NEW Apple M1 Mac mini: Unboxing, Setup & First Impressions

- It's no secret by now that I've been extremely excited to get my hands on an Apple Silicon Mac. Ever since the initial announcement, I knew I wanted to jump on board with one of the very first Apple Silicon machines, simply to experience the transition. It just so happens that we were blessed with a new Mac mini, so naturally being a desktop nerd at heart, I picked it up in November 2020 and have been using it as my main machine ever since.
This video covers all the ramble you'd expect, while unboxing, setting up and showcasing the product. We'll dive more into the nitty gritty in the future, but so far, I am extremely impressed. Stay tuned a 'Part 2' to this video.

It's quite rare to have someone genuinely excited these days about buying in a new bit of tech. The bigger UA-camrs out there are all jaded! Having to save, and then splash out your own cash for gear (and not return it) really does make the whole experience so much more worthwhile, and as we see on the video, genuine! Here's hoping the excitement lasts for a long time!

Hey Tom, I believe that weird purple window issue is a new feature in Big Sur. If you go to System Preferences --> General --> Untick "Allow Wallpaper Tinting in Windows", that will probably fix it.
Anyway, been a big fan of yours for years now. This was a fantastic video! New setup is looking great!

Woohoo! Unboxing new Macs is a great feeling. One of my friends just upgraded to an M1 MBP and sold me his late 2014 27" iMac. Still the most powerful computer I've ever owned even at over 6 years old

They're awesome, I'm so happy for you man. I will say it's made for that 80% use case, it will struggle when it comes to...let's say 'specific' workloads. It's pretty amazing that they made it this good first try.

Great vid glad to see some new Mac stuff! Chuffed for you. Like you my first Mac was 2007 but I’m holding off this whole port not running at full speed issue and only 1 external display on the laptops is a big downside so happy to wait 3-4 months for the actual pro stuff 👍

awesome to hear you've been around and enjoying this madness for so long.
We have one of these at work for live streaming. There is an unbelievable amount of equipment attached to that thing including audio interfaces, cameras, etc and it runs with no problem. It does get kind of warm, but no where near hot. Runs amazingly smooth. I was extremely acceptable about apple silicon at first but now after using that machine especially considering what it goes through 24 hours a day, I am extremely impressed.
Tom as your #1 fan across the pond i am so glad you got a new Mac!! I so much enjoy watching your videos learning from them and being thoroughly entertained by them!! I just finished watching your Christmas video on your other channel and it was truly the best Christmas video i have ever seen!!! Your precious boys and lovely wife were the stars!! As for the new M1 Macs - i am still on my 2012 Macbook pro BUT i had to join in the excitement so i bought my daughter a new M1 Macbook Pro 13 inch to replacer her 2010 (Core 2 duo!!) Macbook Pro. She loves it!! Now i will hush, sit back and enjoy this one as the cold rain beats down on my roof also.

Tom I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed this “film” you created haha I consumed it all in one sitting and constantly found myself smiling throughout it because of us having the same feeling for the M1 Mac Mini. I ordered mine 2 days ago and should be in my hands in 7 more days. It will be my first desktop computer and I’m super excited it’s the first gen of Apple Silicon! :D
Oh, it is nice to watch a good ramble, and these M1 macs are just bonkers, I upgraded from a mid 2012 MacBook Pro to a m1 air with 16GB ram and the 8 core gpu, and it just flies, and the battery feels bottomless
Great video as always! I imagine most of the issues will be resolved in subsequent releases of Big Sur, as I've had a couple of issues with Big Sur which slowly are being resolved. Looking to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro this year when they're (hopefully) released so seeing how well this performs was great!
I ordered mine just yesterday.. I am really excited for my first ever Mac.. Always been a PC guy, but I thought it was time to take the plunge and see what all the fuss is about. I have an iPhone, an iPad Pro 11 inch, and an Apple Watch Series 5.. So next up is the M1 Mac Mini.. Now have to wait two weeks.. argghh..! Great video, keep the content coming.. 2 BIG thumbs up..!

