    Thanks for taking the time to put this up. Very useful. I really feel the USN mid tier cruisers got whacked again. Last release they put that god awful arc on the guns and now they took the range away. The need something back.

    Some thoughts:
    For Situation Awareness in a BB, unless you are going for a concealment setup, if you get yourself singled out to need it you are mostly still going to get crap on hard.
    For Manual Fire Control, Atlanta AA can benefit greatly with how her AA comes mostly from her DP guns.

    in my personal experience, basics of survivability is far more useful on battleships than situational awareness. battleships should never be sailing alone in the first place, as a lone battleship is usually a dead battleship. but aside from that, the number of times you get set on fire far outnumbers the amount of times that knowing when you're spotted will help you evade torpedoes (any more than the amount of maneuvering and speed changing you should be doing in a battleship anyways).
    again, that's just my personal take on it.
    otherwise, the guide was pretty helpful with some decisions i needed to make, so thanks. :)

    I will ALWAYS take situational awareness on my BBs, knowing when a DD is around and can see you in those tense solo situations is vital.

    the expert marksman skill takes something like 15 seconds off the traverse of the Yamato and the Warspite.. and cuts the Colorado's traverse time down to 38.6 seconds.... that is absolutely worth it if not essential

    One thing to mention chase is about how you can move captains around premium ships now, and how skills for low and high tiers is not neccessarily a good thing. ie The torp bonus at lvl 3 whilst good for high tier japanese dds, unfortunately makes torps in low tier prems pretty bad. Ive found all of a sudden my ijn cruiser captain better in my fujin for example (as I opt for concealment but havent changed my torps in the ijn CA captain.) Just a thought ...

    Personally, I would argue that Situational Awareness is useful for battleships more on a case-by-case basis, especially compared against Basics of Survivability. The thing is, any reduction on fire damage will be a critical extension to a battleship's combat endurance, which, given the ease of detectability of some battleships, is definitely at least on-level with intel.

    I personally went with have AFT and Manual AA for my USN BBs. It may not be the recommended set up but I like to make my battleship as painful for a CV to attack as possible. This also frees up an extra point that I can use on an extra skill. I certainly wouldn't do this in an IJN BB though.

  • @TheSaberra

    I'm pretty sure that +400hp skill serves well German and US cruisers, because you can actually survive previous insta-death with a well aimed battleship salvo.

    I disagree on a number of points, chiefly with the lvl 3 skill for increased consumables. Having an extra heal for any boat that can have it is a mandatory skill. Maneuverability and HP is life. It's like expert marksman, faster traverse is increased ROF and therefore DPM which in turn increases points/win chance. Other than USN DDs which have amazing turrets and IJN where they are not a deciding factor, faster turrets mean there is more incentive to maneuvering while still dealing damage. Same for DDs and last stand. Maneuvering is life so having any of those modules knocked out completely is death.
    I like the new skills but frankly the lvl layout as it is in effect robs any player of 2 points because of the particular ones that are must haves. I don't feel any of the lvl 5 skills aside from concealment warrant that many points. The only lvl 1 skill worth having is vigilance and therefore should be automatic on all ships giving a point pack to the player.

    for manual defensive AA skill at tier 4 captain, go look at your ship's AA guns manually and look if you have enough DPS on your 85mm + guns to justify getting it(remember its + 100% if you have like 200 DPS on your AA guns bigger than 85mm then its a bigger boost than AFT, its a hit and miss and useful for montanas but not on yamato (not enough big AA gun DPS) for examaple.

    Very helpful, thanks a lot Chase :) I got a question which might sound unusual, do you think it could work well to use only t1-t3 skills for low tier battleships like t5-t6 ? I took multiple tier 1-2 skills without realising how important the order is, but also thinking it might not be that helpful using t5 t4 skills on a low-mid tier battleship. dont even think i can get a t5 one before.. t7 maybe? Would appreciate if you can let me know what you think on that :)

    Preventive Maintenance skill gives a stated -50% incapacitated modules. Does this skill give the same benefit to the chance of modules being Destroyed?? It does not mention that in the description. Can anyone Confirm that this skill does help against Guns being Destroyed as opposed to merely being incapacitated?

    iChase, the issue i have with the new level 5 skill "manual fire control for secondary armament" is that if you have targets on both sides of you ship your secondaries wont fire on both only the one you select. Could be argued the decreased dispersion means you'd finish off that DD sooner before needing it on the other target (most likely a DD) but still i am worried it won't be as useful as it initially sounded.. i am a secondary build battleship player so can i see what your thoughts and anyone else who sees this are about whether it really is worth the 5 points for the 60% decrease in dispersion at the cost of not firing both sides at once.

    iChaseGaming what do you think about manual secondary firing control for US battleships, like North Caroline and above? And what do you think about the build on błyskawica, cause I have one and I don't know should I give him shorter range of torpedoes but faster or have one aditional charge of consumables. I'll make more stuff as you said but it's really hard to fight without incoming fire alert, especially on battleships. And say something about build for tirpitz, I would be really pleased.

