    Absolutely great review and video is of high quality resolution! I will wait and see in the coming years regarding any styling changes and range extensions. These are the early years of full electric vehicles and I anticipate major improvements in the future. For now I'm happy with my 2015 328i. I still get great mileage and I really don't have to visit the gas station that much.

    Advice for winter. USE THE SEAT HEATER! The heated seats use a few hundred watts of power, as compared to the thousands of watts required for the motor moving the car. Heating using the cabin heater uses a few thousand watts, whereas driving is up to 20 thousand watts at highway speeds. In the winter, we typically see 30% more energy usage here in Ontario Canada vs the summer.

      Went back through and realized it's not a REX, just assumed since you said you do 50 miles/day. Winter might be a little tough, but the car has been averaging around 100 miles per charge for me as well.

    Nice video! I slept outside for a Tesla reservation for a Tesla Model 3. I was Tesla dealership on Saturday and now I don't have much hope my car's not going to be delivered until the second quarter of 2018. In addition to that I have little hope that I will get the $7,500 rebate. Thanks for the video and it was very informative and I love the car!

  • @Wetsuitntie
    @Wetsuitntie 6 років тому +8

    Nice job! I bought a range-extender version (same colour, same wheels as yours) 9 months ago. Having owned a succession of BMW convertibles over the last 30 years - and still enjoying my current 640i - I have to say that, although the i3 is something of an ugly duckling, it's an absolute hoot to drive! Great acceleration, great handling and eminently practical for daily errands or longer commutes, the electric drivetrain is a technical masterpiece. It offers totally intuitive one-pedal driving that's genuinely fun to use.

    Can we STOP calling them suicide doors, it's connotation isn't exactly positive for those who may have poor mental health... At the same time, great review and great intro to this car which I'll rent for 3 days in about a weeks time!

    • @jpking51
      @jpking51 5 років тому +1

      Excellent point, and I'm open to suggestions for alternatives: front-opening? reverse-opening? I unthinkingly used the term "suicide doors" in describing the rear doors on my Honda Element to a coworker whose husband I knew had committed suicide some years earlier. To complicate matters, she was not a car person, was unfamiliar with the term, and asked me what it meant. I explained it, but also wished the earth would have swallowed me up at that moment.

    I just stumbled on your channel and I love your posts. I'm also a huge fan of quality in everything I own, shelling out extra cash to make sure what I have is top notch. Question regarding the charge distance. Do you know if there is a portable charger to carry in the car, just in case you need a small charge to get you to the next charging station?

    • @The_Kavalier
      @The_Kavalier  7 років тому

      Welcome, Gabe! I haven't looked into a device like that, but it is a good idea. There is a charger that comes with it which plugs into a regular wall outlet which is nice and small to fit into the "frunk" and you can plug in anywhere you access a wall outlet. I have yet to need anything like that yet but would be handy to have..

    Looks like a great car. I can see why you're so happy with it. I just got a Chevy Volt, and I also love it. It seems like everyone who gets an EV loves it. That's why I think EVs are going to take over way faster than people think. You can't argue with customer satisfaction.

    Thank You
    P.S. Does this model have lane tracking ?

  • @jeremyrowland5224
    @jeremyrowland5224 7 років тому

    Super video - great insight into everyday use and some of the less publicised, neat features. I've just ordered an i3 pure electric (upgrading from a top-of-the-range LEAF - my first EV - I've had since March last year, which believe it or not was enough of a glimpse of the future to ween me off my 987 Boxster and its catastrophic fuelling costs in the UK, much as I loved it), and am a complete convert to electric motoring.
    Quick question about the adaptive cruise control, (Driving Assistant Plus - don't know if the package has the same name or exact features in the US) an option I've not seen addressed in any other video. You're obviously a big fan, and I'm sold on its benefits on the freeway. It's advertised here as also working for city traffic jams with full stop-start low-speed crawling and steering assistance, and I wondered if you have experience of that and if so how well it works? I often drive from my town into central London, and if this aspect of the adaptive cruise control is all it's cracked up to be by BMW, I'll be ringing my dealer to add it to my spec. Any advice much appreciated.
    Cheers!

