Another great video. Ive just read through Barrowmaze not played or run but it seems a bit one dimensional to me with nearly all encounters consisting of undead or death cultists. I truly do love all Loki's Lair videos!
At the start I started to suspect it but wasn't fully sure. As soon as you mentioned the undead dragon I knew for sure. The barrow maze is the lost dungeon of Iniarv and Ebondeath. This is the missing story of the Mere of Dead Men. Definitely buying this one.
Just checking this out now, I love the look of his books and the feel only thing is it is insanly! expensive to print it off and the paper quailty isnt good. If I was to get it I would get the PDF and print it off and have it bound it would be cheaper with heavier paper. But it looks and sounds so damn good watched so much on it ha.
Great deep dive! I have seen multiple reviews of Barrowmaze but I really benefitted from your take and what you focused on! I have loved the idea of Barrowmaze and it was one of my first explorations into OSR space. Unfortunately, I bought the 5e version which I don't want to use, I agree that it doesn't jive with the 5e expectations. I'd love to have a long running campaign but my current group is pretty settled into 5e.
Thanks. Glad you liked the video. If you ever decide to run it, consider switching to Shadowdark for it. It’s not much different from 5e but fits the vibe and principles of the barrowmaze.

Great Review and his "Designing Hex Towns" is astonishing helpful to creat quick settlements. I love all Loki's Lair videos! And want to see more of them.
I would like to borrow a few things from it, but use the sandbox setting I am working on for a possible Shadowdark campaign. The random crypt generator is cool. The new spells and magic items seem neat, and the concept of a huge maze of tunnels is cool too.
Been running a Shadowdark version of Barrowmaze, Dwarrowdeep, Caves of Archaia, and Highfell across four different campaign groups mashed into the the same world for close to 11 months now, and it has been a blast. I think Barrowmaze has become a bit of a meme, it's definitely a lot of extra work for a GM and there is a lot to fill-in, and every party greatly prefers Caverns of Archaia and Highfell... so, now Highfell is hovering over the Sunken City of Archia :) If you're running it for Shadowdark, perhaps convert the high payouts of gold to silver. some corners have a sack of 500 gold, and that's easy enough to convert to silver (50gp value). While making finding actual gold pieces a bit more rare. If I were to start Barrowmaze again, I would make it a point crawl and disregard the hexcrawl. Helix is a bit of a yawn without a flexible and creative GM and players who wish to get involved in politics. HHR Huffinpuff was indeed a fun NPC to play. Thee reason for the point crawl, is to speed up the constant trip back and forth from the Barrowmaze to Helix. One could just vignette back and forth to keep the gang dungeon delving and exploring the mounds. That being said. The Barrowmoore has some very interesting mounds that can be used as stand alone adventure locations. This is Gillespie's first megadungeon, it's not the greatest, it's still fun, but his later books are much much better and far more diverse.
Great video, thanks. Do you ever play this with OSE, DCC or some other OSR system, or are you just playing 5e? Also, any tips for playing this solo with OSE?