  • @JClark2600
    @JClark2600 8 років тому

    iChase, if I were to take torpedo acceleration in a carrier wouldn't that help my torp planes avoid some of the BB's AA?
    For example, Midway torp bombers travel at about 150knots. Once I enter the 3.1KM envelope of the 23*3 25mm, 1/2 of Yama's final layer of AA, they will deal 281 damage/sec. Say the arming range on the torps is 0.3KM without the +5 knots upgrade and it will be 0.5KM with the upgrade. So that leaves me with a 73 sec round trip without the upgrade and a 55 sec round trip with the upgrade. I can expect to see 20,445 damage done to my torp bombers without the upgrade and 15,280 damage with the upgrade. Seeing that my squad only has 12,720hp wouldn't the upgrade be a good investment with respect to the other upgrades?
    (Disclaimer: I've rounded many of the numbers, took a guess at torp arming distance, substituted the arch flight path of torp bombers for a linear flight path, assumed that the 180 degree turn that the trop bombers make after dropping is equal to 0 sec, there are no other captain skills applied that may impact the calculation, and I've neglected the other AA because the damage/sec is low and negligible)

    @brianhkamau1907 8 років тому

    hey chase I would like to disagree on the first row of skills for BB i think basic survivability is more important than situational awareness since -15% to fire and flooding is quite good when you team up with damage control system modification 2 and some flags hence reducing fire and flood timers to less than a minute considering most players target the battleship that has just put out a fire or stopped flooding this can be helpfull,,,whereas using situational aware is kinda useless in fighting russian and american dds since they will blind fire at you whereas for japanese dds they can monitor your movements and cause you a nightmare when theyy start one flood on you when repairing and also if you spot torps when you are in a BB i would suggest launching your spotter/fighter plane since it gives you hope of spotting enemy dds since most spotter planes fly like 4km away from the ship and add their detectability range this gives you chance to spot dds since most dds like playing dangerously and come close till the edge of their surface detectability so if you have a plane up u can detect them from 7.1km away which is max torp range for some dds ...so siituational awareness is not as important as basics of survivability on battleships

    • @ichasegaming
      @ichasegaming  8 років тому

      +2K14 SNEAKY (2k14sneaky) These are my recommendations, I would personally never give up situational awareness for anything else in the first row. The ability to know exactly when you're spotted and when you're stealthed up is a huge advantage

  • @FlyinPieDude
    @FlyinPieDude 8 років тому

    I feel like if you need that incoming fire alert perk you're not paying attention at all, sailing in straight lines, and like to turn broadside to enemy battleships. But hey, that's just my opinion.

    Well IMO I didn't quite like using Vigilance on my cruisers or BBs, on high tiers we can buy the Target Acquiring System which can do the same job, so why not use Superintendent for more heal? But use this with the mind of grinding the whole line.

    • @ichasegaming
      @ichasegaming  8 років тому

      +Inn Kang Ng Because for cruisers you go with concealment module, so vigilance is useful otherwise you get surprised. As for BB, due to reduced rudder shift with the previous patch, and now faster torps, the earlier you see torps the better

    • @benjaminng5049
      @benjaminng5049 8 років тому

      +iChaseGaming Thanks for the reply :D. So the purpose of Concealment setup for cruiser is more space for invisi firing and running away right? Cuz I never try that before, in previous patch I didnt use Situational Awareness but use Incoming fire alert for my CAs and sometimes I quite regret for not choosing the SA as I cannot find the particular time to reposition myself.

