It gets foreshadowed earlier as well - in "The Room Where It Happens" (which ignites Burr's long-simmering resentment towards Hamilton), Hamilton tells Burr "I guess I'm gonna fin'ly have to listen to you/Talk less, smile more", and in "The Election Of 1800" (where Hamilton decisively turns against Burr), Burr tells Hamilton "I'm chasing what I want, and you know what?/I learned that from you".

You'll also realise that Eliza is the only character, of the main cast, that doesn't sing at a high speed - this is because she lived to an older age than any of the others...she had more time to tell her story.

Here are 10 fun facts about the lives of the characters:
    1. Lafayette named his only son after George Washington, Georges Washington de Lafayette.
    2. Hamilton was only 5’6”
    3. There were actually 13 Schuyler children not just the 3. Only 8 survived to adulthood several of which were boys.
    4. Lafayette was imprisoned for over 5 years in Austria during the French Revolution.
    5. Angelica was already married when they met Hamilton.
    6. Angelica and her husband hatched a successful escape plan to help Lafayette escape from prison, though he was quickly recaptured.
    7. At Phillips funeral it’s said that Hamilton was so distraught he had to have people physically hold him up to keep him from falling
    8. Peggy died in 1801 of a cold and Hamilton was the only person at her side when she died.
    9. The people in the Caribbean who collected money to send Hamilton to the colonies expected him to become a doctor and return to help them, but as we saw he didn’t do that.
    10. The ship that Hamilton was on when he came to the colonies caught fire during the voyage and was in flames when it arrived in the harbor.
BONUS fact: Aaron Burrs wife and daughter, both suffered tragic and premature deaths. His wife Theodosia Bartow Burr died from stomach cancer, in 1794 at the age 47. His daughter Theodosia Burr Alston was lost at sea in 1813 at the of 29. Burr was inconsolable.

So Eliza's orphanage still exists today as the org Graham Windham, which is now a family services agency in NYC. Phillipa Soo (the actress who plays Eliza) went and performed for some of the kids, and after she sang "when my time is up, have I done enough, will they tell my story?" the kids sang back to her, "Eliza, you have done enough!"
Anyway, every once in a while I'll remember that and make myself cry

A lot of people misunderstand the theater superstition referred to as the Macbeth curse. While inside a theater, one can say the character Macbeth's name, which Hamilton does in the letter to Angelica, but members of the cast of the play can't refer to the play by its name while they're within the walls of the theater.
I spent years in theater in NYC and it's a mild annoyance that people keep misstating this particular theater curse. An actor is allowed to tell others he's playing the role of Macbeth and he can be called Macbeth by his cast mates and the crew, but while in the theater no one can say they're in the play Macbeth or are crew members for the play Macbeth. It's the uttering of the play’s name aloud in a theater that supposedly triggers the bad luck.
While writing to Angelica, Hamilton was careful to not name the play. His words were, "My dearest, Angelica, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day. I trust you'll understand the reference to another Scottish tragedy without my having to name the play." The words 'tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow' are the beginnings of the second sentence of one of the most famous soliloquies in William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth. Lin very much followed the rules of the Macbeth superstition/curse. When he uttered the word Macbeth, he did so in reference to the character and not the play.
Hamilton's bad luck began when he decided to pursue his ambitions instead of settling into a good life with his wife. His inability to be satisfied with his life was his downfall.

We don’t actually know what her reaction was. She destroyed most of her own writing before she died. She helped physically write some of Alexander’s works when his hand would get tired. But she considered herself too uneducated in comparison to have written anything of importance.

There is one very good thing Burr did after the duel with Hamilton. He was still the Vice-President for a couple of years. He and Jefferson hated one another. But Burr was still in charge of the Senate as the Vice-President. Jefferson tried to impeach a Supreme Court justice because the justice's politics were different to Jefferson's. Burr made absolutely sure that could not happen and set the precedent that a sitting President could impeach a Supreme Court justice just because the justice didn't agree with him. And I think we can all agree that that is a VERY GOOD THING right now.

While Alexander's dueling advice to his son seems completely ridiculous to us, it *was* relevant and good advice for the time. Duels were at their core a dick-wagging contest, and most people didn't actually want to murder someone. Also I wish there were an easily-accessible recording of Come From Away, because it's criminally under-talked-about (came out the same year as Hamilton and suffered for it) and it's another musical that I think has broad appeal and could be appealing to people who don't usually like musicals.

