That "Daddy" song hits me a little bit because, in almost every case of a woman abusing a child, the woman gets away with it way too easily, not to mention the people saying they're "lucky" or "I wish that was me" like bruh, abuse is abuse.
Daddy by Korn is easily the most disturbing song I've ever heard. The fact that it stems from such a real place in Jonathan's life is disturbing already, but to hear his raw emotional breakdown is downright terrifying. I have a huge respect for Korn and Jonathan Davis because of how far they're willing to push things each album.

My mother and I loved Alice In Chains.. she suffered many years with a heroin addiction and so did I. She overdosed and I felt her die in my arms. Paramedics revived her but I knew it had been too long. Doctors told me she had no brain activity and it was time to take her off of support. I did her makeup and played Nutshell for us… then I said goodbye to my mother in the same hospital that she gave birth to me in.
I am crying so hard... I almost can't breathe. I love Alice in Chains... And I passed my love along to my son... Along with my drug addiction too. Thank God he and I have both survived. I have 9ys and he has 1yr... It's not easy and I damn near lost my only child last year. But for the grace of God he is with me today. I so hope you are ok. Your story touched my heart and broke it too. God bless You and keep you safe until you are reunited with your mama again ❤❤❤
The Korn one is so sad, because a lot of male victims STILL aren't believed to this day. The double standard and bias of SA victims/abusers is horrible, and I really hope that one day male victims can get the justice they deserve from their abusers. I've literally found some comments down here saying that men and women both get the same treatment, which is just ignorance. Here's to hoping things get better one day
Yeah I remember seeing a British kid get SA'd, the woman said she tought he was 16, and then got off scott-free. No jail time, no community service, and not even a 0.01 fined.
I used to help people dealing with what could have been their last moments alive. A majority were males that weren't being believed or just plain ignored for what happened to them when they were younger. As someone that had to deal with that for years and my own father just ignoring it and even blaming me it really upset me. Thankfully those guys are still alive and are in a much better place now having received the help they seriously needed and knowing they were truly believed in and that we were taking what they said seriously. With very serious reprocussions to their assaulters. I just wish my assaulter was behind bars too.
I was litterally at a Korn concert YESTERDAY and that song was an intro before the smaller bands and I felt like I was the only one who knew what it meant and everyone else was just enjoying the song :/
I do agree with this and males should also be believed but women are also no believed in some cases, my mom was SA in college and the dudge got away scott free because she knew that cases like this would pit people against her nd she didnt have the funds. Everyone should be treated fairly and i hope the Jhonny Depp case brings things like this to light.
Daddy by KoRn is a tough listen for sure, especially how you can hear the pain in Johnathan’s voice when singing about it..and when he has that breakdown while the rest of the band continues to play the melody of the song is just…wow….that’s just insane

Daddy still has me SOBBING. Korns music is usually pretty dark. Talking about feeling crazy, suicidal and depressed. Daddy was the most hurtful thing I've heard from them, and hearing Johnathan scream and cry in the most tortured sound I've heard anywhere is vile. It's so sad
When I was a teenager and EXTREMELY emo, I wrote out the lyrics to “adam’s song” real big and put them up on my wall. Now, 15 years later, I still wonder why my parents weren’t concerned about me. Maybe they were, but they didn’t make it clear if so. If I saw my child had those lyrics on the wall, I would absolutely be worried about them…
I honestly wouldn’t be THAT concerned, because at the end of song there are hopeful lyrics, but I will still probably want to talk to them. But for example, if they wrote the lyrics to Slipknot’s “Scissors” yea I’d definitely be worried…. (Not that that isn’t an amazing song)
I saw Korn in 2015 on their 20th anniversary tour for the album that Daddy is on. I did not expect Jonathan to sing it but they played the album in full, along with some of their newer hits. One of the most emotional things I have ever witnessed and I appreciate how he shared that moment with us.
He is notorious for never wanting any lyrics officially printed or confirmed because they are so personal to him. He is a true tortured artist and hearing his iconic painful screaming is chilling, thrilling, and most importantly real and raw. You can't hardly find that authenticity anymore. The labels have choked it all out of artists in the name of profits. Jonathan Davis is one of the best and last of the true artist. So glad I was alive in his time line.
One by Metallica is also pretty dark. It’s about the book “Johnny Got His Gun” and is about a soldier who lost all his limbs and senses to war and is being kept alive by the government. Definitely recommend if you make a part 3.
I adore AiC and Layne Staley but I personally find it difficult to have a certain amount of sympathy for Laynes addiction. Because he knew the dangers of heroin, and he knew he fucked up "My pain is self chosen" It's a weird thing I really want to feel for Layne but I cant. Guess he just made a mistake.

Only problem is the guy keeps trying to contact my sister (his ex) and other family members. To make matters worse, he’s actually engaged to somebody and they’re expecting a son pretty soon.
The KoRn one got me really bad my mom always told me to tell her if someone ever touched us in the places we didn't feel comfortable with. I just want people to know if you are a victim of SA I really want you to know that I care people care and I'm so sorry that you had to go through such a horrible time. Layne Staley had such a depressing death, 5 years trying to cut himself from the outside world to do heroin in his apartment when not too long ago he was part of one of the world's biggest groups, died of an overdose, nobody found the body until 2 weeks later when it was pretty decayed. Easily the greatest vocalist of all time. The more you read or find out about his death, the worse and more tragic it gets, you'd think it won't get any worse but it gets worse each time, his mom when they discovered his body sat next to his corpse and just apologised on how it ended. At first she was advised not to go in the apartment but she went anyways and thought her son's body was a art project Layne was doing at first before she realised what she was actually looking at.
It gets worse if you hear about ppl who knew him or interacted with him in his last years. Aside of the fact that her ex-partner died from what is assumed to be an infection from shooting heroin, Mike Starr visited him days before his death, he told Starr that he saw his ex-partner days before or sum (but like, seriously), they fought and the last words Mike heard from him were "don't leave me". A bunch of ppl from his area said that he was very erratic, ppl who knew him said that he didn't look anything alike himself at that point, some said he smelled really bad. But the worst is truly everything about his dad, dude was very unlucky, he really deserved a lot better :/

He was 16 years old when he watched one of his best friends be k!lled right next to him. Also, tuv didn't mention that the real-life story that inspired the song was an email Travis received from a teenage fan that was basically a copy of the suic!de note he wrote to his parents before he took his own life.

