The rather clumsily named XDR-P1DBP has been out since 2015 but has established itself as a tiny yet capable DAB+ radio. For many, a radio of this type will no longer have a place in their life. Why do you need a radio when you can happily stream radio on your phone? I agree, however, don't underestimate the usefulness of having a portable radio around the house. Sometimes it's better to keep things simple.
I have a nostalgic place in my heart for these beautifully designed Sony radios that have current technology but still carry the functional and simple look that Sony products had in the 1990s. A wonderful amber lit LCD and a black matt plastic with an old skool speaker grill.
It's such a nice looking bit of kit and works well too. I couldn't resist buying one to show on the channel.

I have P1DBP too, and it is amazing. The digital amp and the good quality (albeit small) speaker give it a much more bigger sound than you would expect. The ferrite cores in the USB cable look weird, but are essential to suppress the noise coming from the switching power supply (phone charger) you will probably connect it to charge. Makes no difference if you charge it only when off, but when playing a station the interference would be very noticeable (you can try it). Sony engineers know their stuff!
Having just lived through a three-day power cut and impassable roads thanks to Storm Arwen, I promise you that a battery operated radio is absolutely not redundant in the 21st century. In fact this last few days have taught me just how useless my smartphone and other power-hungry, internet-dependent tech really is.
No better testimonial than that. I hope all is well.
Also when you start listening every morning the breakfast shows with your phone (via streaming), as you said, a bit of your battery freshly recharged over night has already passed out within just a couple of minutes. Radio's prevent that by using an object completely dedicated to it
Sadly DAB radios will be bad for those too .
Most run on build in battery that can run them a day . . . so most likely only half or lower when one actually gets a outage .
Think some old simple battery FM radio will do the best in such times
I own this little radio for a few years now and fortunately never got any issues with the power button. I remember when I was in university dorms in northern Brittany, France, I was able to receive British dab radios when I put it on the border of my window with its antenna fully deployed. I'm still very happy with this radio and still use it on a weekly basis. :)
This radio clearly has a lot of love based on the comments in this video. Although smartphone listening is clearly convenient and easier for most, it's nice to see passion for a unit like this.

Perfect radio for outdoor activities and hiking. I always bring it with me on trips :)
You can charge with any standard micro-USB cable, but if you intend to listen while charging, you will get lots of digital interference from the USB interface, UNLESS you use the supplied cable with the twin ferrite cores. Sony really has good engineers who understand RF.
It's a lovely quality product which gives you that feeling that Sony is something unique as it often has been, extremely good sound for the size.
I use this regularly on overnight hiking/kayaking trips etc. where my phone is packed away in a waterproof bag for emergency use only. I'd have preferred it had replaceable AA batteries instead .. but overall a nice compact radio.

Great radio , good. Sounds . I have one for 3 years, I had a few digital radio over the years , great for camping and cycling. Drop it a few times , very durable and strong, No battery issues , Only thing which is missing is blue tooth.

Yes, there are DAB+ stations in the UK.
I got a similar August DAB+ radio. The Sony is certainly nicer, but at only over twice the price.
What model
It is a great little DAB radio. An issue others have with the radio, me included, is sometimes it will not turn on and the only option is to reset the radio with a paperclip. Annoying. Just a shame that DAB is so messed up in this country. A case of quantity over quality. So many stations have to use appallingly low bit rates. Makes a mockery of having a nice speaker. Nice upload.
Thanks for the info. I haven't had that happen yet but I have only used it for a few hours so far! Yes, DAB implementation in the UK is farcical. Everything has to come down to money so quality and good use of spectrum will never factor while someone can make more money by squeezing in more pointless stations.
@@tdcattech I think a few are on 32 kbps! And people who aren't too technical hear all the fanfare about DAB and then find it sounds far worse than FM. They of course blame the DAB radio.
This is an ideal travel radio. I carry mine in an Eva cars for protection. Manage to pick up dab channels in deep valleys where the mobile signal and FM have been lost. Never had an issue with the power switch.... Guess I'm just lucky. I can see the reasoning behind using such a switch to avoid accidental turn on.. However it could be made more robust I'm sure.

I have a problem with the power button the button flies left and right. It does not return to the center after being moved to the side. Could someone help me?
Loooks like the tuning on FM is nearly unusable. But since smart phones are removing radio, and being able to point the antenna in a fixed direction unlike the h/p cable, gives a purpose for a pocket radio.
Can we also receive stations from other countries with DAB?

