The main complaint that tourists and visitors to our country is that the price of accommodation is excessive. A lot of hotels throughout the country no longer operate as hotels. Even Irish people find it cheaper to fly to Spain or Portugal for a week than stay for a weekend in an Irish hotel.

    • @travelwithevora

Hi Nicole, lucky the weather was not so wet. As mentioned several times in the comments if no one is available at a campsite they just rely on you setting up camp and getting payment from you when they return or before you leave. It’s like this in a lot of countries. But you can’t beat camping wild where possible, saves you a lot of money.

    • @travelwithevora
      @travelwithevora  Місяць тому +1

Hi Shaun, I have to admit I prefer to call to the owner at least 😅 to know where to pitch the tent, even if no one shows up until the next day but I'll know it next time. That's true, I did it a few times but not in Ireland.

Yes, it's the food capital of Ireland so restaurants and cafes in Kinsale were more expensive than elsewhere. Actually I think it's overrated when you consider other places in West Cork like Bantry, Glengarriff and the Beara Peninsula. I would advise tourists to ride/drive further west.

Kinsale is home to the trendy sailing crowd, and as a result boasts lots of excellent restaurants but is therefore really expensive. The Irish Riviera! Not the place I would be able to afford to stay overnight.

The price of accomodation in Ireland is extortionate. Even for Irish people. It’s cheaper to just get a cheap flight abroad.

While it's fun to wing it on any kind of trip you do make things much harder for yourself. Even some minor preplanning would have saved you so much time. If you had done a check on prices etc before your trip you would have less reason to complain. Prices are very high in Ireland and if you are on a budget you should have planned a bit better. Accommodation is notoriously expensive in Ireland. I'm surprised you didn't check out couch surfing or other cheap options. You could also have done house sitting. Or stayed in one place for a few nights and get a discount and take day trips. It's interesting you haven't complained about the cost of fuel so that's good! I can't believe the number of camp sites etc you tried to stay at and no-one had the courtesy to take your call. This at a time when when many in the tourism business in Ireland are whining and complaining and complaining about VAT rates etc. Please report these sites to the local tourist authority. If they have a license to run a camp site it should be revoked. Many supermarkets have delis . Pubs have toilets and electricity and many times good food! And please check the weather on your proposed route every morning. While Irish weather is notoriously fickle, you should get a fair idea of what it's going to be like for then next 24 hours. While it seems your goal is to just drive the WWW - you sure are missing out on some wonderful places along the way. Kinsale is a lovely town (yes expensive, it is the "gourmet capital" of Ireland as I am sure you know!) but it would have been a good place to splurge on some fabulous food. You missed out on a visit to Charles Fort. Again, if you'd checked Galley Head you would have found out that the lighthouse is rental property. If you had checked out the Ireland walking trails you could have gotten information on walking and hiking in Ireland. You could also check out student accommodation which is rented out during the summer at the Universities. Hope some of this helps!

Thanks for the advice, it's a pity that my words are taken as if I were complaining about the prices. That is not the case. I think I am communicating clearly what the purpose of this trip is and how I am travelling. I have no interest in setting myself a fixed destination, then I wouldn't have been able to do some of the things I did, simply because I ‘have to be at the accommodation on time’.
I wanted to do this trip to prepare for a trip around the world next year. Facing minimal problems and finding solutions to them is one of the things I'm happy to take on.
In addition, I want to show that you can travel on a limited budget - this is not a 2 week trip but a trip over half a year. If you are happy to spend 100 euros to sleep, you can do that - it's simply not worth it to me. The same goes for eating out - I want to explore countries and not just eat - I've eaten out from time to time but it doesn't have to be every day. I save where I can - and petrol is not one of the things you can save on, nor is the maintenance of my bike.
It's nice that you are aware of all this, before I came to Ireland I had never experienced such areas of land being privately owned. That doesn't happen in other countries. So what should I have been looking for? What could I have googled?
I did my research on the visit to Ireland, I set myself goals and I had a great time. Did I see every centimetre? Of course not, then I would have to stay in Ireland for 2 years. Why always focus on what you didn't see instead of what you did see? It was my first visit to Ireland (my first long solo trip) - did I make mistakes with the routing? For sure ..but that doesn't minimise the experience. And now I'm finding out about places I haven't seen, which I can save for next time. I've missed far more in other countries - but at some point you have to move on.
Btw. Hiking is not easy when you have to leave all your luggage open on a motorbike. I do it from time to time but it's not a hiking holiday.
PS: I don't report someone to whatever authorities because they don't answer the phone. They're also just people who maybe had something more important to do.

@@shanemurphy1246 thanks 😊 that's actually not necessary, not even recommended for newer bikes or cars. The oil pressure is immediately available and the viscosity is not as high as it used to be. In addition, the warm-up phase is reduced when driving, which is better for the engine.

It's December, the season is officially over in Ireland. Those involved in tourism are working other jobs or have gone on holiday, we don't get enough through traffic - being a small island - to justify all accommodations remaining open. Of course hotels are open. Anyway I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay 👍🏻☘️

You seem to like narrow country roads. In Ireland you will get nice, but not an even standard of professionalism as evidenced by your camping experiences. Also "returning calls" in Ireland, even for business purposes, is considered an optional extra. As for B&Bs, they can be more expensive and less welcoming than budget hotels. Safe travels and enjoy.

Some call back? I'm in shock😊. I like travelling around Ireland, but food and accommodation prices are beyond funny. A lucky find is a B&B under €50. The norm in high price Ireland is €70 plus. So that leaves camp sites, which remain affordable. I am a frequent work traveller to Scandinavia, especially Finland. I can stay in a very nice hotel, centre of Helsinki for €65. Same standard hotel in Ireland is probably €130 or more if in Dublin. If it's any consolation, Irish people are tired of the high prices too. And saying more about tourist costs in Ireland will only depress you, I am stopping here😊. May your travels be safe, the wind be always at your back and the sun shine as you bike across Ireland. Best wishes.