I would recommend The Light Behind Your Eyes by My Chemical Romance. It's Gerard Way's (singer of the band) goodbye message to his daughter because he thought he wouldn't make it out of his relapse alive. It's quite sad. Luckily, he's doing well now.

One really important aspect of Nutshell is not only Layne's addiction, but the media's perception of it. That first line relates to things he has said about articles claiming he had AIDS, lost an arm/finger, or generally discussing his addiction in a sensationalized way. As an addict in recovery, I can't understand how painful it would be having to constantly see these things being said about you in mass media-- it's hard enough to have it on your mind, nevermind a magazine cover. Layne once said something to the effect of "I'm always learning something about myself on the internet, apparently I'm dead". There's a message from the album Dirt in particular that is often missed when listening to the album in pieces. The middle section of the album (from Junkhead to Angry Chair) is a story about the grim reality of heroin use, from the early romanticization of the drug (that feeling that you've discovered the greatest thing on earth and no one else "gets it") to the realization that you're trapped in a miserable place with no clear escape. Love their heavy stuff but their acoustic work (if you haven't heard their first EP called SAP, you're missing out) is especially chilling.
"Please tell mom this is not her fault" from Adam's Song is the line that hits me hardest. It's something that has crossed my mind at my lowest points and it makes the emotions expressed in the rest of the song that much more genuine and relatable. Great video, tuv.

Cried at the nutshell lyrics. It is so hard to imagine the grip heroin can have on you until you’re in it, and when you’re in it it’s too late. There is a solution and sobriety is possible. I struggled with substances since I was a young teen but heroin took me out harder and faster than I ever anticipated. 2 years clean now and couldn’t be happier. Love you Tuv!

A cruical part you missed out of the Adam's Song section is how only a year after the song came out a 17 year old Columbine survivor tragically took their own life which playing the song on repeat. I believe they ended up retiring the song from their live sets a few years later. Makes a song with a dark backstory even more tragic.

Despite the long shadow of grief and sorrow that looms over the town of Littleton, Colorado following the tragedy at Columbine High School; there are a few tales from the aftermath of the shooting that can give some a reason to smile and believe in the good of humanity. First; John Savage (a survivor of the tragedy in the library) found his calling in life and became a hostage crisis negotiator. Secondly, Frank DeAngelis stayed on as the principal of Columbine High School until the last group of students who were in Preschool when the tragedy occurred had graduated. This was a fifteen year period of time from 1999 to 2014. Thirdly, a small group of former Columbine students have returned to the school as teachers. Their names are Katie Tennessen, Mandy Cooke, Alise Steiner, Noelle Sudano, Chris Welsh, Brett O'Neil, and Zach Martin. Their decision to return to Columbine as teachers is their way of saying that while the tragedy had bent them they would not be broken. Noelle revealed that on her first day back at the school; parents and teachers lined the sidewalk to shield the students from the media as they made their way into the building. Fourthly, Kacey Johnson (née Reugsegger) has become an advocate for bone and tissue donation as she had been shot in the shoulder and it was through donated bone and tissue that doctors were not only able to save Kacey's life but also spare her arm from being amputated. Kacey explained in an interview with the Fox TV station in Cleveland, Ohio that because she has four young children she needs both of her arms. Though the biggest surprise is that Rachel Scott's mother Beth Nimmo chose to not only forgive but also meet with Dylan's mother Sue Klebold. In an interview with Hoda Kotb for the "Today" show on NBC to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the shooting; Beth explained that forgiveness isn't saying that what happened was okay, but forgiveness is giving herself permission to not make this tragedy her life sentence. Before she met with Sue Klebold; Beth said that she asked God what was she supposed to say to Sue and He told her to ask Sue about who Dylan was before April 20, 1999. When Beth asked this question; she said that tears began rolling down Sue's cheeks because no one had ever asked her such a question. Speaking of Sue Klebold; Columbine survivor Anne Marie Hochhalter published an open letter to Sue Klebold on Facebook in 2016 following the publication of Sue's book "A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy." Anne Marie explained that her decision to forgive Sue Klebold stemmed from the realization that holding onto the feelings of anger and hatred towards Sue was doing nothing for her aside from weighing her down. Anne Marie was put through the wringer after the shooting. Aside from being paralyzed from the shooting and having to get used to life in a wheelchair; Anne Marie also had to deal with the stress of media intrusion. Though the biggest blow Anne Marie suffered occurred six months after the shooting when her mother Carla committed suicide. This was extremely upsetting for Anne Marie as she not only had to grieve the suicide of her mother but also had to deal with the stress of media intrusion. When asked if Columbine drove her mother to commit suicide; Anne Marie is quick to say no and explains that her mother had struggled with Depression for years, so while Columbine didn't cause her mother to become depressed or commit suicide it didn't help her either.
Alice In Chains' self-titled album in 1995, is haunting and chilling as the Nutshell song, that it's their darkest album. It tells about not also drugs, but also depression, isolation, death, relationship issues and even record label issues. Frogs is another perfect example for songs with disturbing backstories, not also this song is about drug addiction, but also about depression and loneliness. As for KoЯn, there's another song called "Trash" from their 1999 album Issues. Hell, even this album is also unsettling, about conflicts with band members, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, sex, and same goes with depression and isolation.
@@beefysupreme that’s an interesting take. I think self-titled is darker because while Dirt is dark too, but it’s like dark but with touches of beauty accenting everything. The type of dark that the self titled album feels like (to me) is more grimy and miserable and sort of self-loathing. That doesn’t reflect my opinions on them though. Their self titled album is like my 2nd or 3rd favorite album of theirs while Dirt is actually one of my least favorite AIC albums (controversial opinion, I know). Not to say I don’t like because I do think it’s a great album, I just like most of the other albums more.