Do I need special headphones for this radio. Senior lady here and I used another pair I have but had to have up to full volume before I could hear anything on them. Do not want to use them if have to be on full volume all the time.
Not really. Any larger or older headphones might not be suitable as the unit may not have enough power for them but most recent headphones in the sub £80 category will be fine. 👍🏻

40cm is actually a bit longer than 1/4 wavelength on 220 - 230MHz which is used. 😉

why does what it looks like, come before what it sounds like, and if there are any things what are not good about it, depends on your priorities, I saw a lovely looking car with square wheels. I am, sure looks matter, but not first.

RRP is £79.99 GBP. As for India, you could just look on Amazon.
SONY did not detach the speaker from the main Tuner. That would have been a stunning small pocket DAB+ Radio on headphones extending play for weeks. Click on the speaker or have it as a Bluetooth speaker somewhere else in the room or your car. Having 2 detachable speakers like that on both sides would have been even more impressive. I hope SONY continues their efforts on DAB+ as they did with MINIDISC. Smaller and smaller including recording on flash MicroSD Card, Playback of MP3 and have a stereo microphone setup while they are at it, right?
It's DAB mate, not HiFi. FM stereo wipes the floor with DAB. I mostly use DAB as well!
You need to fully extend the aerial.
Small,compact, quite good sound....even was thinking to buy it.But later realized that there is no USB or SD card mp3player or AUX or Bluetooth...ať least one of those options should be available. Pitty it isn't.
Btw. IS there any portable Sony radio ((FM and DAB+) with some options mentioned above?
The XDR-S61D has AUX in but that's about it, I think.

How many prices
IMHO only one thing wrong... I'd much prefer it to use AAA instead. Much more convinient on the go and in emergencies and rechargeable don't cost a fortune - they could even build in a slower charger easily. LiIon will die and while I do have the skills to change it - granted it hasn't swollen and destroyed something - finding good replacements pouch cells of right size can be challenging and you often has to go on compromize with quality. Using original cells often isn't an option as they're just as old as the ones you're replacing.

I bought one of these radios, which admittedly is very good except for the design fault of its power switch which is notorious for failing. This happened to mine. Luckily I was able to return it for a full refund but despite numerous reports of the failure of this switch Sony make no changes. Hence despite its good performance I could not recommend it.
I know what you mean. You’d think that it would be in the power of Sony to address this problem given the negative feedback. Obviously not everyone has this failure but it is *the* point of failure on the radio.

As it's a DAB radio, it won't work with the NRSC-5 standard in the US but I'm guessing you meant why don't they do a US HD Radio version of this? It looks like Sony doesn't do any digital radio in that standard. No idea why or why I couldn't find it. Odd.

Streaming with a snart-phone can actually be lossless, and high quality. All depending on the whatever it is streaming service you're using of course.
Why doesn't it have AM radio reception? In a crisis situation, like war, which seems to be going on now, AM radio is the only thing that will work.
The UK is small enough to be fully covered by FM, AM is not needed for emergency radio broadcasting here, this isn't the US.
If you want a decent AM capable radio get one of the many with shortwave, plenty of those about.

This and the JBL Tuner 2 are my fav small radio's, own both. The JBL has more oomph so handles music better, yet for weight and portability the Sony is better.
The JBL is supposed to sound amazing.
@@tdcattech The JBL sounds a bit muffled at low volume, yet on medium volume the highs kick in to my likings. Another interesting radio is the Geneva Touring S, classy looks and quality built so it seems. Haven't tried or even seen one in real life yet.

All it lacks is a wake-up alarm,
A typical radio demonstration includes letting it play some audio which you barely did!
I would need to avoid any copyright issues which is impossible to do on a radio that is just a radio and has no way of getting other audio into it like Bluetooth or Aux.

It has no alarm, even cheaper radios have alarms, sony should of built an alarm into it.
If you need an alarm clock you would be getting a bedside alarm clock radio, which would have the features of an alarm clock. The buttons too.
Switch is a botch. After approximately 1 year stopped to work. It is blocking. Really, really, poor quality. It is a common problem with this radio.
Iv bought Sony's my whole life but nolonger there's nothing inside them cheep materials and a complete rip of .
