    Okay, so let's just compare idioms here. They weren't all bad....but walking on egg shells versus walking on broken glass?? Those mean two very different things. They're lost in the imagery (or perhaps just the first two words) and forgetting the original meaning of the idioms they're attempting to replace.
    Walking on egg shells = being careful (trying to not break the figurative egg shells)
    Walking on broken glass = a punishment...because the glass is already broken, so your feet are getting figuratively cut up
    It's nit-picky, I know, but it really bothered me.

    • @DemyrNox
      @DemyrNox 3 роки тому +4

      Walking on broken glass is also about being careful where you walk though. It's just different because one is you trying to not break anything and the other is you trying to not hurt yourself

      @sarahnaithammou 3 роки тому +4

      @@DemyrNox Yeah, while I can definitely appreciate that people can mean whatever they want, more or less, these idioms do have historically accepted meanings.
      And if PETA's going to suggest a long-term replacement of a widely accepted and understood idiom, it might be best to choose something that doesn't have a completely different meaning and connotation according to not just the way people generally use it, but the history/origin of the idiom.
      I saw someone else say that "walking on thin ice" might be more appropriate.
      But at the end of the day, this is all just nit-picky and semantics-based when I don't even think "walking on egg shells" is doing any harm anyway. :)

I mean dogs are loyal, sloths are slow, and tigers are fierce, humans display these characteristics, why not reference the likeness.

    How is killing animals in a survival game a weird concept? We would all try to kill something for food if he were starving out in the wild. If it's a well designed game, eating something like berries will give you less energy than meat. Meat also comes with risks, you can get damage points, because the animal attacks back, for instance... it literally simulates survival. You can even get hypothermia, you can die from food poisoning, a wild animal attack, etc. I don't think there's anything wrong with these games, it's not like you'll have an urge to become a hunter all of a sudden. And even in a vegan world, people would want to play these games because they satisfy a curiosity. There's a million games out there, just because people are curious about different experiences, and it can range from "I wonder what's it like to live in medieval times" all to "I wonder what's it like to be a garbage collector"... Or a cook, or a goose. (The goose game's really hilarious by the way.)
    I get your point, but a survival game is really a bad example. Maybe cooking games would be a better one, but again, people do get curious about things they don't or can't experience.

    Rat was a rat fink or narc and used that way in older movies. "You dirty rat" used by actors as gangsters like James Cagney. Then it referred to the austere persona of cool but coolness as cold calculating rat pack in reference to criminal activity and violence of mobsters toward narcs. And cool like putting them on ice. Being cool or hip which my parents said came from hippies could be questionable words. And words my parents questioned me about. Pigs love dirt and that is the question whether someone is a pig. Kids used to love making mud pies. Piggy also refer to toes and smell but also the nursery rhyme references behavior possibly gluttony a roast and none also and maybe money like a sow ear purse crying (with no money all the way home?) baby toe like a baby piggy squealing. But if one went to Market and the other stayef home and 1 had a whole roast and the other one none; who was the one crying all the way home? Did the pig that stayed home eat or did the pig that went to Market eat? Maybe the pig with money stayed home and the one sent to Market didn't get to eat regularly cried coming home from the market? It is a riddle. If you lie down with dogs you get fleas. Would you throw pearls to swine. I think cartoons have used animals as characters in a way relatable to people. Not all animal cartoon characters fall into animal demeaning. I think Leghorn fog horn was a large chicken that had a little tiny Hawk that would try to eat him but it was not intimidating because the hawk was a baby and Foghorn Leghorn was a big rooster. Leg horns are about 3 1/2 ft tall. So it was comical to see this little babyhawk not intimidating the rooster in any serious way. Moana's chicken seems to have cognitive and motor skills, handicapped disability problems and she loves the chicken and protects it. The one argument you make about whether you choose a handicapped person over a dog can lead to another question of: Are babies as cognitive as adults or dogs? Wouldn't you certainly choose the baby over the dog? It reminds me of the movie Sophie's Choice set in Nazi Germany and Sophie having to choose between her son and her daughter's life. Her son was older but blond. Her daughter dark haired. What about saying don't act like a baby or a drunk or a cringey person? Not the most descriptive way to relate a point because it is still name calling. Wiled goose chase. Double entendre like Wile E coyote as cold and calculating. Here is a joke people think has little to no meaning. Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side. What is the other side? A belief in the afterlife. Also a double entendre.

But i don't believe it would be because society will become more vegan-like. Getting stranded or lost and hunting for survival in the wild is 1 of many game/story genres. Just like games where you brutally kill ppl for whatever reason is a game/story genre. NOT saying having a distaste for those kinds of games is wrong, and no one should complain. I'm just saying, i doubt survival games with hunting will fall out of favor because veganism will be common. That being said, it would be kinda interesting to be able to have a vegen style playing option in a game. Mix things up a bit why not?

    Theres actually a lot of interesting research on the interaction betwee our language and our behaviour/thoughts/opinions. For example in the linguistics space, there is the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis which talks about how the language we use has a direct impact on our opinions and perspectives (there should be lots of articles/experiments about this!) and in the behaviour analytic world there is decades of research discussing "private events" such as internal thoughts, rules and language, and how this impacts our external behaviour.
    I am in no way agreeing with PETA here - just think the intersection between language and our perspectives & behaviour is very interesting, and relevant to many vegan conversations! Stephen Pinker has a lot of interesting books/articles/talks regarding language and its relationship with cognition and behaviour too.

    Isn't PETA's whole thing just Peter Singer's stance taken to its logical end? Like, based on their beliefs, of course this tweet makes sense. Like this is straight out of Animal Liberation. Not saying Singer is right at all, but PETA seems to be consistently in support of his views, possibly a bit more Arne Næss-ian

    • @RajaDushman

      Ok. Can't say this enough, but Peter Singer's argument is literally that the ethical distinction between races is the same as the ethical distinction between species: complete arbitrary. PETA's whole thing is this argument. Like. They aren't making false equivalences unless we argue against Singer, and he's super wrong. Might want to mention Singer to the audience to AT THE MINIMUM actually show where PETA is coming from.

    The one animal word association I hate is calling people “sheep”.
    Not because I find the “supremacist language” offensive, but because it’s so tired and overused, just when someone disagrees with the name-caller.
    Also, because I come from the Faroe Islands, which is hypothesized to literally mean “sheep islands”, so I know more about sheep than the average person. 😂 The only legal sheep on the islands is the native breed, and it has almost no flocking instinct. It has been naturally bred out of them, because they have no natural predators there and because of scarcity of food in the area, so the flock spreads out for them to graze alone, or in small family groups.

    Swayze your argument at the beginning, and 1:15 specifically, makes no sense. Thinking other animals are as important as humans obviously doesn't mean that you would let a billion humans die instead of a worm. I'm pretty sure you think all humans have the same value but that doesn't mean you'd let a billion humans die instead of one human.
    To the larger argument, if you believe animals are not as valuable as humans based on their lower levels of sentience, intelligence, etc then how do you get around devaluing a huge percentage of humans? Not everyone has the same level of those qualities. Your kids for instance apparently aren't worth as much as most other humans based on your argument.
