“People have this desire to know that the world is bigger than them. That there are possibilities out there that go beyond our daily lives. People want to experience magic. They want to experience wonder. They want to feel that anything is possible.” - Mark Kalin, Creative Director, The Illusionists
Magic has been a part of the theatre since the very beginning. The work varies from illusions to stunts to special effects and so much more. Watch as magic makers from The Illusionists - Turn of the Century, Broadway Illusionist Jim Steinmeyer, and members from the production of The Magic Play at The Goodman Theatre share the history and present nature of magic in the theatre.
American Theatre Wing’s Working in the Theatre documentary series features the most fascinating people on the stage, behind the scenes, and in the audience. It’s really fascinating that magician still use old tricks in the 1990’s. How some kind of an illusion that’s presented on stage gives the stage more magical that tells the story with more impression than just a illusion. People know that what they are seeing on stage that’s not real, and they know what’s going on even though they can’t see it and that is why it so fascinating. Magic goes to many changes, that you don’t reveal the secret that you don’t wants they audience knowing to give magic life. Magic can tells you how the story goes and gives lots of amazement.

I like how they still use the same methods and tricks to pull off the illusions. I like the consistency of how magicians attempt to entertain his/her audience, even if the methods are very old.

I like that magic throughout the ages has stayed the same and changed for the better. Magic is one thing that doesn't die out and has been around for hundreds, even thousands, of years.

I loved how there is so much work behind a simple magic effect, I appreciate the amount of work put in for these effects and to teach the history of magic.

I love how they show actual magic tricks in action and then explain how magicians think when doing tricks

I really appreciated the comment of how “great illusions are little stories”. This brought a new way of thinking for me when it comes to illusions and magic as a whole.

I really appreciated how they were able to show how there's so much more work that goes into planning a show than it just being a simple trick.

I love the fact that all magic is an illusion and that anyone can learn it if they put time into it!

I loved this video. It was really fascinating to see magic through time and some of the process that the creators have to go through. Something that I really liked was getting to see how magic was implemented in shows like Aladdin and even Into the Woods.

Very interesting, the type of magic on a large open stage rather than some of the small eye catching handiwork. How the different enviroment of a theater allows for such unique illusions

    FAMILY ...The Wakeling Sawing
The Wakeling SawingThe Wakeling Sawing is an updated version of Selbit's original Sawing Through a Woman. Alan Wakeling has added some unique presentation features to his version of this classic illusion. A complete description of the routine can be found in Jim Steinmeyer's book, The Magic of Alan Wakeling. We are pleased to present our version of this fine illusion. As Alan Wakeling performed this illusion, it was a challenge. Members of the audience assist in securing the assistant and moving the boxes. The assistant is first secured at the head and feet with leather cuffs. Attached to each of these is a long leather leash. Each of these is threaded through a hole at each end of a flat table and held by the spectators throughout the performance. Finely finished oak boxes are placed over the secured assistant. The assistant is visible through doors in the front of each box. These doors are closed and swords and steel blades are pushed through the box. Finally, the spectators pull the two boxes apart from each other. The halves are then placed back together and the boxes removed from the table. The assistant is still in her original secured position, but completely restored.
The Wakeling Sawing closedThe apparatus supplied for this illusion has been designed as a piece of fine furniture. Both dark and natural oak have been used to provide a beautiful and deceptive design. A special stand is also supplied to hold the boxes, swords, and chromed steel blades. The leg braces are made to fold, providing a more efficient method of packing.
    Price $7500.00

I thought it was interesting that magicians thought about what was going on around them and incorporated that into their acts, such as women's suffrage and cutting a woman in half instead of a man.

Sawing a woman in half instead of sawing a man in half is the most oxymoron way to be progressive.
