  • Angling is not a gentle sport when it bumps into animal rights extremists . In Nottinghamshire, fishers are showing they can also be tough when their sport is threatened. The threat? Their new landlord, the local wildlife trust. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust purchased the Attenborough Nature Reserve near Nottingham in December 2020. Now groups, including the Angling Trust and Countryside Alliance, are fighting to save the right to fish there.

Laws only apply to those who follow them...nothing is illegal if you don't get caught, ask any politician...

This is not just a problem with wildlife trusts. Sixty odd years ago Titchwell north Norfolk was a beautiful natural area, kept that way by restricted access then along came the RSPB and completely destroyed it flooded the tidal marshes erected buildings and carparks, followed by hundreds of anoraks. Retrograde progress

I often feel that coming up with touchy-feeling wellbeing guff, to try to justify our fantastic pastime, is just playing their game. We shouldn't bother.
I don't need to invent 10 reasons why I should be allowed to fish, and I don't need to pretend it's curing me of some mental problems that I don't even have.
I fish because I simply enjoy doing it, and I harm no-one. End of.

I said fishing and shooting will be next, when we allowed the fox hunting etc to be banned. No one believed me then! I feel like Trump.

This all started back in the '80s when the real battle for fieldsports began. We were alerted to the fact that we all needed to stick together
I regret to say this did not happen, more and more of these so called wildlife trusts are springing up
    What can be done?

This has been going on in north Lincolnshire and east Yorkshire for decades and anglers have largely had to bend over and take it. The vast majority of the lower yorkshire derwent, Barton clay pits and a lot of the gravel pits around lincoln are now out of bounds to angling. Our only recourse has been to ask Birdwatchers to show their permits when they go on lakes that are still owned by angling organisations and then politely (well sometimes) ask them to leave when they can't and also tell them the reason why.

This process all started when hare coursing and then fox hunting were banned.

I’m sorry but when the hunting debate was going on I ask fisherman to support us and what did I get. I got it’s nothing to do with us and they will never come after us we’re to big. They are after everyone who hunt’s shoots & yes you fishermen & woman.

To use a horrible Americanism I would have thought Angling Associations like these two would have been 'Grandfathered In'

It's a double edged sword, fighting for your rights to fish at the locations these associations own will allow them to earn even more money to buy more land and place even more widespread restrictions.

well said instead of sitting back and taking it on the chin from woke folk, we need to fight back and promote how we look after lakes and nature

Just imagine if flies, bees, wasps and other bugs could too. The car journey every person who claims to be against harming wildlife goes on would be horrific for them. They don't want to care that far though because it doesn't suit them.

@@mharris7380 desperate. You carry on thinking it's not barbaric to drag a fish out of the water by its face for fun.

You're making up things there to try and intimidate me and add weight to your argument. I haven't said it isn't cruel, what I've pointed out is that everybody kills other species throughout their lives while doing things they don't need to do. If anyone supports not killing or harming other species they should put their own house in order first. Don't have anything where other species were killed or harmed to make it, don't go on any unnecessary journey such as a holiday, Pretty much everything you have has been made despite the deaths, stress and injury it causes to animals.

      @@mharris7380 what a stupid argument.
Drawing comparisons between doing essential things that may cause the harm of some flies or ants or a hobby where the object is to pierce an animals mouth with a hook then drag it from its environment to then be effectively suffocated whilst people admire it.
You must live in a very odd world if you think the two are comparable.

@@yetidodger6650 why don't you go and protest about the millions of people being killed in Syria and the Yemen! Instead of targeting fishermen. If more youth fished you would not have as much violence in society. Fishing is good for you.