      +Márcio Marques US Gunboats - Situational Awareness, Last Stand/Torpedo Armament Expertise, Torpedo Acceleration at high tiers or superintendent, AFT, Concealment Expert

    • @marciomarques4236
      @marciomarques4236 8 років тому

      +iChaseGaming So, at level 1, the Situational Awareness is pretty straightforward, more so for a Destroyer. I was tempted to take Basic Firing Training since US Destroyers are brawling gunboats. Does it make sense to do so?
      At level 2 I took Last Stand like you said but again, Expert Marksman seems like something that would fit a US Destroyer nicely. Should I take it as well?
      At level 3, I chose Superintendent. Vigilance seems better than Torpedo Acceleration because torpedoes aren't as important to US as they are to Japan.
      Opinion?
      At level 4, AFT seems good but US guns aren't as fast as russian 130mm so it will be much harder to hit anything from far away. Demolition Expert and Survivability Expert seem like good choices as well.
      Opinion?
      At level 5, Concealment Expert it's really the best skill to take although Preventive Maintenance would be a good choice if concealment wasn't so important for a Destroyer.
      I want to thank you for your answer. Your videos are really informative and enjoyable to watch. Keep up and take care!

    Chase I have a question regarding aiming. I currently use the gunsight that has the green numbers, I can't remember whose it is but it starts with a "N" In any case my understanding is the important information is the hang time of the shell, lets say just for an example is 6, now do I use that notch as the bullseye so to say and place it where i want to hit the ship or what? I am aware something was done to zooming in but I have not been able to find out exactly and how it affects aiming.

    • @ichasegaming
      @ichasegaming  8 років тому

      +Avalon19511 Errr...I am not sure about custom crosshairs. But you might want to check out the Captain's Academy video on aiming, I explain it with the vanilla crosshair

    • @Avalon19511
      @Avalon19511 8 років тому

      I really ment the speed of the ship not hang time, but the marks on the gunsight go 2, 4, 6 etc representing the speed of the ship your firing at, so as I said earlier if the speed is 6 my understanding is you put the hash mark that says 6 on the front of the ship, is that correct? Already watched that video and though it was good it did not answer my question. I'm using a Cleveland by the way with that horrible hang time. Also do you know anything about how the zoom was changed, a lot of players have mentioned that it is throwing their shots off?

    • @ichasegaming
      @ichasegaming  8 років тому

      +João Gonçalves (johngoncalves10) Typically, unless you like to respec a lot, the goal is to build a captain for end game as you go up a line. So that's why I generally present end game captains

    • @joao_goncalves
      @joao_goncalves 8 років тому

      +iChaseGaming Yes I get that. My trouble is that I'm still mid way through the trees and I have no idea how the top ship is like. I don't really have much opportunity during the public tests to try them out enough times to get a feel for the ship, while knowing what I need for the ship I have right now. And sometimes the two don't match.

  • @Vanrustic
    @Vanrustic 8 років тому

    If USN CVs shouldn't get torpedo acceleration what should i use for CVs? the freqency that i run in to a higher tier CV is rare (as you stated). I and if you are in a fight for your life i don't think 10% cool down time will save you from death as a CV so high alert isn't that useful. IMO i think as long as you arn't using a fighter config and have at least 1 us CV should use torpedo acceleration

    • @ichasegaming
      @ichasegaming  8 років тому

      +Vanrustic 10% helps more than you think (saved me a few times when I got bombed and got set on fire and then missed an extra bomber). Also the torpedo acceleration actually results in you dropping torpedoes further away which causes US torps to spread out more. Reducing the damage you could potentially do.

    Ichase, with regards to secondary guns on battleships like the Nagato, Amagi and so on, is it really usefull to take basic firering training? It only affects guns up to 139mm, and the secondarys are bigger IIRC. So wouldn't it only work on the 4 127mm AA guns those have and not much else?

    • @MasterSasori09

    • @SBSDK1

      +Sasori Akasuna No it doesn't. If you read it says "with a caliber of up to 139mm" and most of the japanese BB's secondaries are 140mm or above on tier 5-8. The Izumo and Yamato start to get more guns with a smaller caliber, but still.
      On the other hand, all US BB's secondaries are 127mm.

    nothing against you chase and i really appreciate you putting this together for us but its a little frustrating when you say that we should try out different skills for ourselves when there is almost no turning back once we choose a skill unless we want to pay money wach time we want to try something new...its been my gripe with the game and wish we could at least use the in game credits to re spec our captains

    • @ichasegaming
      @ichasegaming  8 років тому

    • @palto18
      @palto18 8 років тому

      iChaseGaming i agree and my gripe is more with the pay model as opposed to your choices...i have no problem spending money on the game but it really doesnt help promote diversity in playstyle, especially within the same class...for example, i am currently on the pensacola so when i assigned my cleveland captain captain to it i found that i wanted different training because the ships play differently...i guess i would just like there to be some sort of trial period for skills or allow you to just unlock them as you go so you can switch them up as you wish...sometimes i just want to play and see what an AA destroyer build might be like.

