Read his book
If my late brother had done an article in the Long Beach Press Telegram, I would have known about it. I also NEVER heard him brag about "running Lueders Park." I think Mr. Baker has Joey (aka Bartender) confused with someone else, and I'd like a citation/date of publication so I can find out who the person is that allegedly made those remarks. Also, If he had been beaten by police, I would have known. He would have told my family. I spoke to my mom almost daily and she kept me in the loop about my brothers. -- Joey was young when he did the Time magazine article and did not realize that a lot of what he said, would be received differently than what he intended. He especially had regrets about remarks he made about our parents, but young people often make remarks about parents getting on their case, while living under their roof. -- The incident where my brother was allegedly slapped (where Mr. Baker says "believe it or not" and I don't believe it at all) - I suspect is also about someone else, not MY brother. --
Finally, my brother died at Martin Luther King Hospital (where someone stole the shoes off his feet). Our family had NO connection to that hospital and my mother was not at King, when my brother arrived there. My mom worked in the business office of a hospital near her home.
People get circumstances mixed up and stories get circulated that are accepted as "fact." If something is true, that is fine. But if it can't be documented, it's better not to put it out there about folks who are not here.
Finally, it's never stated but my brother was hardly ever in Compton, when he died (which was December, 1976). He was dating someone in L.A and spent a lot of time there with her. He was in an apprenticeship program to be a butcher or meat cutter, settling down, maturing and making future plans. Sadly, he decided to go to that dance that long ago night and lost his life. -- How I wish life was like a movie and I could go back in time and persuade him to stay home. I discussed the gang culture with my brothers and how they came to be involved in it. I am not defending it, but when they explained to me how it all got started, I did gain an understanding of the mindset/culture of the time.
Note: Dootsie Williams owned Dooto's, where my brother was shot. He also owned a record label that helped establish a lot of young talent coming out of the Hub City and surrounding areas.
How much younger are you than Bartender? You might have been to young for grown folks business at that time.

@@streetgangs Like the statement re the Press Telegram article which was probably someone other than who he attributed it to, the alleged "beating" and the alleged "slap," the wrong hospital being mentioned, an allegation that a family member was present when my brother arrived and a few other inaccuracies. He may not intend malice and may even think his memory is accurate. However, a lot of people of the dominant culture get black folks mixed up. I suspect that is the case with a few of his recollections. Further, some rumors circulate so long that they get misconstrued as "fact."

Well, first of all when visiting another family's home back in the day, it was very rare for a visitor to be the one to open the front door, when someone knocked. Yes, it could happen that someone asked my brother to do so, but that sounds strange to me. Secondly, before the madness of guns/mayhem, guys and some girls settled disputes via the old school "fist fight." My brothers came of age during the fist fight era. It was a time where if an individual physically assaulted you, you basically had NO choice but to defend yourself. If you did not, you made yourself a target for others to pick on. For that reason and knowing my brother was good with his hands, I can't imagine anyone walking up to a door, slapping him, and casually walking away.to brag about it. I am not going to say the incident did not happen. Someone may have been slapped in a home on Tajauta way back in the day. However, I can confidently state that the individual slapped was not my brother. -- The officer does say that the story was told to him. That particular recollection reminded me of that old song "Rumors' by Timex Social Club. It's been decades but these rumors, not necessarily based on any facts, keep circulating. On another note, there was a part of the interview where it was alleged that a guy resembled Isaac Hayes..followed by, "he was ugly." Well, the late, and very popular, Isaac Hayes was one of the music heroes of the black community I don't know anyone, black, white or otherwise who viewed the man as "ugly." Maybe some of the objectionable/insulting parts of these interviews along with names of living people could be edited out? It may not have been the interviewer's intent to be insulting, which is all the more reason to edit prior to posting.
