With a little time in the shop I did this Cherry vessel with an Ipe inlay segmented ring. I think this will end up back on the lathe in 2 weeks for some changes.
Well so far the ring and the top of the piece is in perfect shape and condition. The side walls that I kept thicker has established a crack as I feared as well. but that is due to thickness and not the ring.Take care
Great job Al as always. Contrasting ring is just enough (for me) to add that extra bit of interest. Definitely an "Ipe aye yea" bowl . Thanks for sharing my friend. All the best.......... Geof (UK )
Classy Bowl. Another ring ( inlay ) might look good also!!! What state do you live in? You seem to travel often. I learn a lot from watching you and it makes my day better, Thanks!!!
TY for sharing your videos and your talent with us. I enjoy how you always go outside the box and create such fantastic pieces. It would be so nice if you could display the finished piece near the end of the video, perhaps on a turntable, showing it from all around and inside... I just get such joy from watching you work, how much you understand the wood, it would be wonderful to see the finished work more. Much admiration from a fan up in Alberta.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Generally I post enough pics of the finish product at the end depending where I am editing the video from.. Different people have different methods of the display. I am not trying to hide anything in my methods. I will keep it in mind but my goal is the turning and the hopes that people get some inspiration. Thank you and hope to hear from you on the next adventure.
Great looking bowl Al. I like that top just as it is without adding another ring. I would like to ask you a question. How about telling us what RPM's you are turning at and when you change speed. That will help some of us newbies a lot. God Bless my friend.
Hey Al, great work. I like combination of rings and natural wood myself; did a few of them last few weeks. I'm wondering if they will separate with time (I did not inlay them) being that the grain is contrary sometimes.
Well thank you to answer your question It has had no separation on the rings and it kept the top very true The side being thicker established a crack along the grain. It will be back on the lathe soon
Thank you Lee Yeah when I matched the ring and saw most of it was going to disappear I was disappointed but rolling over the edge I was able to show it off just enough.
Beautiful work as always. I heard you say you come to Georgia, do you still do that? I'M 40 miles north of Atlanta and would enjoy meeting and talking to you about turning if possible.

Al. What is epate? I love this.
I think you are referring to Ipe. It's an extremely dense wood I believe from South America, Used primarily for decking. Very hard and bug resistant.
Looks like a photo negative of an old-fashioned white-wall tire... I LIKE IT!
That is what inspires us to do or go outside the box............Imagination LOL
