La Callas has defined many roles and by no means is Medea any exception. Fierce and powerful, yet firm. She was always extremely impressive when performing roles like Medea for she held the truth of singing.
Despite the changing landscape of her vast vocal talents over time , she always knew what she had and how to use those resources to greatest dramatic effect.
They are ALL AMAZING, and really capture the evil fury of Medea. BUT, if I had to pick ONE, it would have to be the LA Scala performance in 1953. But mainly just because of how she emphasizes that massive chest voice at the end of the first phrase: "Al sacro fiume io VO!" What a jolting and horrific sound! In a good way, though, because it adds so much to the drama and suits what is taking place! (I was surprised to hear that in about half the performances she didn't even use her chest voice for that, which I felt took away from the drama.) BRAVA LA DIVINA!!
Agree! I can partially understand not using chest in the studio recording since she's next to a mic, but the 1959 Covent Garden in that collapsed head voice is no good! When she does it in chest it's the most visceral and as you say horrific sound
The one and only. Brava diva. Tears come when you hear the last on the list, from 1961, where you can slightly detect the signs of a weakened, wobbly voice.
