Custom made door stop for Barndominium 214

- Outward swinging exterior doors can cause a lot of damage to building if the wind catches it and swings it out hard. It can break door jamb, bend outside metal, and even rip the door off the hinges. I prefer the concrete mounted door stops, but they are usually too short, so they don't work. I ended up making one that works very well for our purpose.

Talk about going the extra mile for a customer.....👍👍
I enjoyed your lathe work, I went through a machinist apprenticeship and settled in on lathes, then progressed to CNC, and then to programming CNC lathes and up to 5 axis milling machines. I did this while going to school. I transitioned to the computer world and did 28 years as a Network Engineer, now I’m retired and enjoyed seeing some lathe work. 😀👍
Once again, great craftsmanship... Great job Erik... Awesome clean up Leroy... 😆😆😆
Oh Wow! Texas Barndominum Machinist!! Way to go Sr. Erik! Good job! Handsome Leroy u did good too!✌❤🙏🙏
First i respected u Eric but now after i have seen your maschinetools i like you.👍
$500 door stop, Leroy to pick on, priceless!
Paying attention to the details.you guys are the best. Eric you can do it all.
You're a man of many talents. Looks like you've spent plenty of time using that lathe. Great solution, and it looks wonderful.
Thanks Erick, This will keep my shop door from smacking my Milling machine.Thanks.
Wow, that metal work was amazing and it was a great design, as well! Never paint them, they look great in natural metal! Thank you fro sharing!
A man and his lathe. . . Very nice.
Man looks great! Way better than anything at the store.
You are a man of many talents.
Came to watch Barndominium stuff, came away feeling like I watched TOT or AvE. 😆
He's fabricobbling a door dingus.
Not AvE, I didn’t cuss at all. 😂
Very nice, great job. That is a strong and techy looking door stop
Nice job that looks good. Also remember to take the t-handle out of the chuck before turning lathe on. 🤣🤣 When I went through my apprenticeship a guy left it in and it went through the big clock hanging down from the ceiling in the building. 😬😬
😬
Jack of all trades like myself. New found respect man.
That was sweet, as Leroy said, "bet you won't find one these at any Lowes or HD" or any other place. Keep up the great work.
This Old Tony would be so proud 😋
Its gotta look GOOD baby!!!!!!!!!!
You did a awesome job fabricating ! I just used a piece of oak screwed to the floor to stop my pinch point .
Its amazing to see other people able to use lathes... its hard to find such tradesman these days
To see a time served man who has proper hand skills and the ability to produce true items of craftsmanship. The attention to detail and the easy way you transfer knowledge. A real pleasure sir.
Thank you.
LOL " stay away from the Chuck, it hurts"... that'd be My Advice, too. Saludos desde eSpringdale Arkansas BuenGente😉😉😉!!!
Nice Floor Stop, you could always use a Glynn-Johnson 450 series Over Head Stop, so there is no tripping hazard.
Fantastic craftsmanship great idea and I'm so glad you did not paint it.... and that is a good looking front door too
Simple but custom, nice work.
Man everything you do is top notch 👌 👏 👍
That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing this.
You have all the TOYS! Great work, going the extra mile!
Tools, they are tools. 😉
Texas Barndominiums yep, that’s what I tell my wife as well! Haha
I wish you did more stuff around your shop because I loved watching all the cool tools
Would love to see more videos like this.
That's custom ,nice work ...
Good job, that looks great !
Outstanding
First class!
That’s a beauty mate , nice job
Nice work !
Great video. You seem to be a man of many talents.
😊
Thank you for posting. As mentioned by others very nice craftsmanship on all sides. Leroy that is a very helpful tip on drilling . I often set 1/2 moon door stops for stairwell doors. There are so many versions of door stops. Door hinges with limited swing.
Hello Texas!!
Eric, let me make power tapping in the lathe easier and safer for your tap. Your procedure is all good but instead of pushing your tailstock to enter the tap in the work stop short of the hole and turn the handwheel. Leave the tailstock free just like you are now. Just try to pace the advance of your tap with the tailstock ram. To withdraw it's the same. Turn the handwheel backwards to match the withdrawal of the tap. Pushing the tailstock to start the tap is a very easy way to chip your tap. Don't ask how many I have chipped myself till I figured this out.
Great work
Wow
The ingenuity that
that guy has
pretty darn cool 👍👍
Eric I don't know much about your background or education but your knowledge of many things is impressive, the correct terminology of machining really caught my ear because I'm a machinist here in Illinois for Mueller.Co. Great channel.
This is the reason I avoid outswing doors at all costs. On a windy day they will get violently thrown open/closed if left open for even a few seconds.
more videos like this . i seen the mill in another vid and was hoping you would make some videos with machining.thank you
Hechele primo....👍👍👍👍👍
Slick
If you will leave a tail on the tape marking the drill stop depth it will knock the dust away from the holes as you get close.
Like it, Nice Job‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸
Sweet. Simple design that does the job and looks great, too. Reminds me a lot of the bolt from a paintball marker.
I wonder if maybe some clear coat wouldn't be a good idea, just to prevent oxidization and keep the aluminum shiny?
Good job Erik, looks good!
Man I could I have used a few of these lately. Outswing doors create such issues with wind. These would of been sweet, since the outswing doors on decks usually have a higher threshold, so you need taller stops.
Hey Eric, on a future video, can you show some framing; how you get a water and air seal when installing windows and an HVAC install. Keep post great videos. Thanks.