Great video TOm. Takes me back to when I unboxed my first new Mac, a 2007 1.83GHZ Mac mini. I really want another one of those. You got more in the box back then; apple remote, display adapters and of course physical install media. I'm waiting for the next generation of the mini or the new 16 inch MacBook Pro before I jump in, as much as I wanted to try the first ten products for myself.

I love your videos, your point of view. I own a second hand 2011 Mac mini and I hope one day to have an experience like yours, maybe with a M1 for the same reason you told. You deserve that piece of Apple history. Ciao!

you might want to consider h265 now. It represents a dramatic space savings. If I had to keep my home DVD/Bluray rips in h264, I would need like another 25TB in my NAS array. Also consider wall mounting the monitors and speakers, heck, you could wall mount the Mac mini and the dock tooo and have a completely open desk.
The keyboard reminds me of those HP keyboards that have been everywhere for the last 15 years.

I thought those displays looked familiar! I have the same ones! I'm using a single Dell stand to hold both of them, you should upgrade! And nice video!
I'm happy with my Logitech MX Keys
I just bought a m1 mac mini. from apple's website + the pro apps student bundle. 16gb of ram 256gb ssd. I'm using it for music production with midi. Since core audio is way better than windows audio for latency. I use a quad monitor mount with 4 27inch screens. My top monitor is used for the mac mini. I run the audio output from the mac mini into my pc. then use windows to reloop the audio channel to any output. I run barrier for the mouse and keyboard setup over the lan via ethernet.
I've had 0 issues. It's silent it makes beats!!!
I also have the M1 Mac Mini. Same config, 16GB/256GB, had it since the 2nd week of december.
I'm running 2 1440p monitors , both connected to the Mac itself. For extra ports, I use a satechi
dock that the Mac itself sits onto. Bought it for my 2018 Mac Mini that I sold recently, and it
works great for the M1 too. Adds a ton of USB and an SD card reader. Might want that
to replace the TB2 dock, assuming your MBP will be retired for editing duties.
I'll be retiring the dock to eliminate any issues there, for sure.
Keyboard Idea also would be good content, maybe one of really good kit mechanical keyboards.
Stumbled across your videos while keeping myself entertained by looking at teardowns and fixing things. Your enthusiasm is infectious so I've subscribed. BTW I tried to use my OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock with my new Mac mini and it just wasn't working out for some reason - yes, it felt like a hub too - I just bought their Thunderbolt 3 Dock and so far, three days, it's been a dream: given me back the extra ports I need and everything just feels integrated again. But I've also experienced some display, USB-C, glitches on the new machine... nothing bad enough to want to send it back and I expect it's firmware issues that'll get sorted soon.
BTW I also have a Mid-2011 Mac mini that I maxed out with 16Gb RAM and a 256Gb SSD and then OWC Data Doubled the stock 500Gb HDD. While doing that I inadvertently tore off the infrared/power light connector, so I understand the annoyance in your Time Capsule disk upgrade video. At some point, I may learn to solder just to fix that connector!
I (very sadly) sold my workhorse 2011 15" Macbook Pro (which had most of its internals replaced or renewed and had the gorgeous matte display) and my 2016 13" Touchbar Macbook Pro (not my fave) to fund the M1 Mac mini, base spec. So I'm now mostly Mac mini with a 2013 Chromebook Pixel for portability if needed (looks like a Macbook!). Mind you there is a 15" G4 iMac sitting under the desk in the original box which needs an airing too. Just couldn't get rid of it - it's such a beautiful design and it means I still have all three architectures. Looking forward to this transition too and catching your next videos.

I have a fantastic 'ripping a connector off' repair blunder coming up in a video soon, so definitely stay tuned for that haha! I can see how breaking the IR connector can be done on the mini, it's a fiddly little so and so. I expect many people have done the same.

