Yo! I actually know why we make the Khobar. Most of the North Indians in Fiji are from Mithila, Awadh, Braj in UP. There’s a specific tradition in Mithila Culture where the bride and grooms sisters and female friends will paint the couples room with murals of Radha/Krishna, Shiva/Parvati, Ram/Sita. The room and the art itself were both called khobar. This was only found out after the Nepal Earthquake in 2012 when people were doing clean-up in and around Mithila and it was “discovered”. Otherwise it was almost always completely hidden. It’s amazing how so many generations later we keep the tradition going.

Looks quite similar to a Mauritian Hindu wedding. In Mauritius it is a 4 day affair with Friday night being Geet Gawai where the ladies sing Bhojpuri folk songs and dance. Saturday night is Haldi, usually following by whole night dancing. Sunday around noon is the Tilak and wedding. Monday is Chawtari where we have non-veg food with a french style wedding reception. The Maurtians are mostly from the Bhojpuri speaking eastern UP / Western Bihar region. The old. Bhojpuri I spoke as a child veers more towards the Awadhi. The Fijians seem to be a mix from all the regions of UP.

High respect to all Indo Fijian for preserving all Indian customs,traditions and ritual for so long of their migration from their mainland India.All credit goes to to their forefathers who were of great soul ,who passed to their next generation in an adverse conditions.
During British Raj it is not only Fiji but all the Indians were exploited and forced to depart to Caribbean islands.But thanks to them,they are living with their Indian culture.
