope your new plants do well for you!

Thank you Inesa Stanic! Best of luck to you! Btw, don't do the "rub soil on the cut parts" thing, some soils don't work well with that method. Otherwise you can prune as the video suggests. I hope and I am sure your jade will be beautiful too! Good luck!

Many thanks for a nice video! Many people don't know that succulents can grow only in very sunny place, more sun more beautiful compact growth (not leggy). Respect!👍
Thank you for the positive comment Antti Seppänen, and much respect to you as well :) You're right; it is important to provide conditions for our plants that are similar to their native environments. And of course, jades, like other succulents, do best in arid and sunny places with well-draining soils. Take care!
_very big & beautiful plant!_
Thank you Atharva Toskar, It was... (it caught a disease since then and I could only save some of the branches.)

They can certainly live for a long time. I've heard of 80-100 year-old jades that have been passed down generations! It's great that you got to see a mature one 👍

I would have left it the way it was. Looked awesome
Hi HexOmega! I agree, I liked how it looked too, but as I tried to explain in the video, the main goal is not looks. Pruning should be primarily done to remove branches that either waste our plants energy or would become problematic in the near future. Take care!
Excellent video. Thank you!!
Thank you Angelica! Glad you found it useful :)
For a well-established matured jade plant I would trim cuttings from the bottom with stems exposed and wait for them to Callus over and then propagate those cuttings. I think it is much faster and better than trying to propagate leaves.
Absolutely Progressive Discussions! I have a video on jade propagation where I show both methods ( ua-cam.com/video/JyLGW72fPso/v-deo.html ) and I recommend using cuttings and larger stems instead of leaves, as well. Thanks for commenting! :)
@@AGoodLife the problem I have with Leaf propagation even if I have the entire Leaf intact and I allowed to tip the callus over is, that regardless if it roots and Sprouts, me spraying it every few days ends in the same result with the growth stopping after the beginning Sprout and then it dies. Maybe I should not spray it at all?
@@ProgressiveDiscussions Maybe, I never sparayed mine and most of mine survived so far, some for 2 years or more. I gently pour a little bit of water by the roots without getting the leaf/leaves wet. Still, they are healthy and they grow, but they grow SO slow, so unless you want a tiny cute little potted plant, and want it to sty tiny and cute for a long time, I wouldn't recommend propagating leaves... :) Best of luck!
@@AGoodLife So I will just spray the tiny roots from now on.
Very helpful and concise!
Thank you Linda Hehemann! I try :)
Great video, thank you! I am looking for information on whether it's possible to notch a crassula trunk to encourage branching. Our mature jade's trunk is bare of branches on one side, mostly due to light and heat issues in its previous location. It's very lopsided in both appearance and center of gravity! Have you ever notched a mature crassula that resulted in a new branch or budding? Pinching isn't applicable here, there's nothing to pinch!
Thanks, jennifer phillips! I don't know about notching but with jades I know extra light encourages branching. I would recommend that you expose that bare side of the trunk to more light and hopefully that should result in some new branches growing on that side. It may take some time, of course, so give it at least a few months. Good luck!
Good information
Pls to advise fertilizer for greenish plant and also time of pruning....?
Mine is need to prune.....
Thank you Jitendra Baraiya! You can prune indoor jades anytime of the year. And when it comes to fertilization, you can fertilize once every 5-6 months with water soluble fertilizers (any will do but preferably ones that are formulated for cacti and succulents.) You can also add some coffee grounds to the soil, but don't let it get on the leaves. Good luck!
Wow this video explains very well! can you make a video where you also explain the trimming? 🙏😊
Thank you Nik Pri! Thanks for the suggestion too :)
Wow explained so neatly. The animation was just great and very effective. Which software have you used for the animation?

Great info....pl tell me sir.....what is used as paste on the cut of plant.....?? Thanks if replied...
Hi Harvider kaur, what I put on cuts is the plant's own soil mixed with water; just mud. I make it wet and runny so that it can be applied more easily and creates a thin mud cover.
Thanks for sharing 😀💕🙏❤️
Thank you Chan! :) 🙏
hi, what is your soil mix for this bonsai jade? thanks
Hi The Green Earth, I'm not sure about the exact proportions but the soil in this pot is mostly regular potting soil with some compost and sand. Probably about 2/3 potting soil with about 1/3 compost and sand.
Helpful information.

Is there a way to promote branching further back on a branch, without cutting the length off? Or from the main trunk?
Hi Emily Stubbs, I'm afraid not, or I am not aware of a reliable method if there is one. Pruning between nodes is the only way I've heard of to specifically encourage jade plants to branch. There is a chance your jade may form new branches along that length in time, and it may help if your plant gets a bit more light, but it's not a foolproof method.
Wow! How bid and nice your jade plant, how old your jade plant? How you care your plant to become big like that, I kiled how many times my jade plant I can' t let them big I don' t know what I can do for my jade plant to be Cong like your jade plant pls make a vedios how to care jade plant, thank you,God bless you more
Thank you lilia tabios! This plant in this video was around 8 years old. I mostly just leave it alone. I prune and fertilize it maybe once every 3 years, and water it once a week. That's it. Keep trying, I'm sure you will grow a big one sometime too. God bless you too. Take care
Question!!!!
If I cut it at a shorter length than 4 nodes, will it still bush out from there? I want some diverse looking jades and one I want to be extra bushy!! But I want to be wise with it too
Hey BagDiscEnergy, it should be ok, but I wouldn't do that too many branches, and I wouldn't go shorter than 2 nodes. You can experiment and see what happens but if you want to maintain your plant's well-being that's what I would recommend. Take care and good luck!
@@AGoodLife you’re a legend 🙌
Thank you so much for explaining which branches to cut and how to cut them! Your Crassula is so pretty, how old is it?