Watching you make that on the lathe was kinda therapeutic 😇
You should do a tour of your workshop for a future video!
I guess having the hinges on the outside is good when you loose your keys.
Good way to get your house broken into.
Neat lathe great video
I missed why a residential exterior door is outward opening. Thats gonna confuse a firefighter at some.point. lol.
The partial look we get from inside looks like there are door ways just inside the entrance, would block egress perhaps?
I’ve had to install a few in homes with small entrances. Bi-levels tend to have small floor area space. So ingress with a in swing door causes traffic issues trying to close the door.
But the hinges are on the outside?! This is a safety problem. All an intruder would have to do is take the pins out. Super poorly designed.
"Ok Leroy let's put it in".
Is that really "What she said"???
Why is she always allegedly saying things?
We will never know.
Good video as always.
😎
👍👍👍👍👍
That is really nice!
I was glad to see Leroy then he was gone great machine work brother that’s your hobby right? Keep your videos coming try to get more Leroy besides beginning and end lol
Awesome, wow you should put them on your site for sale.
He’s like ok zaddy leroy now stick it in ! Deep! Lol
😂
I would add a strike plate to the door to minimize the damage caused by it banging against that pin. Otherwise I think it a great little solution.
I had a buddy years ago, whose dad was over the engineering department of a major manufacturer. I went into the basement shop of his dad on a Saturday while my friend went upstairs to bug his mom for money. His dad had a piece of a metal rod on the lathe where he had welded two pieces together. I asked him what he was doing and he said he was repairing his sons car. He turned to me and asked how long the tie rod had been broken on his sons car. I said a week or two. He exploded and said, don't you guys know you could have been killed? I said that I did, but his son said it wasn't to dangerous. Good show today Erik. That's a good piece of machinery to have around. Hopefully you will never have to use it to save your sons life. Take care. Vaughn
Taps normally tell you what drill size to use also. It will say on the side of the tap. You could also make a delrin sleeve to go on the outside. You can get delrin at any plastic supply.
Fun video Eric, geez I ain't been around machine tools for more than a decade that was fun to watch so when are you going to go into mass production with that door stop?
Nice!!! Might paint it safety yellow lol
Good solution, but you could get deeper hinges too! Nice work all around though!
Great work!!! You need to have a camera watching that area for the first time someone catches that with their bare foot.
They'd have to be walking super close to the wall lol
Nice workmanship on the stop but I don't think it will last as the door likely has a lot of momentum and leaverage behind it especially if the wind catches it and will probably dent the door and eventually loosen the anchor bolt. I think I would use a much wider piece of square or rectangular stock with a rubber/urethane strip to soften the blow and have another anchor bolt, maybe even a third to stand up to the weight and momentum of the door. The wind or kids will eventually slam it hard against the stop unfortunately. Hopefully your stop will last. 👍
👍❤️
Shouldn't the hinges be on the inside of the door so someone cant just pull the pin on them and break in?
I don’t know about this door specifically but I have an outswing door for one of my doors. There are small pins in the door that go into the frame (think like a safe door) also the hinges on mine are security hinges make it hard to get the pins out.
Didn't know you were a machinist too
Can you give a tour of your shop
Very nice job very well explained as always. How long would it have taken to make without filming the process? All the best.
15 mins tops.
Excellent chose not painting it! Looks good...
Exposed to the elements, oxidation?
The position of that stop will do nothing when the door swings hard. The leverage point will still destroy the door and blow that stop out of the concrete. It needs to be further out. But I understand why you put it there and not 3ft further out..
You should’ve put it further away from the hinge . The location is too close to the hinge you need it out further to the right away from the hinge so it won’t rip the door off the hinges when it finally does swing open and hit the doorstop
Honestly would have installed a commercial-grade automatic closer myself.
They look ugly
Why you did not put a stop at the top of the door by screwing a framed angle right next to the door at the wall? Ground stops are tending to become a trip hazard. And a stop with optional "hold" function would be nicer, too.
You should sell them they look real good. Glad you didn't paint it
Nice job, fashion and function. So just curious..... Why does the door swing outward ? Don't most exterior doors swing inward ?
It saves space on the interior of the home but is also less secure. If this barndo is in a rural area, possibly on a gated ranch, they may not be overly concerned with the loss of security.
$55.00 Doorstop, Love it! What is the lathe?
Should have used one of your old gun barrels. Lol
That’s pretty cool but why not install a door closure? Did he not like the look?
No. Ugly. Lol
Why does this outside door swing out?
Machinest-donium?
Taking orders ?
Maybe add an earth magnet to hold the door open... I've had the wind slam one of these back close on me... Watch yer fingers...
If it was made from stainless steel both the stop and the door then you would have both a stop and a door holder
Was that a .50 cal projectile in top of your lathe at 2:08?
😬🤷♂️🙄
Man I always thought I was being smart by using electrical tape to mark my concrete bits depth, at least great minds think alike hah.
Why are the hinges exposed to the outside of the building? Couldn't someone pop the hinge pins and then gain access to the building? I'm sure there's a reason for this but never heard an answer. Thanks
No. They aren’t regular hinges.
Texas Barndominiums ok thx.
It looks like a mini bollard
Hope you fix Matt's barn.
😂
My wife has 2 that take AA batteries
Is all that red staining from your mistakes when operating the lathe?
I bumped my dykem Can and tipped it over. I cleaned up the floor but left it on the lathe as a reminder to always cover it up.
@@TexasBarndominiums I saw it sitting on the lathe . Just thought I'd make a little joke.
