Caitlin Clark makes more history by being the Player of the Week three consecutive times. She is in the MVP conversation, but what exactly is the WNBA's criteria for MVP?

Pure stats shouldn't be the one and only decider for MVP. Magic Johnson and Nikola Jokic have won the MVP three times each, but didn't lead the NBA in many statistical categories. But their value to their respective teams were immeasurable.

    • @tenderstepsPaul
      @tenderstepsPaul 6 днів тому +1

I agree. Statistics are part of the picture but context is also important, as not everything can be translated into categories and numbers. A player on a team could have very average numbers but help a team enormously to work together. Basketball is a team game. It is a pity that there are so many factors that can promote unnecessary individual play against team play. This is one reason I find Caitlin Clark so wonderful - she wants to promote team play and is not (obviously) looking to break records unlike some basketball "greats". Kobe Bryant, for example, is a fabulous player but, at times, his play was distorted by a desire to break records.

It’s so refreshing to see a young and talented person showing a maturity beyond her years. There’s so many people in the WMBA in both the players, leadership, and media who need to watch her composure and elegance and learn to act with class instead acting like high school mean girls.

Thanks for the genuine conversation on the MVP topic. CC is invaluable to the Fever’s success-impacting their stats, coaching mentality, and financial growth. Beyond that, she's a cornerstone for the WNBA’s image, media deals, merchandise, and raising salaries across the league. Despite facing envy and criticism from the media, veterans, coaches, and retired players, her contributions are undeniable. If the Fever finishes in the top 4 this playoff season, recognizing her should be the easiest decision the league has ever made.

Caitlin Clark is 2024 ROTY & 2024 MVP!
MVP = MOST VALUABLE PLAYER NOT BEST but can be. Caitlin leads the league in TOTAL POINTS PRODUCED, which is the BEST metric that INDICATES the VALUE of a player to her TEAM.
SINCE MID-JUNE, Caitlin & the Fever have been RANKED #1 OFFENSIVE team.
Also, in stats for best player, which can be extended to MVP, is there any way to record the amount of blitzing Caitlin has had to endure this season, which also happens to be her ROOKIE season? How much Caitlin has grown in only 4 months, her ROOKIE season in the wnba, is nothing short of AMAZING. What is an even bigger WONDER is how much, through Caitlin's influence, the Fever Team has IMPROVED!
One more thing to consider for MVP, why is Caitlin #1 on the scouting reports and NOT A'ja? Hmmmmm

Kaitlyn Clark literally changed the speed and style or the Fever’s game. The other Fever players are playing up to the expectations of their management and the fans. Not to mention, WNBA teams can now afford to charter flights to their away games instead of taking the bus. Ticket sales are up. Jersey sales are up. Viewership is up. It seems to me that a lot of the teams seem to be more upbeat and playing harder. The veteran players are up in their game because frankly they’ve been slacking and now they’ve got something to prove. All this is better for the WNBA brand.

    My Thoughts.... MVP
It really comes down to the definition of the Most Valuable Player and is it about the Team they play for OR the overall Benefit to the League....
MVP : The Team .... This is easy to look at; Points, Rebounds, Blocks and Steals... Does the team advance to the Playoffs and how well is their opportunity to WIN!
MVP: The League (WBA) ... This has to be a evaluation to the Player's Impact to the Overall Group of the League in Viewership, Merch Sales and Attendance during Games and Events... We can also look at those that are willing to broker deals for T.V. Times and the Entities that will Advertise on that Network during the course of the Games...
Look if it is about the Team Performance then the selection is EASY... Stats are the Only issue!
But if it is League Impact it comes down to the Money Bottomline, the Viewership and the Opportunities to increase every aspect of REVENUE!!!
Define MVP.... And the VOTE IS CLEAR!!!

It’s not that complicated. Which player, on a top tier team, has demonstrated their worth both offensively and defensively to make the biggest contribution to their teams success.
That’s why Aja and Phee are at the top. Both will be 1st team all W, but also 2st team defense.
If you’re still confused, look at past winners. You don’t see one way players winning the award. So in closing:
    1) They have to be on a top tier team.
    2) They have to have made a significant contribution on offense.
    3) They have to have made a significant contribution on defense.
    See? Simple.

Again, you’re the only person to acknowledge that the lack of documentation for such a position -is the real problem. It opens up to much room for opinion. And I think in the world of politics today, that is precisely why that is. She is the primary reason for the phenomenal growth of the sport in such a short time. She holds Franchise records, Rookie records, WNBA all time records and NBA all time records, in only 33 games as a professional. It is quite obvious to see the Value. It makes more sense to ask who has brought more value to the League and their Team than CC, than should CC be in the conversation. The Fever would not be over .500, they would not be in the playoffs, other players would not be having their best games and seasons, nor would I be here watching. That is VALUE.