As a teenager I watched celebrity rehab, and Mike starr was on there and he talked about the immense guilt he felt about Layne and they even brought Laynes mother to talk to Mike. RIP to them both.

There will never be a song as real as daddy by KoRn… EVER. Jonathan Davis (the vocalist) told the band before performing that not no matter what happened he wanted them to continue performing. After they were done performing the band gave him a big hug and Jonathan stated “That was the first time I really knew I was in a band”
So happy to see adam's song on here. It's always resonated with me as someone who suffers from depression and probably one of the only comforts I could turn to.
Seeing Alice in Chains here (and Nutshell/Jar Of Flies being mentioned and explained) made me so happy. I hope more people start to listen to them and get to know Layne's story through this video, AIC has been my favorite band for a long time now. Nutshell is truly haunting, especially considering how much the media basically spewed lies about his addiction.
just clarifying, the clip from the jpegmafia song was used because he was commentating on police brutality. the clip was meant to show how a horrible situation like that is usually sympathized with, but the victims of police brutality in america aren't. its also a commentary on how veterans are treated by the system, and how the incident is an example of cops being faced with the reality of their abuse. it's one of my favorite songs from him as my latin-chinese dad is a victim of it himself. peggy's music will always have a special place in my heart
Another awful facts about Staley's last years: In 1998, he contracted gangrene as a result of his drug abuse, and later couldn't even have the ability to consume and ingest food, surviving off supplements in what was left of his life. His body weighted 85 lbs/38.5 kgs when it was later found; Layne was over 6 ft/1.8 m tall. There was also a speculation of him losing his arm due to the gangrene, but it turned out to be false. That being said, RIP Layne Staley. Thank you for being such an inspiration for my road to music.
Although it’s true that he was extremely skinny at the time of his death, Staley’s primary weight loss was attributed to decomposition. After 2 weeks, pretty much all of the water and fat that was in the body will have mostly either exited the body through orifices and ruptures (sorry), or just evaporated.
Listening to his voice my whole life (since 1998 ironically) and never knew the brutality of his death, that’s an absolutely heartbreaking way to go out ): RIP Layne, if only you knew the influence you still hold today….genuine legend & an inspiration for so many of my generation (and beyond)

Most songs where Layne talks about his drug addiction it's so cold hearted and honest. It's heartbreaking how they tried to help him so many times and it never worked.
Another song with a very disturbing backstory is “I Did It To You!” by Big Lurch. The song itself contains lyrics about murder and can comparing himself to vampires and different horror movie killers. The disturbing part is that 2 years after the songs release, Big Lurch would be arrested for murdering his friends girlfriend, cutting open her chest and eating her lung after getting high on PCP. He’s currently in prison serving a life sentence for the murder.

He was stationed in Japan and was depressed and he decided to make the album and if it didn’t become big he would take his own life. It didn’t blow up. I LOVE Alice in Chains! I've been listening to them a ton lately, especially "Nutshell"! I've been clean from IV opiate use for 3 years, 8 months and one day now, and I always listened to them when I was using or detoxing. I've been listening to it lately because my dad died almost 4 weeks ago and then my girlfriend ghosted me last week. AIC always cheers me up a little.

If there ever is a part 3 this songs might be cool to include: Alison Hell by Annihilator is about a young girl that had a mental disorder and her parents would lock her in her room because she was waking up with nightmares. The parents did this for a few years and she went into some kind of full-on mental breakdown and had to be institutionalized. The God That Failed by Metallica is about James Hetfield's (Metallica's rhythm guitarrist and vocalist) mother. She was a religious fanatic, and when she was diagnosed with cancer she refused medical treatment because she didn't belive in modern medicine, eventualy leaving a 16 year old James Hetfield orphan, since his father left the family a couple of year before. Other songs like The Unforgiven and Dyers Eve also follow the same idea. A Tout Le Monde by Megadeth. Even though it could be interpreted as a suicide song, it is about overcoming those obstacles. But Dave Mustaine (guitarist and vocalist) got that new view of the world after trying to overdose in 1993. Fade to Black by Metallica is about a man wanting to comit suicide. At this point in his life, it was said that James Hetfield was very interested in death, and this song was also inspired by James' first amp, which was gifted by his mom shortly before she died, but was stolen just before they started recording the album. To Live is to Die by Metallica is a tribute to Cliff Burton, Metallica's bassit who died at just 24 when on tour the bus driver lost control of the bus and crashed, shooting Cliff out of the window and later crushing him with the bus. In My Darkest Hour by Megadeth has two inspirations, the lyrics being about Dave Mustaine's girlfriend at the time (Diana Aragorn, Dave even name drops her on a previous song talking about him cheating on his exgirlfriend with Diana😭), and his feelings that she doesn't care about him anymore, but the music was written after Dave found out about Cliff's death (Dave was a former member of Metallica, and Cliff was probably his best friend from his time in Metallica). Tornado Of Souls is also inspired by Diana, talking about how Dave was finally free from a toxic relationship. Paranoid by Black Sabbath. Up beat and happy sounding, the song is actually based on Geezer Butler's (bassist) depression as a teen. Lack of Comprehension by Death was inspired by a suicide pact made by two teens in 1985 after listening to Judas Priest's cover of Better by You, Better than Me. Chuck Schuldiner (vocalist and guitarrist) wanted to point out his disgust towards the parents, trying to blame the song instead of their own mistakes. Edit: I want to include a song from my country so; La Bestia by Demólatra talks about an infamous train system used to transport fuels and other materials in Mexico, but it is more known as being a transport method used by centralamerican inmigrants trying to get to the US. It is a very dangerous route, taking into acount dangers such as getting in and jumping out of around 10-15 moving trains in the whole trip, and also being an easy target for racist attacks that include robbery, threats, and even SA.
A lot of these aren't really dark. These types of songs are pretty normal. Considering that this list is almost entirely metal, there's nothing really special here.

