Operator is a region / a sequence present near the promoter region where the repressor attaches or binds to,whereas the term 'OPERON' refers to an arrangement where a polycistronic gene (ie) a a structural gene unit with many genes and one common promotor is present along with some regulatory genes also. Here, the lac operon consists of the lac operator and the lac repressor (ie) the repressor protein and also the i gene which is the regulatory gene.

Sir, Please can you explain why we are calling lac operon regulation by repressor as negative regulation. Please Please Sir ❤️❤️
Here, the repressor acts negatively to aid in regulating the expression of the gene beta-galactosidase (ie) it binds with the operator gene and switches off the operon preventing any gene (z, y, a genes) to be produced that helps in the digestion of lactose, in the absence of it.
As the bacteria doesn't want the enzyme Beta-galactosidase, if Lactose is not available for it in it's surroundings.... Then this regulation of gene expression is useful
