    If you're in the market for a rebuilt title Tesla or you want to rebuild a salvage Tesla from the auction there's a lot you need to know. Tesla has changed many of its policies recently and it may surprise you on how limited these cars can be. I still love my 2015 P85D that we rebuilt after it was totaled by the insurance company but it's not like owning a normal Tesla. Rich Rebuilds helps out with this one as he knows a thing or two about wrecked Teslas so enjoy and I hope this helps you out.

    Do you think Tesla is doing it right by removing supercharging from all Salvage Teslas?

    • @rubyred93chev
      @rubyred93chev 4 роки тому +153

      _No, someone paid good money to support the brand, and buy a Tesla. Even if the car has been a salvage rebuilt properly, it shouldn't be blacklisted. That said, once the car has been brought back to life the right way(and depending on a person's state laws), a non-branded title may be issued to defray the car from the bowels of Elon Musk and the 'supercharger' (no pun intended)._

      I think its totally wrong for Tesla to do that. if you get in an accident, would the tesla always be totaled out. because wouldn't the car be considered rebuilt if repaired by a body shop with an insurance claim? and then won't the supercharger not work?

    • @gregh7457
      @gregh7457 4 роки тому +37

      Yes, i think its their right to ban salvaged cars because i've seen some hacked DIY rebuilds over the years. They've already got PR nightmares with battery fires and autopilot crashes. They don't need any more bad press with salvage cars BUT i also think the company could offer owner paid inspections to get access to the super charger station. Besides, its only a matter of time before someone hacks the tesla software and tricks the supercharger stations or people have already cloned vins and are tricking the superchargers. hush... its a secret... If anyone knows if it can be done ,Damien Maguire would know

    there should be a setup on a full inspection for the tesla that to show it has been fixed right or been purchased used from a independent person stating it is a good condition maintained type. so the features are not taken away if there is something wrong with the battery like needing to be replaced soon I would understand the quick charge not there till it is fixed. things like that if it has been fixed all the way around and at a hundred % mechanically sound it should have that feature instated when inspected by them to make sure if there is a problem there would not be a backlash on tesla. lets say something wrong with the wires that lead to the batteries to charge it are exposed don't pass it till it is fixed and stated fixed by them things like that.

    I'm sympathetic is a way and not in another, Supercharging and Free Supercharging was part of the deal for the new buyer that paid $80k - $100k for those Model S vehicles in the video. I'm not sure you can buy a salvage vehicle for $25k and expect Tesla to subsidise your driving for lifetime still. I do think they should allow you to purchase supercharging at a higher rate should you need to do a road trip. I guess you there is some mileage (pardon the pun) in saying be grateful you got free Electricity (Supercharging) for over a year in some cases!
    At the end of the day, Supercharging is a service provided to customers of Tesla and its factored into the purchase price. When you buy a salvage vehicle, you're not a customer of Tesla, you're a customer of a salvage auction / insurance company and that is reflected in the price.

    I won't EVER buy a Tesla for these facts you've described because the repair anxiety would be a nightmare, especially when an automobile is the second most expensive household purchase after the home. Owning a Tesla of any kind just doesn't make sense.

With their God like complexes from the Tesla employees, getting parts and service was less than stellar. The experience was horrible. I was able to Supercharge for 7 months until recently, when I scheduled a visit with mobile service to replace a part. Immediately after Supercharging was taken away. I honestly belive had I not had Tesla service it, I would still be Supercharging today. Of course the tech denied it and said they dont have the ability to do that, but that total bullshit. Anyways, i really dont see myself using Supercharging since I dont really need the car for long distance driving, but it was nice to know it was there. I mean, I understand the logic behind that. You can't just rebuild a Tesla from scrap, maybe from 2 different cars for half the price and expect Tesla to enable supercharging for you. Who knows how u built that car. 1 little malfunction and the whole car burns down. And anyways supercharging is just a big pro for teslas, nobody said its included, in most cases u still have to pay for it. So I understand Elon, he doesn't want bad news floating around about home built burning teslas at superchargers. And of course I understand u guys as well, just think a bit about it.

    I think you or Rich need to do a more in depth video specifically on buying branded title Tesla's. There are a ton of branded title Tesla's on the market. I have seen dual motor long range model 3's listed for only $5-6k discount from new with a branded title. Why are they still so expensive? Who is buying these that is driving this price, and do they know supercharging won't work for them?

  • @Digital-Dan

    I'd think they could split the difference by charging salvage owners the rate that they're charging Model 3 owners for supercharging -- not free any more. Event this doesn't totally make sense. But I expect most would go for it.

    So, I think this is where we in Australia have the advantage over the US. And we need that advantage because our charging infrastructure is generally crap.
    In Australia Tesla is adopting the CCS2 charging scheme. This means that Tesla cars can charge from non Tesla rapid chargers - up to 350kW - in addition to charging from super chargers.

    Nobody here can tell me the damage to this car here warranted the salvage designation. It had some suspension damage and some roof damage. The car was easily fixed and it is back on the road. there is no reason to block it from any charging networks.
    Does anybody really want an insurance agent to decide if a car is worthy to get supercharging or not, because that is what is happening here. As these cars get older it will take less and less damage to total them. Imagine getting blacklisted from supercharging because you creased your left front fender.

      I think it comes down to the battery and where it's positioned, also susceptible to damage if impacted externally. So what should happen is the battery packs get examined and given the all clear, any remaining supercharging is honored.

    I am a car person but replaced the 21" wheels with 19" wheels because it would have been idiotic to ride on 21" wheels with our badly maintained streets. Having dumb large wheels that damage easily while offering less range does not necessarily make someone a car enthusiast :)

    There's always a way to hack ANY technology. And charging the car high speed would just use high amperage. If I had one I would look into creating a portable home built supercharger system. I would even bet once someone finds the tech specs of their supercharger network there would be a way to spoof their system to let you supercharge. Don't just give up. Where there's a will there's a way.

    Was not aware of the massive range drop off on winter !!! I know normal electric cars lose 10-20% of range, but 40% is crazy ! Is this just the model S ? Or is the model 3 affected the same ?

      They are all affected in one way or the other. A 10-20% loss must be a very mild winter :-) Model Y is the first Tesla to have a heat pump, by the way.

    Years ago, maybe in the 1980's people were buying 8 foot satellite dishes, and getting free HBO, SHOWTIME, etc. Everyone kinda knew it was wrong, and eventually they required licenses, boxes, etc. So guys were buying Teslas for 20% value and rebuilding them and getting the benefit without paying for it. Kinda the same thing. You got away with it for a while, but you dont see any 8' foot dishes in peoples back yard anymore......

    Is there no one we can reach out to in the government about this? I mean we pay for a car and I can understand if they said no supercharging for free, but disabling a vital function because they can is like bullying the public. Maybe all of us can do some research and see if we cant come up with something?