if you do a part three, you should do rorochan's suicide show on a livestream. its a japanese song about a real girl who killed herself on live in order to become a 'legend'. its also suspected she was groomed and neglected often. the story was basically pushed under the rug by the japanese government for years until it was brought back by the band who wrote the song.
thats not entirely accurate. 1. the only reason people say she may have been groomed is because there were a couple of weirdos in some of her livestreams. 2. the japanese government did not "push it under the rug" japan has very strict laws about identifying minors in major news outlets because of harassment/doxxing etc. 3. the song is not just about rorochan_1999 but about multiple teen suicides, they just mention her in the song
Just liked to add that she committed suicide because there was pressure because the biggest exam was coming up. And also her account had got banned for no reason. And one of her rivals was making games against her.
I am a huge Korn fan, so the moment I saw Johnathan in the icon I hoped you would cover Daddy. I remember listening to it when I was 12, and I remember it was a version with the crying part sort of cut down, and obviously being a kid I didn't understand the extent of what Johnathan was singing about other than the fact it felt dirty even if I couldn't understand why. His crying in the end always made me upset and I had a tendency to skip over it. Daddy was sort of an eye opening experience for me, and now that I'm older and I know better I can't really listen to it, knowing what him and many other people went through or still go through daily. My heart goes out to anyone who has suffered by the hands of someone else, and please know you are loved. If I'm also remembering right from something I read years ago, Johnathan knew he might not of been able to 'control himself' during the recording of the song, and told his bandmates to keep playing even if he wasn't singing anymore.
Adams song is one of my favorites. I'm happy you covered it. I never knew what the song was actually supposed to be about but I related to the version I created in my head. The nostalgia is real. Now I'm gonna go listen to that song.
As a SA victim who were called a "liar" the two times that happend (One with a familiar, and another with my own mother), when I hear daddy for the first time I did cry so hard that I could feel the pain that johnathan wanted to transfer in that song. And I feel bad for him, and terrible bad for every victim that wasent believe because they were ab,used by a woman/familiar, because is horrible, and discusting, and I just hope this things will change, that people will understand and make everything better for the victims. And if you know, or youre a victim from SA, let them know/you should know, that they/you are worthy, loved, special and DONT deserve anything that happend, youre not a victim but a survivor, a strong person who most know that what happend never will define them/you as a person. When you talked about "please tell mom its not her fault" made me tear up because I can relate as a son and now as a father, sometimes I get angry with my boys for little things, which makes them feel guilty and I only have weekends with them, not much time together, and then I get upset with them...
Man I love your content man it’s eye opening to hear the real meaning behind some of these songs. I got a song that you should definitely cover in the next video is Suzanne by Plan-B, a British MC who made a song from the perspective of a victim of the Camden ripper, a cannibal serial killer who arrested in London in the 2000s. It’s one of the only songs that really disturbed me it’s the acoustic beat intercut with the adlibs as he’s describing what’s going on that makes it so fucked up.
As someone whos battled with depression for most of my life, Adams song has always been a song that I can relate to. Hearing mark sing about his struggles and that they will get better with time has always helped me.
I Won’t See You Tonight (Parts 1 and 2) by Avenged Sevenfold is one of the most hard-hitting pieces of music I’ve heard. Part one describes the perspective of a person who committed suicide, while part two covers the aftermath and the affects of the suicide on their loved ones. It’s about 14ish minutes total and definitely a heavy hitter. The instrumentation, the vocals, the lyrics, and sound effects is beautiful and impactful. I would recommend a listen if you are in a decent state of mind.
When I got back from my deployment to Bosnia in 1996 I would listen to AIC Jar of Flies and Life of Agony River Runs Red back to back every day. Those albums got me through a rough patch. Don't Follow is timeless. The first time I heard Daddy by Korn it reminded me of a comic book a kid brought into class one day when I was a junior in high school in 1991. It was called Exquisite Corpse and there was a couple of panels on a page in the comic book that showed what Jonathan was singing about in the song. It always stuck with me. Usually the song will create an image in your head but in this case I already had an image in my head to go with the song. You should add the song Sullivan by Caroline's spine on your next backstories video. It's based on a true story about five brothers from World War II. They loosely based Saving Private Ryan on them.

Laynes death is so depressing. That man had the most incredible voice. With disturbing songs, korn's Daddy definitely comes to mind... definitely hard to listen to. Prison Sex by Tool is another one, it gives me chills.
Adam's song was also written for a fan who sent mail to the band detailing his mental health issues. Before they could reply, he'd taken his own life, and they named the song after him
It's crazy how often the darkest songs are the best. Nutshell is a great song, and Alice In Chains is great in general. Smashing Pumpkins is another legendary band, and Siamese Dream is one of my favorite albums, not leaving out Today of course. And for Blink-182, Adam's Song is probably my favorite songs by them (haven't dived into their discography yet).

