In '84 I hiked the whole thing and decided somewhere in the middle to follow a stream w/ huge boulders to the cliffs where I'd camp overnight. Almost descended to free dive but feared the current. Anyway, on next day decided to get back to the trail by going across the face of a large rounded cliff hundreds of feet above the shore. Half way across I realized it was a shale face w/ just little shrubs growing here and there. I thought, this is it... no way I'm gonna make it but I stayed low (w/ backpack on) and grabbed every tiny plant I could. It's still my most chilling memory.

Thank you for this really helpful and fun video. A number of years ago I hiked the Kalalau Trail with some friends at the end of the rainy season- end of May- during the 11 mile - hike which we did in one day, it continuously rained. We wore shoes with the toes singled out and velcro on the bottom which did help with all the slippery rocks etc. . A few things that happened: 1) one guy's backpack was ripped away by the current as we crossed a river- we only had a thin line to hold on to as we jumped from rock to rock. 2) Due to the constant rain and mud slides we lost our trail temporarily and had to carry one friend down the mountain who didn't have the strength to go on anymore 3) we weren't able to put up our tents in the caves once we got to the beach destination and slept in the caves. 4) the rats in the cave ate our trail mix (make sure you have food in containers that rats can't open). 5) a goat crashed off the mountain and died in front of us. 6) the next day was sunny and I went swimming and got into a rip tide which was starting to pull me out into the sea past the island. By a miracle I was able to reach land!!! thanks for mentioning the dangerous waters. Our friend who had been too weak to go on was getting picked up by a boat but the currents were too strong so the boat couldn't get to the beach and the friend had to swim out to the boat. He also almost drowned!!! Maybe end of raining season is not the best time!

I'm from Kaua'i & I'd avoid swimming at Hanakapi'ai beach. It's about two miles into the hike but the beach is regarded as one of the most dangerous beaches in the world. Our boy scout troop witnessed a retired pilot drown while his kids looked on because there was nothing that they could do. Two of us ran out for help but it was too late. The worse thing in the water is a person's own inexperience. Aloha to his family.
That’s very sad! I’m sorry to hear that. We didn’t actually go swimming at all while we were hiking along this coast line. The current looked way to strong and we had heard stories of many people being pulled out into the ocean.
There is a long shore current that pulls parallel to the beach/cliffs, so once you get pulled past the beach you are gonzo. Miles of cliffs impossible to get up with large swells for a lot of the year.
Yup, the biggest danger in Hawaii, thinking the ocean is fun. Respect it at all times, never turn your back on it, and if in doubt Stay the F out.
Great memories watching your video! June 2013, wasn’t in shape to hike, therefore, boated in. Boat guy explained the history along the way! Went into 2 sea caves…now that’s a story! Camped 32 days in the valley. Lived on kauai for 18 months but this was by far the greatest adventure! Hiked out, heart in my throat due to the heights and the narrow paths along the way! At 57 yrs old and not in the best shape to do it? I kissed the ground at the end of the trail and was so welcomed by the rosters/chickens!! It was magical, the whole experience…I’ll never forget it…

Girlfriend and I planned our trip around this hike. The conditions were not perfect so the trail was slippery and the waves were high. We only made it a few miles in before a few cliff-side tight spots in the trail combined my fear of heights to force us to turn around. It was very disappointing to turn back but that trail is no joke. I'm so jealous of you guys!

We made it all the way through & back but there was one area where the trail was completely washed away. We just had to make our own trail. We were younger then because we'd never do that again! You made the right decision & lived to see another day.

Just finished it yesterday took 1day had to rest..at 6mil..But it was so beautiful and well worth it..stayed 3nights in...only took 5hr to hike Back out it was Amazing and such a powerful and good vibe..Injoy and be safe be sure to pack your Rubbish 🗑 back out when you leave Mahalo....
Went to the 6-mile mark in 05. But needed to turn around before the sunlight was gone since we didn't pack for overnight. It also was wintertime, so less sunlight was available.
Would recommend staying the night!

sorry me and my husband are planning to go in 2 weeks. is it possible to do the hike on way in one day? and how long did you guys take for the 6 miles?
@@travelbucketliss327 doing it in one day would be a lot! There are many people that do it in one day if you are very fit. We camped halfway on the first day and hiked out on the third day.
Back in 2002, I got 2 miles done in 2 hrs and turned around. Got some lovely wave pictures at the first beach. Yeah, I KNEW some probably wiped out on that trail - IT FELT deadly. Thanks for showing me all the reasons why I did the right thing - turn around after 2 miles! LOL

When my friends visit the islands I always recommend them bringing an umbrella & a light jacket. Kaua'i remains as one of the wettest places in the world & it could get a little chilly in the evenings. For the Kalalau Trail bring good hiking boots, good/extra socks, rain poncho, floppy brimmed hat, small personalized IFAK (blisters, scrapes & sprains), hand sanitizer, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, toilet tissue, trowel, trail snacks, ample water supply & a water filter. Don't drink out of the streams without treating the water or boiling it. If you're gonna camp overnight bring a good ground pad, bedroll, headlamp, short machete, hiking camp stove w/ fuel, butane lighter[s], food (you choose) & a power bank for your phone. I combined my poncho with a friend's poncho & formed a tent for two otherwise a lean-to would've been fine for just me. If you gotta have a tent then you hump it in. Over seven miles in we came across a mountain apple orchard & I hope it's still there. Eat the apples. Keep it simple, avoid swimming there & be careful. Happy Trails!

