I’m glad you reacted to this one, their most underrated album for sure. Alec Eiffel is probably my favorite Pixie’s song.... and Bird Dreams of the Olympus Mons, Letters to Memphis, and Motorway to Roswell might be the three prettiest songs they ever wrote. Great album.

Very nice review! _Trompe Le Monde_ tends to be more of a grower, but you can definitely feel the power of it very quickly. It has some great gems for sure.
Great job with these very interesting classic Pixies reviews. That is, indeed, all the studio albums for that era. However, if you haven't heard them yet, and are still reluctant (as I am) to be done with this era, there is a solution. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complete_%27B%27_Sides
I'd personally feel that this Pixies experience isn't quite complete without them, and I'd love to hear any of your thoughts on the single b-sides. Anything from your first impression opinion to whether you think they fit more with their b-side status or if they should have been on the respective album of the time.
Thanks again for sharing all this with us!

Oh, and I really need to mention - You should definitely check out the work of PJ Harvey, if you are not familiar with it already- especially the albums "Rid of Me," "Is this Desire?" and "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea."
She is the only two-time Mercury Music Prize, I believe, and she also dueted with Nick Cave on the track "Henry Lee" on his "Murder Ballads" album and their relationship ending was a major inspiration behind his album "The Boatman's Call"

Please review the new albums! One of them is VERY GOOD. I strongly recommend listening in order. Also, if you can find it, the *vinyl* release for Head Carrier has a slightly better master. That album was butchered in the master, sadly. Indie Cindy and BTE both have nice production, but very different, and Indie Cindy especially is highly polarizing (the controversy over its sound is what led to Head Carrier being badly produced). Also, BTE includes 9 bonus tracks. These bonus tracks are like a 4th album -- they are finished studio versions, despite being called "demos." These are a must listen.
I also recommend that you review the Mother Mother albums! Did you know that Mother Mother's favorite band is Pixies? They cover Gouge Away and Cactus during their live shows. Enjoy!

I dont know if you reviewed Frank Black but I find this last Pixies album transitions right into what he wrote in his solo albums. The guitars and the story telling aspects in the lyrics, and his vocal stylings.

Trompe is Pixies Meet Metal. Two reasons why this is true. 1) The album cover features a wing coming off the P. And 2) I read an interview with Charles in which he admitted is was a metal album. Pixies-style metal.

hey great stuff. keep checking out their stuff there is much to enjoy. as others have said, the best progression from here is a record called The Complete B Sides, which will fill you in on the key songs and audience favorites from the classic years which weren't released on the albums. A song called Into the White, with Kim on lead vocal is among their very best, and there are lots of great tracks there. Then continue into the early solo/side projects. The first two Breeders records, The Pod and Last Splash, are quintessential Kim Deal. And Black Francis / Frank Black's first two solo projects are very worthy (especially the second one, Teenager of the Year). I would do all of that, and maybe some of their other projects (I am very fond of some of Kim's other records especially), before hitting any of the new-era Pixies material.

So, you HAVEN'T listened to The Breeders' 'Last Splash?' You're right about Kim; the ethereal sweetness of her voice (particularly in counterpoint to Charles's vocal athletics) is unmatched. It almost makes you wish that she had a twin sister with whom she formed a band ...

A beautiful record. Motorway to Roswell is one of their finest. By the by, the wing on P is a clue to the fact that Charles wanted to make a 'Pixies does metal' record. And he succeeded.
They are definitely Francis' aka Charles' screams. And I have no doubt that he had some anger going on. The band was coming apart. Kim had made Pod and it was great, she was drifting away, she was drinking and she was the fans' goddess. Kim was underutilized on Bossanova and Trompe, and much of that had to do with Charles' control and resentment.

Pixies and Throwing Muses were my favorite bands for most of the 90s. But now, Modest Mouse blows everything away from that period. You're right; Trompe did sound angry compared to the earlier albums. I like the later releases and I have to wonder how Beneath the Eyrie would rank if it had been released 30 years ago.