i have been a korn fan since i was in elementary school. i was never able to listen to daddy all the way through because a similar incident happened to me when i was young. screaming and no one hearing, and not being believed when i try to tell my parents about it. you learn to live with the pain, but after awhile, the song helped me heal.
AIC is such a good band definitely one of my favourites along with KoRn, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Type O Negative and Deftones, but sadly no one really talks about them compared to other grunge bands which is upsetting because they've made some amazing albums which a lot of people don't know.
I remember listening to Daddy for the first time and it felt like a disturbing spiritual journey. I literally grew as a person after watching it it’s just that powerful of a song.
Korn was the first band that got me into Nu metal and Metal in general and after listening to all of their albums and finally coming across this song you can hear how raw the emotional and mental agony and torment that Jonathan must’ve been going through, this is by far the saddest song out of all in my opinion cause he doesn’t hide behind seemingly positive lyrics, he puts it all out on the table.
TW - mentions of suicide “please tell mom this is not her fault” is the line that really hits home. depression is a real thing and most people who end up attempting suicide or succeeding, they dont even think about their loved ones. i havent done it because i love my mom and i know how much it would affect her.
Songs with disturbing/serious lyrics and discussing such topics while having an energetic/beautiful/calm melody are a different breed. This reminds me of the song "Shinitai-chan". It's one of my most favourite songs, if you just listen to the melody and the voice you can pretty much fall asleep. But when you pay attention to the lyrics, it paints a whole other picture for you.
I absolutely love Jar of Flies. The album was definitely different to their grunge sound, but it was done so beautifully. Their acoustic set from MTV Unplugged was a core moment for me when I saw it. You could see how they poured their souls and emotion into it. RIP Layne and Mike. P.S. Do Prison Sex by Tool! It's about a person who was r*ped as a young person, and becomes the perpetrator. One song I want to add is Taion ("Body temperature") by the gazettE in 2006 as a part of their Nil album. It's in Japanese, but when you read up the lyrics, it talks about a person who is suffering and struggling to live through some sort of torture. The fandom had always related this song to Junko Furuta's case because of the implications in the song being set in midwinter (plus the MV features a girl in winter setting) although the vocalist Ruki never really confirmed it himself if it was a tribute to that specific case, he did say that a gruesome story on the internet he read with their bassist Reita was what pushed him to make the song. In his own words in an interview, "I don’t know what’s the best way to express it but, if I wanted to put it into words, those lyrics are uneasy and anguished. It’s a song I wanted to leave behind because I don’t want to forget.". I remember watching their live for Decomposition Beauty and the way he sang the song and screamed at the beginning, middle and end was spine chilling. Like a woman screaming in pain and anguish.

My mother and I loved Alice In Chains.. she suffered many years with a heroin addiction and so did I. She overdosed and I felt her die in my arms. Paramedics revived her but I knew it had been too long. Doctors told me she had no brain activity and it was time to take her off of support. I did her makeup and played Nutshell for us… then I said goodbye to my mother in the same hospital that she gave birth to me in.

The Korn one is so sad, because a lot of male victims STILL aren't believed to this day. The double standard and bias of SA victims/abusers is horrible, and I really hope that one day male victims can get the justice they deserve from their abusers. Yeah I remember seeing a British kid get SA'd, the woman said she tought he was 16, and then got off scott-free. No jail time, no community service, and not even a 0.01 fined.
I used to help people dealing with what could have been their last moments alive. A majority were males that weren't being believed or just plain ignored for what happened to them when they were younger.
As someone that had to deal with that for years and my own father just ignoring it and even blaming me it really upset me.
Thankfully those guys are still alive and are in a much better place now having received the help they seriously needed and knowing they were truly believed in and that we were taking what they said seriously. With very serious reprocussions to their assaulters.

When I was a teenager and EXTREMELY emo, I wrote out the lyrics to “adam’s song” real big and put them up on my wall. Now, 15 years later, I still wonder why my parents weren’t concerned about me. I saw Korn in 2015 on their 20th anniversary tour for the album that Daddy is on. I did not expect Jonathan to sing it but they played the album in full, along with some of their newer hits. One of the most emotional things I have ever witnessed and I appreciate how he shared that moment with us.
I also saw them on that tour it was very emotional when they played daddy I remember just being unsettled during the track

He is a true tortured artist and hearing his iconic painful screaming is chilling, thrilling, and most importantly real and raw. You can't hardly find that authenticity anymore. The labels have choked it all out of artists in the name of profits.
Jonathan Davis is one of the best and last of the true artist. So glad I was alive in his time line.

Layne Staley had such a depressing death, 5 years trying to cut himself from the outside world to do heroin in his apartment when not too long ago he was part of one of the world's biggest groups, died of an overdose, nobody found the body until 2 weeks later when it was pretty decayed. Easily the greatest vocalist of all time. The more you read or find out about his death, the worse and more tragic it gets, you'd think it won't get any worse but it gets worse each time, his mom when they discovered his body sat next to his corpse and just apologised on how it ended. At first she was advised not to go in the apartment but she went anyways and thought her son's body was a art project Layne was doing at first before she realised what she was actually looking at.

Aside of the fact that her ex-partner died from what is assumed to be an infection from shooting heroin, Mike Starr visited him days before his death, he told Starr that he saw his ex-partner days before or sum (but like, seriously), they fought and the last words Mike heard from him were "don't leave me".
A bunch of ppl from his area said that he was very erratic, ppl who knew him said that he didn't look anything alike himself at that point, some said he smelled really bad.
But the worst is truly everything about his dad, dude was very unlucky, he really deserved a lot better :/

He was 16 years old when he watched one of his best friends be k!lled right next to him. Also, tuv didn't mention that the real-life story that inspired the song was an email Travis received from a teenage fan that was basically a copy of the suic!de note he wrote to his parents before he took his own life.

One really important aspect of Nutshell is not only Layne's addiction, but the media's perception of it. That first line relates to things he has said about articles claiming he had AIDS, lost an arm/finger, or generally discussing his addiction in a sensationalized way. As an addict in recovery, I can't understand how painful it would be having to constantly see these things being said about you in mass media-- it's hard enough to have it on your mind, nevermind a magazine cover. Layne once said something to the effect of "I'm always learning something about myself on the internet, apparently I'm dead". There's a message from the album Dirt in particular that is often missed when listening to the album in pieces. The middle section of the album (from Junkhead to Angry Chair) is a story about the grim reality of heroin use, from the early romanticization of the drug (that feeling that you've discovered the greatest thing on earth and no one else "gets it") to the realization that you're trapped in a miserable place with no clear escape. Love their heavy stuff but their acoustic work (if you haven't heard their first EP called SAP, you're missing out) is especially chilling.
The quote you mentioned is actually referenced in Grind, too "In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised not to plan my funeral 'fore the body dies"
"Please tell mom this is not her fault" from Adam's Song is the line that hits me hardest. It's something that has crossed my mind at my lowest points and it makes the emotions expressed in the rest of the song that much more genuine and relatable. Great video, tuv.

