    Stephen, forcing the man with missing limbs into retirement could get you into trouble with the diversity and equity brigade! The rail cam night shots are terrific. The canal section is looking so good now with the trees etc.

      Unfortunately, Chris, the late 1940s were less enlightened times, although the railway company have given him a pension of half a guinea a week so he's quite content (apart from the fact he is missing a forearm and foreleg of course). I wasn't sure the nighttime footage would come out and I was so pleased when it did. The trees really do make a difference (although I have to remember that they are there and not keep biffing them when I am working near them). The canal scene is going to look good I think once I get it all done. Stephen

    My goodness, it's really coming along nicely and I really like the addition of the cattle loading dock. I'm very much looking forward to MRS on Friday and having the opportunity to meet up with both yourself and Euan.

    Hi Stephen - the layout looks complete😊. Loving the canal area and the tracks going into the tunnels. Two very enjoyable running sessions. You should be rightly proud of all the work you've done on the layout. Yes MRS on Friday 😊. I'll send a PM re meeting if that's okay. Cheers Euan

      Hi Euan. It does look whole now but so much detail to be done - that is without me going to back to earlier sections. I was very pleased when I saw the footage from the 'nighttime' running I wasn't sure it would come out. Happy for you to PM about meeting it up. See you next Friday. Stephen

    Hi Stephen, this layout is really looking good, a lot of hard work and research. Well done, I’m noticing that in some respects, the closer you get to completion of the layout, the further you have to go. Must must feel a great sense of accomplishment, take care. Phil

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks very much Phil. I think you are right that as I was getting closer to having the structural work completed it seemed I had a lot still to do. It was a pleasant shock when I put the quarry face back into place after finishing the hillsides either side and there was the layout structurally finished. Still plenty to do scenically but it looks a finished layout. I still walk in the Mancave some mornings and I am surprised to see it all there. Stephen

    Looking good Stephen, I'm envious. Meanwhile, I noted your comments about 3.2 mm nut runners for the wonderful wagons, and in my search, I consulted my son-in-law, who said that's an imperial 1/8" and is gauged as 11 (bigger is smaller) but I've been very happy with the 10, because it's slightly slacker and easier to locate. I got an imperial flat spanner set from Squires, but having measured up those with the callipers, I discovered I already had some small imperial sockets, so I don't have a source for them. In use, I find the socket on it own is most useful, since too much much torque is fatal...

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  8 місяців тому

      Thanks Peter. It was so much easier with the right nut spinner. I had to ask PECO what size the nut is. It isn't surprising they chose an imperial size, given the kits were first made a long time ago. It is quite hard to get small size spanners in imperial measures at shows. I was very pleased once I got my 3.2 spinner. You are right about not over tightening. The kits also don't much care to have the nuts taken off once they have been put on either. The thread on the plastic is easily stripped. Stephen

    You've done well with painting the N guage figures, Stephen. I've bought some Laurel and Hardy 00 figures from Buggleskelly at the Doncaster show. Once painted, they will make an appearance on Dylington, and who knows after my grandson's last video with the stop motion animation. He might even make a little sketch with them. Once again, my grandson and I have enjoyed your video.....cheers James 🙂👍

      Thanks very much James. The Laurel and Hardy figures are very good; you will have fun painting them. I find painting figures therapeutic even though they can be tricky little devils to keep hold on. It's always nice when you sit back and have a little person in front of you. Stephen

      Thanks very much Chris. It rather took me back about four weeks ago when I put the quarry face into place and the whole section was complete. I've spent so long building the basic structure I wasn't quite ready to see a layout with no expose white foam on it. Your box of wonders continues to pay dividends. Stephen

    Hi Stephen, glad to see you back after the lurgy! You’ve been really busy, really like the scenery section near the tunnel and locke. I agree with yourself I would not put any more bushes and live with it and then add if decide you want more! Enjoyed the running sessions and it looks pretty punch finished now, I guess on to the finer detailing now I guess? Cheers Gary

      Thanks very much Gary. I was surprised how much I had completed when I started writing down what I needed to film. It is all now detailing work and there is plenty of that to do. I still can't get my head around the fact that the layout is essentially built. It's a very strange feeling. Stephen

    Hi Stephen, the signal man looks great and I loved the morcambe and wise figures how brilliant 😂😂. The transition in the running session from day to night using the tunnel was fantastic, the canal looks great and I really like the effect of the green canal water as it reminds me of some canals in Birmingham. The cattle dock looks great as does the wagon I can imagine the fiddly ness of that wagon but hats of to you it looks great. Hopefully I will see you at model rail Scotland. Happy modelling, Nat
    PS thanks for giving me something to watch in my break 😂 👍

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Nat. Im pleased to have helped filled your break. The figures are good. To be fair Morecambe and Wise are more identifiable in the larger scales. Eric's pipe really doesn't show in N scale, but I thought they would be a nice easter egg to place on the layout. I was pleased with the green effect especially as it is trapped in the layers of PVA. Looking forward to getting that done in the not too distant future

    Hi Stephen! Those little figures look great - well done with the painting! It's something that I've not tried yet, but I remember watching you paint a figure ages ago, and using a few choice words over how fiddly it was! Lol! Maybe the armless legless one could become a passenger in a coach? Loved the running shots in the dark! The work you've done around High Elven and the canal is really impressive and ties the whole area together! The PVA water experiment has been really interesting, and I quite like the green, although would still like it to be a little more reflective! Have a great time at MRS! I had planned to go, but it worked out a bit too expensive what with hotels and trains! All the best, Ian.

