Aida and Israel are two of the only three students from Ethiopia to be accepted in Columbia University last year. Columbia University is one of the eight Ivy league universities in the United States with the highest ranking in the world. Many big scholars went to the same University including the first black American president Barack Obama. Aida and Israel managed to join this big university with a full ride scholarship straight from Bahirdar and Addis Ababa. And they were kind enough to share the whole journey with us. Their life experience can be directly applied by many Ethiopian students so please share to anyone you might think this information will be valuable to. You ladies are very special. In a country where 97% can’t pass the 12th grade exam, competing among the best in the world for prestigious scholarships and getting it is unbelievable.
Actually you compute with ethiopian students to get in not with the world
No, to get into Columbia or any of the ivy leagues, you compete for limited spot that is available with the world. Some famous Hollywood celebrities went to jail trying to get their kids to selected schools. Columbia acceptance rate is around 4%. I encourage all high school students to carefully listen their advice not let pass this opportunity. And to parents of young girls and boys, be involved, help them be curious and develop good reading habits. But don’t force them and yell, but look other means for them to be excited.

Just like anything else language weakness can be overcome in short time if one work on it. I see mainland Chinese international students which don’t have basic English skills succeed in US colleges. Effort overtime will pay off. Don’t put yourself down and shutdown the opportunity presented to you. Just believe in yourself.