Cried at the nutshell lyrics. It is so hard to imagine the grip heroin can have on you until you’re in it, and when you’re in it it’s too late. There is a solution and sobriety is possible. I struggled with substances since I was a young teen but heroin took me out harder and faster than I ever anticipated. 2 years clean now and couldn’t be happier. Love you Tuv!

As soon as you mentioned Adam's Song I immediately started crying. You're not lying about the line "please tell mom this is not her fault" ... That line has saved me several times.
A cruical part you missed out of the Adam's Song section is how only a year after the song came out a 17 year old Columbine survivor tragically took their own life which playing the song on repeat. I believe they ended up retiring the song from their live sets a few years later. Makes a song with a dark backstory even more tragic.

First; John Savage (a survivor of the tragedy in the library) found his calling in life and became a hostage crisis negotiator. Secondly, Frank DeAngelis stayed on as the principal of Columbine High School until the last group of students who were in Preschool when the tragedy occurred had graduated. This was a fifteen year period of time from 1999 to 2014. Thirdly, a small group of former Columbine students have returned to the school as teachers. In an interview with Hoda Kotb for the "Today" show on NBC to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the shooting; Beth explained that forgiveness isn't saying that what happened was okay, but forgiveness is giving herself permission to not make this tragedy her life sentence. Before she met with Sue Klebold; Beth said that she asked God what was she supposed to say to Sue and He told her to ask Sue about who Dylan was before April 20, 1999. When Beth asked this question; she said that tears began rolling down Sue's cheeks because no one had ever asked her such a question. Speaking of Sue Klebold; Columbine survivor Anne Marie Hochhalter published an open letter to Sue Klebold on Facebook in 2016 following the publication of Sue's book "A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy." Anne Marie explained that her decision to forgive Sue Klebold stemmed from the realization that holding onto the feelings of anger and hatred towards Sue was doing nothing for her aside from weighing her down. Anne Marie was put through the wringer after the shooting. Aside from being paralyzed from the shooting and having to get used to life in a wheelchair; Anne Marie also had to deal with the stress of media intrusion. Though the biggest blow Anne Marie suffered occurred six months after the shooting when her mother Carla committed suicide. This was extremely upsetting for Anne Marie as she not only had to grieve the suicide of her mother but also had to deal with the stress of media intrusion. When asked if Columbine drove her mother to commit suicide; Anne Marie is quick to say no and explains that her mother had struggled with Depression for years, so while Columbine didn't cause her mother to become depressed or commit suicide it didn't help her either.

Alice In Chains' self-titled album in 1995, is haunting and chilling as the Nutshell song, that it's their darkest album. It tells about not also drugs, but also depression, isolation, death, relationship issues and even record label issues. Frogs is another perfect example for songs with disturbing backstories, not also this song is about drug addiction, but also about depression and loneliness.
As for KoЯn, there's another song called "Trash" from their 1999 album Issues. Hell, even this album is also unsettling, about conflicts with band members, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, sex, and same goes with depression and isolation.

@@beefysupreme that’s an interesting take. I think self-titled is darker because while Dirt is dark too, but it’s like dark but with touches of beauty accenting everything. The type of dark that the self titled album feels like (to me) is more grimy and miserable and sort of self-loathing.
That doesn’t reflect my opinions on them though. Their self titled album is like my 2nd or 3rd favorite album of theirs while Dirt is actually one of my least favorite AIC albums (controversial opinion, I know). Not to say I don’t like because I do think it’s a great album, I just like most of the other albums more.

So happy to see adam's song on here. It's always resonated with me as someone who suffers from depression and probably one of the only comforts I could turn to.
Seeing Alice in Chains here (and Nutshell/Jar Of Flies being mentioned and explained) made me so happy. I hope more people start to listen to them and get to know Layne's story through this video, AIC has been my favorite band for a long time now. Nutshell is truly haunting, especially considering how much the media basically spewed lies about his addiction.

just clarifying, the clip from the jpegmafia song was used because he was commentating on police brutality. the clip was meant to show how a horrible situation like that is usually sympathized with, but the victims of police brutality in america aren't. its also a commentary on how veterans are treated by the system, and how the incident is an example of cops being faced with the reality of their abuse. it's one of my favorite songs from him as my latin-chinese dad is a victim of it himself. peggy's music will always have a special place in my heart

Another awful facts about Staley's last years: In 1998, he contracted gangrene as a result of his drug abuse, and later couldn't even have the ability to consume and ingest food, surviving off supplements in what was left of his life. His body weighted 85 lbs/38.5 kgs when it was later found; Layne was over 6 ft/1.8 m tall. There was also a speculation of him losing his arm due to the gangrene, but it turned out to be false.
That being said, RIP Layne Staley. Thank you for being such an inspiration for my road to music.

Although it’s true that he was extremely skinny at the time of his death, Staley’s primary weight loss was attributed to decomposition. After 2 weeks, pretty much all of the water and fat that was in the body will have mostly either exited the body through orifices and ruptures (sorry), or just evaporated.

Most songs where Layne talks about his drug addiction it's so cold hearted and honest. It's heartbreaking how they tried to help him so many times and it never worked.
Another song with a very disturbing backstory is “I Did It To You!” by Big Lurch.
The song itself contains lyrics about murder and can comparing himself to vampires and different horror movie killers. The disturbing part is that 2 years after the songs release, Big Lurch would be arrested for murdering his friends girlfriend, cutting open her chest and eating her lung after getting high on PCP. He’s currently in prison serving a life sentence for the murder.

Glad to see JPEGMAFIA on this list. I feel like his album “The Ghost Pop Tape” under his other name “Devon Hendryx” is very disturbing and sad and the backstory is even sadder. He was stationed in Japan and was depressed and he decided to make the album and if it didn’t become big he would take his own life. It didn’t blow up. But luckily he didn’t go through with it and still continues to make music to this day! Love Peggy ❤️

I LOVE Alice in Chains! I've been listening to them a ton lately, especially "Nutshell"! I've been clean from IV opiate use for 3 years, 8 months and one day now, and I always listened to them when I was using or detoxing.
I've been listening to it lately because my dad died almost 4 weeks ago and then my girlfriend ghosted me last week. AIC always cheers me up a little.

