In this video, I’m comparing One Day by David Nicholls across three adaptations: the book, the movie, and the new Netflix series. I read the book a few years ago, and while I didn’t love it-it was pretty dense and hard to get through-I did appreciate the story of Emma and Dexter, who meet on graduation day in 1988 and we follow them once a year over the next 20+ years. It’s all about love, friendship, and figuring out life, though their relationship is complicated by poor communication.
The 2011 movie, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, does a decent job of capturing the essence of the book, but it can’t cover everything. Personally, I’d recommend watching the movie over reading the book if you’re short on time. But then, in 2024, Netflix dropped a 14-episode series that takes things to a whole new level. I binge-watched it in two days, and while I loved it, the emotional rollercoaster wrecked me-I literally got a headache from crying so much!
The series wins for me-it’s more faithful to the book and has better diversity in its casting, which I really appreciated. Plus, I was more invested in the characters. My only gripe is Dexter’s hair-it's always way too neat and sleek. I get it, but it just didn’t feel right for his character at times.
So, while I think the series is the best adaptation, I do wonder if we needed all three versions-book, movie, and series. But if you’re into emotional stories, definitely give the series a try. Just be prepared to cry… a lot. Let me know if you’ve read the book or watched any adaptations-just don’t cry about it, okay? I can’t take any more tears!