I did this 3 weeks ago, if you doubt your footing and get scared of heights do this in the summer season so mud doesn't contribute to the risk factor. Red hill in the mud was absolute madness.

Very helpful. Cold at night. Crawler's Ledge dangerous part is short. Constant helicopters. Caution crossing streams, waiting it out if necessary. Good stuff.

Nice video! Some important tips there. Thanks for sharing. So quick question...I saw signs ppl posted that you can't fly drones there. I've seen some clips on here. Honestly do you think it'll be ok to fly a little here and there?
I would say they are posted bc there is so much helicopter traffic there and sadly common sense isn’t as common as it used to be. If you were to put yours up making sure no helicopters were present and have it back down or close when one did come you’d be ok.

this looks so beautiful and intense at the same time. I'm not sure if i'd do it myself as someone who is from Fiji, when it begins to rain on this kind of terrain its can be a recipe for disaster

I love this trail so much! I only hiked a little bit of it and I thought it definitely can be dangerous. It's started raining during our hike and there were moments where we were slipping down the mountain when we went back down.
The rain can definitely make it much more dangerous, good weather is essential!

@@madetoexplore Hmmmmm? Maybe it's because I'm Chinese? I've never experienced any issues! Once, we were in a Crazy Shirts Store and bought a shirt with a picture of the State Fish on it. I asked the Sales Gal and she took the time to show me how Humuhumua'pu'a'a is pronounced!

How’d you guys fare in the “Valley of Fire Ants”? That’s what I call a portion of trail that meandered underneath the lush forest canopy, where red ants scurried along the shady path and avoided the sunlight. We couldn’t stop on that area of the trail for longer than two seconds before the ants started climbing on our ankles/legs and started biting! 🐜
Can’t say I recall seeing ants on the trail! Lol Must have been a different time of year because when we went, the trail was quite wet.
I would love to see more of the area and less talking or maybe talking while showing the scenic shots? Beautiful video though

NO IT IS NOT!
Hawaii makes me angry when it comes to these sort of things! I lived in Hawaii nearly 10 years, and I know it is just the way they are, sleepy un-tooned to things and unimaginative. THAT TRAIL SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN! It's ridiculous and murderous to let people do it. There also are a few very dangerous waterfalls they just let people go to around the island. And by the way, it is not advisable to camp out anywhere in Hawaii late at night if you are not well acquainted with locals and the local population. There are some real ass holes and mean people in Hawaii.
There's this whole "fear of locals" by newcomers, and by the same token "local intimidation of newcomers where locals hate their practical and innovative European mentality", and that has Hawaii completely stiffled and paralyzed in so many ways.
They simply need to open up the West Coast, complete the loop by connecting Waimea to Haena and make good and safe walking trails that lead down to these beaches so that everyone can enjoy them. OH BUT NO! DON'T TOUCH THE LAVA! PELE 'S GONNA CURSE YOU! DON'T DISRESPECT THE LOCALS! Such bullshit! It's actually the other way around, whites live in a state of constant offense by locals in Hawaii. They're totally backwards and ignorantly hostile towards anything that is proposed by "haole" (white people), and yet they let huge hotel chains hog up vast swaths of some of Hawaii's best shorelines, making it extremely uncomfortable and testy to access them. See, locals find it easy to bully and intimidate individuals and good people that peacefully live with them, but have not balls when it comes to confronting wealthy corporations.
The shores of the world need to be PUBLIC! Locals in Hawaii are so corrupt, and then yet they grab certain choice spots for themselves while throwing hateful looks at you if you dare try to get near them, or worse! ... OHHHH YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW! Hawaii is the most racially socially hatefully segregated place in the United States, and it's all kept quiet and completely silenced. White people who live there will shun you if you even dare try mention it, while Locals laugh at it because they know it's true. ... AND YES, you guys (@ Chris Duncan ) DID put your lives at risk because of what this social condition results in. That path is a ticking time-bomb, and sadly not until there is a real bad tragedy where several people die in one day, like a whole group falling off or something, no one will raise their voice for something to be done. Because Locals are resentful of all outsider new residents white people and visitors, and "white people" are scared to do or say anything to fix or make bad situations better.
I'm sorry you went ahead and did it, your girl friend could have easily slipped into the abyss, I was mortified just watching it. Wendy S. King is right. You should have never taken that risk.
Wow. It sounds like you needed a place to vent (I guess🤷🏼♀️) so I hope you feel better getting that all off your chest. It’s unfortunate that you feel that way, however that was not our experience whatsoever.
We felt very safe and welcomed by the local people while camping and traveling around, and we also felt safe proceeding with this hike due to our experience, the conditions at the time of our hike and our comfort level.
Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion so I’m going to stop there, but I (Cayleigh, his girlfriend🙃) am still incredibly glad we did this hike, it was an amazing, once in a lifetime experience for us. Take care.

May I ask why you think this? To me from an outsider’s perspective they seem to be in shape, dressed correctly and didn’t try to get into the water. That would be the 3 main things I would assume get people in trouble besides freak accidents. What else could they do or what weren’t they doing correctly?