Alison Hell by Annihilator is about a young girl that had a mental disorder and her parents would lock her in her room because she was waking up with nightmares. The parents did this for a few years and she went into some kind of full-on mental breakdown and had to be institutionalized.
The God That Failed by Metallica is about James Hetfield's (Metallica's rhythm guitarrist and vocalist) mother. She was a religious fanatic, and when she was diagnosed with cancer she refused medical treatment because she didn't belive in modern medicine, eventualy leaving a 16 year old James Hetfield orphan, since his father left the family a couple of year before. Other songs like The Unforgiven and Dyers Eve also follow the same idea.
A Tout Le Monde by Megadeth. Even though it could be interpreted as a suicide song, it is about overcoming those obstacles. But Dave Mustaine (guitarist and vocalist) got that new view of the world after trying to overdose in 1993.
Fade to Black by Metallica is about a man wanting to comit suicide. At this point in his life, it was said that James Hetfield was very interested in death, and this song was also inspired by James' first amp, which was gifted by his mom shortly before she died, but was stolen just before they started recording the album.
To Live is to Die by Metallica is a tribute to Cliff Burton, Metallica's bassit who died at just 24 when on tour the bus driver lost control of the bus and crashed, shooting Cliff out of the window and later crushing him with the bus.
In My Darkest Hour by Megadeth has two inspirations, the lyrics being about Dave Mustaine's girlfriend at the time (Diana Aragorn, Dave even name drops her on a previous song talking about him cheating on his exgirlfriend with Diana😭), and his feelings that she doesn't care about him anymore, but the music was written after Dave found out about Cliff's death (Dave was a former member of Metallica, and Cliff was probably his best friend from his time in Metallica). Tornado Of Souls is also inspired by Diana, talking about how Dave was finally free from a toxic relationship.
Paranoid by Black Sabbath. Up beat and happy sounding, the song is actually based on Geezer Butler's (bassist) depression as a teen.
Lack of Comprehension by Death was inspired by a suicide pact made by two teens in 1985 after listening to Judas Priest's cover of Better by You, Better than Me. Chuck Schuldiner (vocalist and guitarrist) wanted to point out his disgust towards the parents, trying to blame the song instead of their own mistakes.
Edit: I want to include a song from my country so; La Bestia by Demólatra talks about an infamous train system used to transport fuels and other materials in Mexico, but it is more known as being a transport method used by centralamerican inmigrants trying to get to the US. It is a very dangerous route, taking into acount dangers such as getting in and jumping out of around 10-15 moving trains in the whole trip, and also being an easy target for racist attacks that include robbery, threats, and even SA.
A lot of these aren't really dark. These types of songs are pretty normal. Considering that this list is almost entirely metal, there's nothing really special here.

if you do a part three, you should do rorochan's suicide show on a livestream. its a japanese song about a real girl who killed herself on live in order to become a 'legend'. its also suspected she was groomed and neglected often. the story was basically pushed under the rug by the japanese government for years until it was brought back by the band who wrote the song.
thats not entirely accurate.
1. the only reason people say she may have been groomed is because there were a couple of weirdos in some of her livestreams.
2. the japanese government did not "push it under the rug" japan has very strict laws about identifying minors in major news outlets because of harassment/doxxing etc.
3. the song is not just about rorochan_1999 but about multiple teen suicides, they just mention her in the song

Just liked to add that she committed suicide because there was pressure because the biggest exam was coming up. And also her account had got banned for no reason. And one of her rivals was making games against her.
I suggested this one in part one and was holding out for it to be in this video, it’s a horribly interesting case that people should know about.
I am a huge Korn fan, so the moment I saw Johnathan in the icon I hoped you would cover Daddy. I remember listening to it when I was 12, and I remember it was a version with the crying part sort of cut down, and obviously being a kid I didn't understand the extent of what Johnathan was singing about other than the fact it felt dirty even if I couldn't understand why. His crying in the end always made me upset and I had a tendency to skip over it. Daddy was sort of an eye opening experience for me, and now that I'm older and I know better I can't really listen to it, knowing what him and many other people went through or still go through daily.
My heart goes out to anyone who has suffered by the hands of someone else, and please know you are loved.
If I'm also remembering right from something I read years ago, Johnathan knew he might not of been able to 'control himself' during the recording of the song, and told his bandmates to keep playing even if he wasn't singing anymore.

As a SA victim who were called a "liar" the two times that happend (One with a familiar, and another with my own mother), when I hear daddy for the first time I did cry so hard that I could feel the pain that johnathan wanted to transfer in that song. And I feel bad for him, and terrible bad for every victim that wasent believe because they were ab,used by a woman/familiar, because is horrible, and discusting, and I just hope this things will change, that people will understand and make everything better for the victims.
And if you know, or youre a victim from SA, let them know/you should know, that they/you are worthy, loved, special and DONT deserve anything that happend, youre not a victim but a survivor, a strong person who most know that what happend never will define them/you as a person. Youre/their are beautiful, so please, take care and be safe, ask for help not matter how hard it will be, you/they deserve it.

Man I love your content man it’s eye opening to hear the real meaning behind some of these songs. I got a song that you should definitely cover in the next video is Suzanne by Plan-B, a British MC who made a song from the perspective of a victim of the Camden ripper, a cannibal serial killer who arrested in London in the 2000s. It’s one of the only songs that really disturbed me it’s the acoustic beat intercut with the adlibs as he’s describing what’s going on that makes it so fucked up.
As someone whos battled with depression for most of my life, Adams song has always been a song that I can relate to. Hearing mark sing about his struggles and that they will get better with time has always helped me.

I Won’t See You Tonight (Parts 1 and 2) by Avenged Sevenfold is one of the most hard-hitting pieces of music I’ve heard. Part one describes the perspective of a person who committed suicide, while part two covers the aftermath and the affects of the suicide on their loved ones. It’s about 14ish minutes total and definitely a heavy hitter. The instrumentation, the vocals, the lyrics, and sound effects is beautiful and impactful. I would recommend a listen if you are in a decent state of mind.