Apple M1 Macs are really good in terms of performance. M1 Mac Mini was designed for 4K video editing in mind so 1080p is nothing for it hehe
Just too bad Apple seems to have stopped aiming Macs at regular users. I used the Mac from childhood as my machine for everything, but Apple's insanity in the hardware department long ago compelled me to move to Linux on standard PC hardware instead.

What's your thoughts on right to repair and Apple making it difficult to replace parts even if they're parts from another device?
Im a 46 year old tired f--k and Love the days my new Macs arrive. 17 Macs later and go figure I use 7 of them daily Just scored a brand new M1 Max Macbook in lmiddle 2024. So I get it

The 2013 MacBook Pro is the best Mac I've ever bought, and it's still going strong.... but the M1 is such an upgrade. Leaps and bounds quicker. Not perfect, but a lovely piece of kit.
I have a similar issue with my displays on Windows where one monitor is delayed from the other so if I move a window up and down between the two then one is delayed.
However there is a reason, they are two different monitors. One is 144Hz TN panel and the other is 60Hz IPS. Your monitors seem to be the same and I'm not that familiar with OSX but I would check to make sure that both screens are running at the same refresh rate. Otherwise like you said this could be the hub introducing a delay on one.

Tom I upgrade from a Mac mini 2009 to the new Mac mini M1 and love it my poor old Mac mini was still running well so my wife is using it now. I found a type-C dock
on Amazon it comes with a hard drive enclosure SATA and SD/TF card reader plus three USB 3.0 and 1 type 2.0 USB the Mac mini sits on top of the dock (HAGIBIS brand dock)
I picked it up for $50.00AU. I use the bay for time machine backup all ports are in the front and the SATA bay is on the underside off the dock I am just using a 1TB 2 inch drive but later will put a SSD in the bay just love the system.
I think I've seen the dock you mention! Absolutely awesome, you must've seen such a humungous boost going from an '09.
I’m waiting to see what they do with the iMac or if they make a new Mac Pro Mini. Think I’ll buy a new mini PC first. Will be interesting to see what you make of the new Apple CPU computer.

I'm having the M1 MacBook Pro for about 2 months now and I'm still absolutely in love with it. I've been thinking about getting a Mac Mini as well, but I'll wait for a later generation with 10GbE and more I/O in general.
Good call. While the mini is glorious, I/O is definitely a massive drawback.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour I just finished the video and toward the end you've said that you also have those colour issues when switching between desktops on a single monitor. I don't have these issues at all, surprisingly. Do you have the wallpaper tinting option enabled in the general settings? Maybe that might be the culprit.
You also mentioned that you have some apps locking up on you or hanging. Are those any specific apps? Because that's another thing that doesn't happen for me.
i would get one but it only supports 2 Displays and i have 3 so i wait for the iMac with M1X chip

Sweet - I got that same keyboard but don't currently use it. I like the typing flow on it very well, however the "clancking" of the keys has a little bit of echo to it.
Yes there is definitely an echo, and my desk echoes too so it's extremely loud...
but so far I'm loving it.

Really interested in this video, which couldn't have come at a better time. I also bought one with the same spec to replace my 2012 mac mini. I don't run dual screens and use a USB3 dock instead of a TB. Whilst my new mac is really quick, I also experience wierd little issues - what you said 01:06:16 is spot on.
I still have my 2012 mac mini which just seems completely solid in comparison and can't help but feel these issues have just taken a little of the gloss away.
I still remember with dread the Macbook Pro nvidia problem but half expect these issues being early adopters and they will all be sorted down the line after a few sytem updates.

well, I'm about halfway though now and just wow... I'm at the part where you edit 1080p footage, and you saying that your Mac mini doesn't even ramp up the fan is just crazy to me. the fastest Mac I own is a 15" Late 2011 MacBook Pro and it sits there fans blasting doing something as simple as a time machine backup...

This project isn't, but I do have a Power Mac project in the pipeline for this year.

Great video, Tom. When using a windows keyboard on a Mac.....how do you use the option and command keys?
Usually they are remapped to the alt & windows keys.
