  • RICOH GR III HDF and RICOH GR IIIx HDF:
High-end digital compact cameras featuring a new, built-in HDF (Highlight Diffusion Filter) to create mellow, diffused expressions in highlighted areas
TOKYO, March 28, 2024 - RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. is pleased to announce the launch of the RICOH GR III HDF and RICOH GR IIIx HDF digital compact cameras. Designed using the acclaimed RICOH GR III and RICOH GR IIIx as base models, these high-end models feature a newly developed HDF (Highlight Diffusion Filter).
While inheriting the fundamental merits of the base models - exceptional image quality, flawless point-and-shoot operation and outstanding portability - the new models allow the user instantly and with a single action to engage the newly developed, built-in HDF (Highlight Diffusion Filter), which is designed to deliver mellow, softened images with diffused highlight areas, in addition to the clear, sharply focused images made famous by the base models. This filter allows the user to add a totally different kind of visual expression to captured images, depending on the subject or creative intention.
Main features of the new RICOH GR III HDF and RICOH GR IIIx HDF
・ Single-action switching to the new, built-in HDF to create mellow, softened images
The new models incorporate the newly developed HDF (Highlight Diffusion Filter) to emphasize highlights and produce mellow, softened images. Developed by taking advantage of RICOH’s advanced inkjet technology cultivated over the years, this special-effect filter is designed to diffuse highlight areas and create a blurred effect along the image’s edges, making it possible to capture somewhat nostalgic images resembling those captured in film photography or movies. Since the HDF can be instantly switched on and off with a single action, it lets the user effortlessly alternate between two completely different visual expressions - clear, sharply focused images symbolic of the RICOH GR series, and mellow, softened images captured by the HDF - depending on the subject or creative intention. This creative versatility expands the visual boundaries of snapshot photography.
・ The color of the shutter-release button has been changed to grayish silver to symbolize the easy shift of visual expression. The default setting of the Fn (Function) button has also been changed to the ON/OFF switching of the HDF.*
・ The user can preprogram up to three white-balance settings as the base white balance.** It is also possible to couple the base white balance with the White-balance Fine Adjustment function.
・ The new models feature Zone Select AF,*** which automatically sets the focus at the most appropriate point within the image area, after the user shifts the 3X3 focus area to the desired zone.
    * The user can also select another function as the default setting of the Fn button.
** This function can be added to all RICOH GR III- and GR IIIx-series models using function expansion firmware, which is scheduled to be released along with the market launch of these new models.
*** The 3X3 focus area is identical in size to that of the Auto-area AF (Center) mode.
Note: Except for the availability of the ND (Neutral Density) filter, all other specifications of the new models are identical with those of the RICOH GR III/IIIx.

I'd rather they offered a hotshoe small flash unit with its own powersource, because off-cam is always more powerful than pop up, it wouldn't drain the camera battery, it wouldn't add size to the body, it could be wireless triggered for better angles than direct, you could use it with the current GR and wouldn't require buying a whole new body, you could use it with other cameras, it could have manual dials to see/change settings at a glance without menu diving, it could have third-party clip on gels and diffusers. There's so many reasons that a small hotshoe flash is infinitely better!

Why not inventing a thread or magnet Ring to stick on to the lens (like the JJC UV filter) with different filter options if you want to keep your camera pocketable.

But then they just stretched the video because of one HDF filter, well, a new shutter button and a couple of new camera functions that will appear on the base models. On the other hand, the update, although quite minor, is good for me. But maybe it makes sense to wait until the fourth version, who knows.

I think it’s a great idea to provide a hardware solution for the digital problem of sharp highlights blow out. However, what GR really needs, in my opinion, is (in that order): bigger battery (don’t care if the body gets slightly bigger), better dust resistance, and also perhaps improvement in the durability of the ribbon electrical cable that moves with the retractable lens (I had mine failing on the original GR, and the repairing technician told me it was fairly common; I don’t know if that was fixed in later models). Also, a return of the built in flash would be welcome.

      @gpagnoni 3 місяці тому +1

2-3 mm added to the grip makes absolutely no difference in terms of portability. In the other hand, a battery that lasts only 200 shoots is not quite acceptable today. That means that if you go out for a day of shooting you probably have to carry at least three batteries (and make sure you recharge them at night). Sometimes that may be difficult when traveling, which is one of the target use of this camera.

Great looking compact cameras and features! It would be amazing if you actually choose the intensity of the diffusion say between 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 diffusion, that would be game changing. Because in the sample shots the diffusion looks very strong and for some situations you might only want a subtle glow rather than a huge bloom of the highlights.

A pop up flash is literally the worst version of this ask. Don't be afraid to dream a little bigger darling. 😂

Assuming this isn't an overly early april fools thing as some have speculated, I'm not interested in this specific thing, but putting more kinds of filters in a camera body is neat.
Personally, I would love to see a toggleable IR filter in a camera. However, I know that wouldn't be practical on the GRIII as it has an infrared emitting LED in the body for some reason which makes IR a nonstarter above ISO 100. (I have an IR-converted GRIII; I'm probably not the only person who does, but I'm guessing there aren't many of us.)

Wasn’t easier to just add a preset in the importing app? Any mobile phone can have the same “dreamy feeling”, any children app can add any effect. The ND filter is much more useful, photography wise.

@@js9204 I understand if it was like f1.4 it would no longer be pocket sized but they did f1.8 on their smaller older ricoh digital I - IV cameras. Plus the flash use to be on the ricoh gr i and ii but does the sensor stabilize take up that much space? It should be possible but I'm not 100% sure.

Can the HDF feature be turned off? Or is it fixed/on always? If it can be turned off, would the pictures taken with GRIIIxHDF with HDF feature turned off be identical to those taken with GRIIIx? I want to understand if the HDF feature causes the camera (GRIIIxHDF) to produce lower quality images even when the feature is turned off, compared to the camera variant that does not have the HDF feature in first place (i.e., GRIIIx).

Nice to see that ricoh is still on the market. After 5 years though some big changes could come like water resistance, dust cleaning, viewfinder, quicker autofocus. If not all of them then some. The logic that griii is a good camera so no need for a new one doenst make any sence to me. The gr1 was and is also good but new one came on the market.
Also could anyone tell respnsibly if in the near future a film one will come ? I know ricoh has its own rhythmus and plans but it would be also nice to know if a nice camera will come in the next 6 months so one can save or plan acordingly