When I got back from my deployment to Bosnia in 1996 I would listen to AIC Jar of Flies and Life of Agony River Runs Red back to back every day. Those albums got me through a rough patch. Don't Follow is timeless.
The first time I heard Daddy by Korn it reminded me of a comic book a kid brought into class one day when I was a junior in high school in 1991. It was called Exquisite Corpse and there was a couple of panels on a page in the comic book that showed what Jonathan was singing about in the song. It always stuck with me. Usually the song will create an image in your head but in this case I already had an image in my head to go with the song.
You should add the song Sullivan by Caroline's spine on your next backstories video. It's based on a true story about five brothers from World War II. They loosely based Saving Private Ryan on them.
A friend used to sing pop punk songs at karaoke nights. Adam's Song was in her regular rotation. She lost her fight a few years ago.

Laynes death is so depressing. That man had the most incredible voice. With disturbing songs, korn's Daddy definitely comes to mind... definitely hard to listen to. Prison Sex by Tool is another one, it gives me chills.
Adam's song was also written for a fan who sent mail to the band detailing his mental health issues. Before they could reply, he'd taken his own life, and they named the song after him
It's crazy how often the darkest songs are the best. Nutshell is a great song, and Alice In Chains is great in general. Smashing Pumpkins is another legendary band, and Siamese Dream is one of my favorite albums, not leaving out Today of course. And for Blink-182, Adam's Song is probably my favorite songs by them (haven't dived into their discography yet).
AIC's nutshell has never failed to bring tears to my eyes. Thinking of how Layne suffered in his last days, thinking he couldn't be saved because of his illness, all alone in his apartment. my heart clenches every time

i have been a korn fan since i was in elementary school. i was never able to listen to daddy all the way through because a similar incident happened to me when i was young. screaming and no one hearing, and not being believed when i try to tell my parents about it. you learn to live with the pain, but after awhile, the song helped me heal.

AIC is such a good band definitely one of my favourites along with KoRn, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Type O Negative and Deftones, but sadly no one really talks about them compared to other grunge bands which is upsetting because they've made some amazing albums which a lot of people don't know.
I remember listening to Daddy for the first time and it felt like a disturbing spiritual journey. I literally grew as a person after watching it it’s just that powerful of a song.
Korn was the first band that got me into Nu metal and Metal in general and after listening to all of their albums and finally coming across this song you can hear how raw the emotional and mental agony and torment that Jonathan must’ve been going through, this is by far the saddest song out of all in my opinion cause he doesn’t hide behind seemingly positive lyrics, he puts it all out on the table.

Songs with disturbing/serious lyrics and discussing such topics while having an energetic/beautiful/calm melody are a different breed. This reminds me of the song "Shinitai-chan". It's one of my most favourite songs, if you just listen to the melody and the voice you can pretty much fall asleep. But when you pay attention to the lyrics, it paints a whole other picture for you.
As a person who learnt japanese, i can full heartedly agree. It’s a very dark song.

I absolutely love Jar of Flies. The album was definitely different to their grunge sound, but it was done so beautifully. Their acoustic set from MTV Unplugged was a core moment for me when I saw it. You could see how they poured their souls and emotion into it. RIP Layne and Mike.
P.S. Do Prison Sex by Tool! It's about a person who was r*ped as a young person, and becomes the perpetrator. Hence the line, "Do unto others what has been done to me. Do unto others what had been done to you."

One song I want to add is Taion ("Body temperature") by the gazettE in 2006 as a part of their Nil album. It's in Japanese, but when you read up the lyrics, it talks about a person who is suffering and struggling to live through some sort of torture. The fandom had always related this song to Junko Furuta's case because of the implications in the song being set in midwinter (plus the MV features a girl in winter setting) although the vocalist Ruki never really confirmed it himself if it was a tribute to that specific case, he did say that a gruesome story on the internet he read with their bassist Reita was what pushed him to make the song. In his own words in an interview, "I don’t know what’s the best way to express it but, if I wanted to put it into words, those lyrics are uneasy and anguished. It’s a song I wanted to leave behind because I don’t want to forget.". I remember watching their live for Decomposition Beauty and the way he sang the song and screamed at the beginning, middle and end was spine chilling. Like a woman screaming in pain and anguish.

Layne without a doubt was the best singer from the grunge scene, and what hurts is the fact that when he died, he didnt get the respect, not even from Seattle fans, the way they were there when kurt died, everybody almost didnt care, a man who gave his life entirely to music , deserved a better send off

adam's song actually reminds me more of my cousin who OD'd, rather than unlife note. mainly cuz of the beginning line "i never thought, i'd die alone" cuz like, he was alone, no one found him for a good couple of weeks. even after like 10 years, it still sucks. soon i'll be the same age as him when he passed. awful and weird thought, lol
but when i hear adam's song, its less in saddness but more in melancholy happiness, cuz it reminds me of my cousin ingeneral! he was a great guy who struggled with alot, but that song oddly enough brings back good memories (very specific memories, like memory feelings? like, idk, hard to explain,....kind of an alien feeling mixed with some liminal space and alittle bit of floating around) but still, good memories

Korn has been my number 1 band for almost 7 years now, Jonathan Davis is such a god damn legend for keeping on going after all the shit he experienced, and like many other people, it hits so god damn close to home in such a sick yet exciting way

As someone who has been a fan of KoRn at the age of 13, when I first listened to Daddy I was left in shock. That song fucked me up and it made me feel so bad for Jonathan Davis along with everyone who had that experience.
the saddest song by the ataris is about the lead singer who’s dad left them as a child, and then he had to leave his kid to be on tour while the mom has custody. zoe jane by staind is about the love a dad has for his child, and how he hates to leave her. stay together for the kids by blink 182 is about children who have to listen to the parents fight all the time and are always stuck wondering why they hate each other.
