I was advised against joining the Queens own Highlanders by the recruiting officer because my brother was the depot sergeant at the time.
I didn’t want to join any other regiment as all the men in my family had served in both world wars and in peacetime in either the Camerons or Seaforths - and both when they amalgamated in 1961 to form the Queens Own - so I never got to serve.

    • @AirplaneDoctor_

That has to be one of the poorest reasons for not joining up I've seen flogged off, your story makes no sense at all. It was and is, extremely common for brothers, even dads and sons to serve in the same regiment concurrently even with one holding higher rank or position. In the QOHIGHRS there were loads of family serving together, even now in the Highlanders it is a regular thing, the PM and DM are even brothers.

How does marching down the streets of Scotland or anywhere else for that matter over & over again especially at night prove. There’s more important things to be getting on with in life, instead of watching the same spectacle so many times. Plus in what way is it benefiting you.