      +FedralBI It will still help your AA; but your main gun batteries are 152mm; the range boost is only for 139mm and below.

    I think situ awareness for BBs is not that useful, since you already get spotted from very long ranges and literally anything else except other BBs spots you faster than vice versa.

    iChase: my opinion on your set of skills for IJN Cruisers
    Tier 1 - Yes
    Tier 2 - Yes
    Tier 3 - Yes
    TIer 4 - Ok
    Tier 5 - What in fucking hell are you doing?
    Just voicing it out, but for everything else, I'd have to agree with

    • @ichasegaming
      @ichasegaming  8 років тому

      +Tuan Nguyen And what would u take for a Zao?

    • @Personat0r
      @Personat0r 8 років тому

      I'd have to go with decrease in chance of incapacitation of modules. As a cruiser, you're usually engaging at ranges where it's possible for the enemy CA to damage your guns, or worse, the enemy BBs taking out your guns completely (Yamato/Montana).
      The main purpose of a concealment skill is for survivability and sneaking about in a battle. As a cruiser, sneaking about isn't really quite viable because you still have (at least) 10km detection range. A Zao would get 11km with the skill (12.6 x 0.88). That's 3km better than the Des Moines (w/o the skill) and would give you about 20-30 seconds to "set up" your guns to fire at it before being seen. But is that really worth it compared to preventing your guns from being destroyed or your torpedo tubes? In both scenarios, you still get shot at, but it's just a matter of time. However, in one scenario, you have a better chance of saving your guns, your usefulness to the team, than the other.
      In disengagements, it doesn't really matter because the Zao has 16km firing range, and detection for cruisers while firing is +6km. (Probably unnecessary here) With cruisers, it's impossible (currently) to play like an American or Russian DD (shooting outside of detection range). So, again, it's useless compared to saving your guns for later when running away. As people do shoot at you while running away, especially if you're pointing directly away, then the chances of the guns being damaged/destroyed is higher (chance by relative size of hitbox when compared to broadside vs showing stern/bow).
      In summary, because the concealment skill is mainly a survivability skill, the better choice would be decrease in incapacitation of modules. Cruisers need to kill their opponents to survive, not stay hidden. Now unless I'm completely wrong about the detection mechanics while firing with the Zao (it's ACTUALLY not 6km), then I would rescind my first comment.
      I also would like to say that, in the first comment, I was simply putting it bluntly. I don't mean to offend you, as I still like your videos and how your organize thoughts and talk about the game/commentate on a replay. Keep up the good work!

    • @ichasegaming
      @ichasegaming  8 років тому

      +Tuan Nguyen The reason you go with concealment expert is that if you go full stealth spec (skill, module and camo) the Zao's detection range is 9.7km, if you add this to the roughly 6km increase in detection range when firing your guns, the Zao's detection is a maximum of around 15.7km. The Zao with the range boost module is 18.8km. Giving you a massive 3km stealth fire buffer zone that you can shoot at BBs with impunity and they can't spot you. Which is why Concealment Expert for a Zao over everything else at tier 5

    • @Personat0r
      @Personat0r 8 років тому

      Ah ok. I rescind my first statement. However, firing at the range would sound as difficult as firing in a USN DD. The long air time for the shells at that range (10 sec is still pretty long), especially for the Des Moines (13 or more?), would be difficult for most players to handle. I say this because most people are normally fully zoomed in on w/e target they're firing at, and forget to zoom out a bit to allow for better view & leading on the target, albeit making it harder to see whether your target is turning or not. The Cleveland's abysmally slow shell velocity is already difficult as is, so I can only imagine at tier 10 for the Zao & DM.
      Also, wouldn't the Zao's detection w/ camo, Conceal Sys & Conceal Expert be 9.5, not .7, and the firing range be 18.56? I remember that it's -3% camo, -10% Conc Sys, -12% Conc Expert (total -25%), and +16% range w/ Arty Plotting Room. Guess it doesn't matter because it's still 3km buffer zone.
      I can imagine that it'd be funny as hell to shoot at BBs w/o being detected, especially w/ the DM's insane RoF. However, I think this would be even more difficult to do in a CA than a DD due to turret traverse and turning radius/rudder shift time.
      Yay, I'm wrong! And I have some more stealth-firing fun to look forward to @ tier 9/10 XD