If its total league asset value increase for dollars spent (value in the monetary sense - which should not be discounted out of hand - this is how you make millionaires out of the whole league), Caitlin Clark is the all-time MVP of all sports in any season. If it means highly ranked across common and advanced statistics, she is sniffing the top 5-10, but A'ja Wilson is heads and shoulders above the rest of the league in terms of sheer stats and eye-test domination.

--Per the WNBA, MVP "is given to the player who is considered the most important to the team [CC has taken the Fever from .325 in 2023 to .514 in 2024; A'ja has taken the Aces from .850 in 2023 to .639 in 2024], sport, or game." CC has brought millions of new fans to the "sport or game" of women's basketball, and is on the cusp of taking the WNBA from money-losing irrelevance to a profitable league. CC is the clear winner.
"The MVP debate often centers around the following factors: statistics, team performance, and whether the player is making the greatest difference on the team." There is room to debate Statistics (as you do at 11:48) but A'ja hasn't broken nearly as many records as CC has. So A'ja is a great player but CC is the best player ever in a bunch of categories. Also, there is context. While her absolute rebound and block numbers are lower than A'ja's, CC gets more rebounds and blocks (A'ja's job) than any guard, but A'ja does not get more assists (CC's job) than any other center/forward.
Regarding "team performance" and "making the greatest difference on the team," see above. CC is the clear winner.
--As you note at 14:25, the Aces score more with A'ja on the bench and the Fever score less with CC on the bench. (Remember all that "most important to the team" and "makes the greatest difference to the team" stuff?) CC is the clear winner.
The league offers very little in the way of evaluative criteria for MVP, but the only way A'ja fits the criteria over CC is if you look only at points and rebounds and ignore everything else the league has said should be considered for MVP.
And just a note, in 2024, A'ja has also won POTW 3 times in a row as well as POTM 3 times in a row.

122 (58.1%) of Clark's 210 made shots happened more than 10 feet from the rim.
Centers get most of the pts from passes and playing within 10 feet of the rim vs Guards who play to the outside.,
Avg 27 Pts a game is impressive, but what else has Wilson done?
    ....
Clark after just 10 games, 150 points, 50 rebounds and 50 assists (tied)
Clark after just 15 games, 200 points, 75 rebounds and 75 assists (fastest)
Clark after just 19 games, 300 points, 100 rebounds and 100 assists (fastest)
Clark after just 24 games, 400 points, 100 rebounds and 150 assists, (fastest) because NO ROOKIE in League history has ever achieved those statistical tallies, even over a full season.
    ....
Clark after 36 games, is now sitting at 692 Pts, 306 AST and 209 rebounds in League history NO ROOKIE even over a full season has never achieved those statistical tallies.

The league doesn’t want to give all the recognition to one person! They want to spread it around thinking it would be best to promote the entire league. It’s not right

Point contribution (Pts + asts) should be the criteria as pts + rebs are not the same as pts + asts!

Who cares? If you thought she was a conservative then you were not paying attention.
So long as she is still measured in her words, I could care less. Most women are liberal - even the conservative women. (See Liz Cheney, Nikki Haley, etc).

The media machine crowned A’ja MVP before the season started. They already had their narrative based on previous years. The media wanted it to be unanimous this time but its not.

After tonight's game, CC will have to get a triple-double and beat the Aces convincingly next game. Jut saying....

In a rational world, CC would be hands-down the MVP at this point.
But as noted, we're dealing with egos, friends and sycophants, politics, etc., etc., so she probably won't get it. No sweat, eventually she will get it.

The WNVA should use the standards to be considered for MVP already in used by the NBA.

Aja is great but she now came second to CC. #iiwii. CC is most valuable to everyone, not just a player per se.
Since politics is very obvious, it'll be best to give all the flowers due to CC22 "Real Deal". And protect her too unless she gets awfully injured or maybe transfer to a different league that's more professional.#ROTY #MVP #WNBA #ESPN

I have a few thoughts on this issue, Let me start by saying if the award is for the best player in the league I have no problem agreeing with the choice of Aja Wilson. I do however believe that no one in their right mind can possibly believe that anyone has brought more value (Both financial and public interest) to her team and the WNBA as a whole this year than Caitlin Clark. If they want to give an award to someone that is chosen as the best player the league that is fine, I think that should definately be done, but it should not be called Most Valuable Player, because I think there are a lot of instances when the best player is not the most valuable player and I feel they both deserve recognition.