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi Ian. I get a lot of pleasure in painting despite the figures being fiddly. It's really nice as you see the plain figure come to life as you paint. The running shots at 'night' were an experiment, and I was so pleased when I saw the raw footage for the first time. High Elven still need quite a lot of detail - not least figures! - but it is starting to come together. The more I look at the green in the PVA the more I am coming around to the view that it may be just right. I can understand about cost for you of attending MRS. It's quite a trek whether by car or pubic transport. I going to the York show in April, and I may see if can get down for the new show at the NEC in November. If easyJet keep the 7am flight to Birmingham in next winter's schedule I can do Birmingham as a day trip! Stephen

    Hi Stephen, plenty covered in this episode. I must say your figure painting is exceptional, honestly they look brilliant and worthy of the cost of the ModelU Figures. I’ll be sending up around a 1000 figures at some point for painting, I’m sure you won’t mind…
    Everything else is really coming together nicely, the wood yard is looking really good and I do like that cattle dock, was it Manchester Models you said that makes them?
    The trees on the hillside look really nice and as much as the layout is nearly complete it’s all the lovely details I like seeing as they are introduced to the layout.
    Running sessions were really good, glad the lurgy is leaving you now, cheers for now Stephen, oh and thanks for the suggestion for another support for my bridge, John

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi John. Painting figures is very therapeutic and not as difficult to do as you might imagine. It's fiddly yes, but you can use colour to suggest something without needing a lot of detail. I recently painted some O gauge figures for a family member and I thought that would be so much easier. In one way it was being bigger but the level of detail you could see required some quite fine painting. It was MMR Models that made the cattle dock. They do a larger one, but I thought the single one fitted the size of the yard better. I am enjoying adding the detail, and, as ever, it is amazing how much difference a few small additions can make. Stephen

    Hi Stephen. Thanks for the heads-up on Buggleskelly's foray into N gauge; I have pre-ordered a rake of three for my layout. Nice work with the Modelu figures. The signal box has a "foot" surround and I wonder whether you will be removing or disguising it.

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  8 місяців тому

      Hi Paul. I’m glad buggleskelly has done something in N. If it goes well we might get the Jones the Butcher Railway Van too. The signal box is sitting on its concrete base which is an integral part of the kit. I haven’t completed the landscaping at that point of the depot yet. Stephen

    Hello there, everything is coming along nicely with the layout. Just an idea, but why not include a filming crew as a tip towards Railway Roundabout and one guy filming as a tip to Ivo Peters? I think they'd go well with the atmosphere.

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  8 місяців тому

      Hi Bob and thanks. I keep hoping that Oxford Diecast would make Ivo Peter Bentley in N scale (well any MkIV Bently would do because it could always be repainted). I'll take a look around for a filming crew because I like that idea. I could have them filming the Oh! Mr Porter group. It will getting a film crew for the right period that might be tricky, but it is amazing what is available. Stephen

    Hi Stephen - loved the rail cam footage - that is something I really would like to try on my layout just to see what the layout looks like from the driver’s perspective. I must look into purchasing the equipment one day. The figures like you said are very very good but a bit out of my spending budget I am afraid, but they are a very nice touch. I do like the canal pub, “The Golden Crown” - what make is it?
    Regards
    Steve

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  8 місяців тому

      Hi Steve. You will know that I didn't spend a lot of money to create railcam (you can see how I did it in video 27). I am very pleased with it and all I have had to do since I bought it was replace the rechargeable battery. I really pleased you like the pub. The Golden Perch is a scratch build of mine. It took quite a lot work and has an accurately modelled skittle alley in the back. I did show the build which ran over six videos 90 to 95. Stephen

    Always enjoy your updates! The figures came out very well indeed, especially given how small they are in N - I'm curious which specific paints you used on them?

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks and I'm pleased you enjoy them. I almost exclusively use Vallejo Model Color paints. Much to my surprise I have discovered that I have a good eye for mixing colours to achieve the desired colour I actually want. On the figures you saw I think all of them had colours that I had achieved by mixing other colours. If I am ever unsure all I have to do is to search in UA-cam 'how do I mix X colour in acrylic' and a video will appear. There is artist who helps new artists to learn how to mix colour through a youtube channel. An amazing resource. Stephen

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  8 місяців тому

      Hi Graham and thanks. I do use an LED light (in fact two sometimes). Generally, during the day, the natural light from the window is good enough for the iPhone. However if I have to be between the window and the thing I am filming (such as when I am working on the workbench) I use an adjustable brightness LED light on a stand. If I am filming on grey days or at night, or where I need good lighting, I have two lights to give an even lighting. I bought my lights six years ago and they are made by Neewer. I was going to give you the product numbers but I am not sure they are good value any longer. I spent about £50 to get two lights, two batteries, a battery charger, two stands, and two ball head connectors. I see on Amazon just a light, battery and charger is nearly £60. I have just googled 'best led light for filming video' and that gives some useful results. I suggest you do that too. That would allow you to choose what would be best for you. If you need any more help feel free to drop me an email to the address at the end of the video. I would be only too pleased to help. Stephen