Thank you so much 😊👍💕
Thank you @aprilblossom9268! I'm glad you liked the video and let me know! Good luck with pruning your plants!
Your “runny mud” technique seems like a very good way to introduce bacteria into an open wound. I’d recommend sprinkling some cinnamon powder onto the fresh wound instead 👊🏼
I haven't had any issues with that method yet SupermanBB, but I'll look into it and see if I can find out more about whether it makes sense or not. Thanks for the heads up.
@@AGoodLife you likely don’t have too many bad things hangin around in your particular soil mix. But often these microbes are present in soil and introducing them to moist open wounds could prove fatal
@@SupermanBB Thank you, good to know.

Have you done a video on fusing a jade. I watched and did one on a very small plant. I have a very personally special jade to me which is just individual pieces growing quite well. I’d like to make it into a one trunk plant. Please advise
Hi Marcos Torres, I can't offer any help unfortunately since I don't know how one would go about doing something like that. I should look into it, but I'm not sure if that's possible. Good luck with yours. If you find a method that works somehow, please share, I'd love to learn about it too!
Omg what a lovely jade.. hope my one will be the same as this.
Thanks Mhey9! Just give it time, hopefully yours will be even nicer!
Respected sir, plz tell what you apply on the places/tips from where you cut/trim the branches???
Hi razia atif, what I put on cuts is soil and water, just mud. I make it very wet and runny so that it can be applied more easily and creates a thin mud cover.
If I cut a huge jade back to ground will it start regrowing?
Hi
james depugh, i've never tried that or have seen it done, and I don't think it would work. That kind of pruning is done to some trees and plants that are prolific quick growers. Jades grow especially slowly and everything I've seen says not to prune back more than about a quarter of jades.
Sir,how can i save my jade plant from dying?
I purchased Crassula almost 20 days ago. And from past few days, it's leaves started turning black...almost all the leaves have turned black.
Today i pruned it also
please tell me anything else i need to do
Hi Anchal, sorry to hear about your jade. Leaves turning black mostly means it's being overwatered. Stop watering it and check the bottom of the pot. It should have holes for drainage. Even with holes, if it has been over-watered for too long, the roots might have started rotting. If there is too much root rot, I'm afraid it may not be possible to save the plant. But if there is only some root rot (rotting roots would be slimy and softer) remove the rotten roots. If there is no root rot, hopefully just stopping watering and letting the soil dry and watering much less from now on should help your jade recover in time. Best of luck!
@@AGoodLife thanku
I also thinks that it's because of over-watering.
Will check it and inform you
And 1 more qsn should i keep it in sunlight for some hours? I always keep it indoors only
@@anchal.ak22 You are welcome!
If it's not too dark where it is, it should be fine inside. As long as there is some light it doesn't necessarily need direct sunlight. Best of luck!
Great video ! Thank you . What is the size of that planter? It’s not that tall but wide? What is your suggestion? I think I replanted mine in a way to high planters. Thank you 🙏
Thank you J CHany! This planter is about 40cm wide 14cm deep (or 16" x 5.5"). Jades don't mind being slightly root-bound but it doesn't matter too much, your planters should be ok, don't worry :)
@@AGoodLife Thank you very much ! Appreciate your answer. I think I will leave them as it is 😊. They are pretty happy
@@jchany137 My pleasure! Good luck :)
i need to transplant my jades so thanks for the question 🙏 I know my mom says they like a small pot and not to measure it like other plants..shes the green thumb haha :)

Amazing Jade! I've killed a few but my current one was the only plant I kept before moving from NY to CA. It's still quite small but has had some life once arriving in CA. It doesn't have a thick main trunk but two bunches with 3 thin stems each. One stem of each is falling over about to hit the side of the pot. There only about 5-6 inches tall. Should I propagate those? My only concern is that the plant isn't that full. Also, how do the trunks get that thick?
Hi ncboy64, sounds like pruning those branches may be a bit too much, since they would be 1 out of 3 branches on each stem. If they are not pointing straight down may be you can trim not the whole branch but the tip of the branch. That may reduce the weight at the tip and help them lean down a bit less too. I think that would be totally fine but it's hard to say for sure without seeing it. Trunks get thicker over time, not much you can do about that besides making sure your plant gets the right amount of light and water. But you can prune your plant to be fuller instead of taller over time and that will help the trunk be thicker in proportion to the height of your plant. Good luck!
@@AGoodLife I think I may trim off some so it's not leaning so much. Due to the weight those 3 branches are parallel with the floor. Not strong enough I believe they'll be able to maintain the weight. Thank you for you help!
No problem @@ncboy64, good luck!
So how did the jade look after pruning?
Hi Georgina Humphrey, you can see the 'before' at the beginning of the video and what you see at the end of the video (after the 2:40 mark) is how it looked after pruning.
Linda! Qual substrato você usa? Obrigada.
Thank you Lucia Helena! I am not 100% sure but I think mine is a Crassula Ovata.

My jade plant I bought from roadside nursery is not growing well.what to do? Sometimes overwatering and sometimes looks like it is drying How to know when water shud be given and what to do for good groth
Hi Veena, jades like a good amount of sun, so if it's not getting much sun, you can place it in a brighter place. When it comes to watering, once a week should be fine; jades are quite drought-tolerant. I hope your jade will start doing better soon.
OMG am so envious, my jade plant keeps dying on me. 😭 I don't understand why they are so hard to maintain
Thank you @inkfish123456, but don't worry, you're not alone! I've killed plenty of jades too unfortunately 😬Take care!

Dariush Rnzdh, yes, jades can make good looking bonsais by proper trimming and training. Good luck!
