No Kidding, my childhood started at age 58, thru my teenage years and thru my adult life I always kicked myself for not learning guitar, I always had one but easily became discouraged and put it down, at age 58 I made a promise to myself I didn’t care how bad or how much I wanted to set it down I would make myself learn something every day, that was 4 years ago and it’s still not great it gets a little better each time, I’ve learned finger style and the scales, chords and now trying to learn chord tones, arpeggios, and triads! Sorry that long winded.
I appreciate how well this man clearly articulates himself in such a natural straightforward way. I'm often surprised when I hear some brilliant musicians struggle so much to put their ideas into words. That's why a great teacher is so rare, even more rare than a brilliant player.
Howard taught me (personally) so much about moving lines and substitutions. It really improved my playing and arrangements. Wish he was still around to see and hear some of the arrangements I've put together since. Miss you, friend.
i cant repay what you've just taught me recently. love that cap.God bless. nowhere have i found this kinda teaching in my entire learning career. What a Great teacher.
What an incredibly pleasant man! Not to mention the vast knowledge he's shared just in this lesson alone. Knowing he's gone saddens me yet, to seek out what he has left behind is the goal.
His enthusiasm is amazing, and he's got something in every video that put's a different spin on what other's try to teach. I've been watching it on truefire for about 2 weeks.
I absolutely love how evident its made that one must actually apply this to a guitar with those pauses. Got every single chord right. You sir, are a fantastic teacher. Thank you
This man here is all about music. Music is oozing out in every mannerism of his... and what a great teacher, The enthusiasm coupled with the quirky passionate musical anecdotes... what I am trying to say is this is an amazing lesson by an amazing human being! Thank you!
Howard had written books on 7-string jazz guitar and finger-style jazz guitar when I studied with him back in 1969. He also wrote columns in several guitar magazines.
I wish I saw this video 10 years ago. Oh wait it was uploaded only 6 years ago. Best video on chords I've seen. Brilliant teacher. Intermediate concept explained beginner style.
You sir have taught me in just a few minutes what I've been struggling to understand for longer than I care to admit!! Absolutely fantastic teacher!. Wish I had known this years ago but I've got it now so I'm gonna practice it immediately and I'm a new subscriber! Thank you.
Wow! What a wonderful teacher you are! You are a great teacher. You lessons are very helpful and the way you explain it is very understandable. Be blessed
I took lessons from Howard back in 1969. If you're interested, two of the books I used are: Mel Bay Presents Jazz Guitar Method by Ronny Lee, Vol 2, which covers all the chords Howard is presenting here. This book is one of the best I've seen for jazz chords. Sal Salvador Single String Studies, edited by Bob Grillo. There are much better scale and technique-building books available now, but this is one I've used.
Howard you're a star. I don't think this video is for the beginner... based upon this, I'd say for an intermediate player... but I love your passion and the way you put things across in ways that we can all engage with. I've picked much of this content up by learning patterns over the years, but you bring deeper meaning and life to it. I wish I'd come across your tutorials twenty years ago...
Peter Marshall So sorry to hear that Howard 'passed' some years ago, but his teachings are incredible. Armed with a chart of the 'Circle of Fifths' in one hand and this video in the other, any budding guitarist has everything he will ever need to know. After that, all that's required is inspiration. This video is priceless.
+Peter Marshall Sad that people have to pass away> Yes, this guy is a great teacher. I also luck that I started to learn only three months ago but used my mathematical thinking to discover that you only need to know the ONE major scale position (one box only), to be able to walk a scale through the whole boar, and since I discovered this last week I do it everyday. It is just like meditation. I am a very bad teacher and there is no way I can explain how I do it. What do you think of my future as a hobby guitarist/singer? I am 47 and just started all this early this year.
Lucky enough to have had lessons with the man years ago. Blind (almost) and in his early 80's he had more energy than I did at half his age...! He taught these concepts from the RONNIE LEE JAZZ GUITAR METHOD BOOK, BOOK 2. I think it's still available through Mel Bay but books 1 and 2 come in a single package. I still have mine and refer to it constantly. The TrueFire lesson this is taken from, except for song analysis he added, is very close to what he did live. Miss the man...
I posted above. I also took lessons from Howard in 1969. Did he still have the photo wall when you were taking lessons? I would run into Howard's students in Manny's and other music stores on W 48th St. and we would recognize each other from the photos on Howard's wall.
Wow, I have understood more in this single lesson episode than from all of my other similar tapes! Thanks so much for this engaging, informative and clear teaching of a subject I love, and, NEED to in order to play more challenging material. You're the best!
Wow , maybe I was just ready for the information , or you are an awesome teacher ! I think the mark of a good teacher is consistency, and being positively sure of everything you are saying , so that a student has no chance of doubt in his mind. Thank you so much for posting this video .
Great, teaching in this fashion is "the way" to make people use their grey cells and at last understand the principles of chord theory, indeed there's no way beating round the bush,do it well or don't do it at all. What I like about Guitar is it demands everything from you, no halfheartedness here, great Teaching, the best for understanding harmony. Victor (jazzguts)
John Burkhardt, that might have been around the time I took his course Fretboard Harmony at the Guitar Study Center in New York. I think I lasted for three sessions before I ran screaming out of the course. Terrific guy; enfles knowledge.
Joe Pass also suggested having the guitar on you while watching t.v. Must be a secret of the greats. Also, Maj7 to Maj6 is a staple of the Mickey Baker books. This is some old school foundation right here.
I being doing those to play keyboard chords, just messing on that cuz i play guitar/Bass as main instrument XD, never knew i could do same to guitar. Great teacher, opened my mind.
i learnt so much in this one video .. I first saw this 2 years ago couldnt make sense ....of it all....now after studying the guitar It all makes perfect sense and taught me some very sweet chord progressions. ...I was sad to read one of the coments saying Howard was no longer with us .. I have to say if this is true then he left behind a great legacy. ..Thank you Howard where ever you may be.. You are a great teacher
+jckaok Wow, you guys are lucky. So you had a guitar 40 years ago? I am 47 and he first time I touched a guitar was three months ago. I am from rural Africa, and now I am in the UK.
this was a great lesson. covered a lot of chords in a small area on the neck. very helpful with figuring out where all the 7th intervals are within easy grasp. very practical. also, gonna start watching the Sopranos while i practice. :D
I needed this 50 years ago.Never too late to have a happy childhood.