    • @The_Kavalier
      @The_Kavalier  7 років тому +1

      Hi Jeremy,
      If you slow down my commute timelapse, you can see that my first 6-7 miles of driving are stop and go traffic and the adaptive cruise control is INCREDIBLE. It keeps pace with the car in front from a reasonable distance and will even go to and from a complete stop. Once you sit idle you need to re-engage it with a button but it works extremely well for this type of driving, not just highway. During my commute I barely press go/brake pedal due to this feature and I genuinely miss it when I drive other vehicles.
      I don't know if it was or wasn't an option on my model but I don't have any lane assist/steering correction, just acceleration and braking but that's all I need to be hooked.
      I didn't know that it was not mentioned in other i3 videos maybe I should make a dedicated video on that feature based on how much I like it ;-)

    Hi l enjoyed your review and l am considering moving over to an ev but l do have some specific needs. I have attempted to research the following on the BMW website but short of visiting a showroom I am unable to find out what I need. Can you help me out? My wife has mobility problems and so we often need to use a wheelchair. Can you tell me the sizes (especially the length of the boot, sorry trunk-British!) from the rear seat when upright to the lid/opening? Also if the drivers and passenger seats in the front are height adjustable, if so what's the minimum (lowest) and maximum height in inches. If these are typically within a certain range to suit my wife's needs it will certainly sway my decision to buy a i3. I particularly liked your comment regarding the i3 's size as our UK roads and parking spaces are compact and I think thei3would serve them well. Here's hoping to from you

      I'm in New Zealand and have the same problem. I did some rudimentary maths and a personal import from Britain would get me an i3 that costs $55k in NZ, for $9k less. That's an all-in calculation, which makes it far more affordable for me, and because they hold there value very well, the total cost of ownership is considerably better than any other EV except a Tesla - which I can't afford to buy a set of tyres for, and even if I was that loaded, I can't wait the super long delivery times for.

    In simple terms. How did you figure the cost per month you were paying to charge your vehicle. I am using the default charger that came with my car. I have seen lots of posts but seem confusing. Where we live in North Carolina the charging rate are the same through out the day. Do does not matter what time of day I charge. I think it's 10 to 11 per kw. I am driving the 2015 Rex edition.
    I found this info and was wondering if this was a good place to start because this is math I could understand.
    Reset your trip computer, drive for a week. See what it says for your "efficiency" - its displayed in mi/kWh. Know that its lower
    in the winter than the summer, since it takes energy to heat the batteries and car. Depending on where you live,
    it could be a 30% difference summer to winter.
    Estimate your miles/month and divide by the mi/kWh shown. Multiply by 1.25 to account for inefficiencies, pre-conditioning, etc.
    So, if you drive for a week and show 3.9 mi/kWh, and you estimate that you drive ~900 miles/month, you'd get
    900/3.9 = ~230 kWh * 1.25 = ~288 kWh. @ $0.10/kWh, that's just under $30.

    Great review of the i3. I commute into downtown Atlanta and have a roundtrip of 66 miles each day. Sounds like you do 50 and it works fine. Do you think it would be worth it to pay a little more to get the range extender version on this car or not? I guess I'm also thinking that if I drive the car for say 5+ years will the car still have enough range for me to make the 66 mile commute.

      Sounds like it would be tight, especially if you want air conditioning I'd get the range extender.

    I have what might seem like a strange question. How stain resistant are the wool seats in that colour? I hat a white leather interior Audi with scotchgaurd protection and blue jeans ruined the seat. Great review ....hope to order a 2017 red model soon.

    • @The_Kavalier

      The wool has been quite stain resistant. I was most worried about it when I got a new pair of Raw Denim and turning the whole seat blue but after months of wearing different denim it has been okay. I am seeing more color transfer and wear on the olive leather than the wool but they have both been great so far.