This course is Howards legacy in teaching terms. I bought it a few years ago. It is excellent. Rip Howard Morgen.
i cant repay what you've just taught me recently. love that cap.God bless. nowhere have i found this kinda teaching in my entire learning career.
What a Great teacher.
I've watched this video several times and come out with something new everytime
Love that guy ! He doesn't become boring even if he goes deeper in theory. More UA-cam teachers should take notes from this man! Great lesson!

I love Howard. we talked about 15 years ago. he was a very humble man. I've learned a lot from him 35 years ago while I took guitar lessons.
Howard is the humble Master. Great educator and world class player. I own this course. Highly recommended.
I absolutely love how evident its made that one must actually apply this to a guitar with those pauses. Got every single chord right. You sir, are a fantastic teacher. Thank you

Teaching is an artform. This guy is a master!
One of my favorite lessons by an all time great teacher

Now this is finally one comprehensible method in teaching chord construction, glad I found in here.

Great lesson. Thanks a lot. That guitar looks exactly like my Eastman AR403CE-SB, a gorgeous archtop electric hollowbody.
what a fantastic heavy/ heady video. thank you
I studied with this guy in 1985-86. Hew was also teaching Paul Simon at the time.
John Burkhardt, that might have been around the time I took his course Fretboard Harmony at the Guitar Study Center in New York. I think I lasted for three sessions before I ran screaming out of the course. Terrific guy; enfles knowledge.
Very good points about construction vs. voicing!
Wish I had a teacher like that when I started out.
May he rest in peace . A lovely guy with much knowledge and a friendly way of sharing it .
+Elvin Lategan I wouldnt want such a talented person to be resting. It would be boring to him. He should re-incarnate and keep playing music.
Very, very nice!!!
Joe Pass also suggested having the guitar on you while watching t.v. Must be a secret of the greats. Also, Maj7 to Maj6 is a staple of the Mickey Baker books. This is some old school foundation right here.

This guy is a guitar sage... Most guys on UA-cam skip theory because they don't know it...
+Tony Kelch theory is very necessary
Very helpful Thank you.
I wish I'd seen this video forty years ago.
+jckaok Wow, you guys are lucky. So you had a guitar 40 years ago? I am 47 and he first time I touched a guitar was three months ago. I am from rural Africa, and now I am in the UK.
What guitar is that?
That was the best lesson I've ever seen
this was a great lesson. covered a lot of chords in a small area on the neck. very helpful with figuring out where all the 7th intervals are within easy grasp. very practical. also, gonna start watching the Sopranos while i practice. :D