I love the fact that Lin used the actual words of Washington's farewell address in this. They are so poignant.
I don't feel too bad for Burr - he lived on the infamy he got from the duel. He would say, "My dear friend Hamilton, whom I shot." He also tried to create his own country out of parts of the South and Texas (which was owned by Mexico) - which got him charged with treason.
The gasp is left up to the actress playing Eliza. It could be her seeing the audience and realizing the story is being told or it could be her last dying breath and seeing Alexander again.
This film was created out of 2 live performances and one with no audience to get the closeups. The person who popped his head out of the orchestra pit is Alex Lacamoire - Lin-Manuel Miranda's co-arranger for Hamilton. It's also normal for musicals to acknowledge the conductor at the end of the show because they're extremely important.

There are a lot of historical inaccuracies in this musical done for the sake of storytelling. For example, Anjelica was already married with a couple of kids when she met Hamilton, and she had brothers. And yes, Alex and Eliza had 8 kids, the last named after his oldest brother. They were also there at his bedside when he finally died.
By the way, when Philip was shot, Eliza was already wearing black because her sister, Peggy, died the same year. When they're introduced earlier in the musical, Burr names them in the order they die.

    • @anonnymouses7134
      @anonnymouses7134 4 роки тому +44

Then there’s the tidbit that Angelica Hamilton, second eldest of the children was driven mad by the death of her brother and receded into a childlike mind. She often spoke of her brother as if he were alive, even late in life, and would ask when he was coming home from boarding school. She was 17 when he passed and she passed at 73 years old.
It’s quite uptown was also inspired by witness accounts of the time, which described Alexander as literally collapsing of grief at the funeral and that they had never seen a family so deep in mourning.

For the record, Eliza and Alexander had 8 children of their own, and they also cared for the young daughter of a friend for a few years after the child was orphaned. Eliza also suffered at least one miscarriage. She did forgive Alexander's affair a couple years after the scandal when Philip almost died from typhoid, and they had two of their children after that. She always blamed President James Monroe as the one who actually leaked the information about the affair, and refused to talk to him even years later when he came to visit her to make amends. In interview, Pippa who played Eliza confirmed it's a combo of 2 theories. 1, Eliza gets to the end of her life and reacts to seeing her loved ones(including Hamilton) on the other side. 2, she is shown the theater audience for the first time, breaking the 4th wall, and is in awe at the realisation that so many years later...her story, and the story of what Hamilton did is still being told today. They made some of of impact in history. After we're gone, we continue to live on in our stories, so this play made me think about my own life too. As it says, we are part of history. And just a fun trivia fact: the orchestra is a 10-piece ensemble. Drums, bass guitar, all other guitars played by one person who switches (electric, acoustic, banjo etc.), a second "percussion" guy, 2 keyboard parts (1st keyboard is also the conductor you see taking the bow), and a "classical" string quartet (2 violins, viola, and cello). There's also a lot of "electronically programmed" moments and sound effects that are either controlled by the drummer or the percussionist, done by "hitting" some pad with their sticks. As a professional musician myself who has done his share of pit orchestra work, props to them. They're just as mad talented as the singers. That's the beauty of the theater and live performances, it's all raw energy in the moment. Living art that only exists because we make it so.

There’s rumors John Lauren’s and Hamilton we’re lovers and his marriage to Eliza was for societal norms purposes...
Anjelica and Hamilton’s letters were reversed in the play, Hamilton picked on Anjelicas grammar not the other way around.
Also the song Eliza and Philip sing together they always separate at 7,8,9 to go separate musical ways... when Philip dies they go their separate ways and Philip can’t sing past 6, and Eliza continues 7,8,9...7,8,9.... but they are separated. The same when Philip was shot at the count of 7 at the duel. Separating him from his mother forever. There’s a lot of meaning in every single bit of music. Lin-Manuel wrote with a purpose.

Duels of honour were highly regarded back then, if you weren't able to settle this through letters all you really had to do was show up, and a lot of young men would've felt like it was something they had to go. When you were there you could waste your shot or refuse to shoot, then they'd shake hands and go because by showing up you were demonstrating your willingness to defend your honour. Most of the duels that took place didn't even result in death, Hamilton had every reason to assume that this one wouldn't either.

There's a point where chat comments on the Scottish Play curse being broken -- but it doesn't apply to Hamilton because he doesn't count here (speaking as a theatre person myself) because he doesn't name the play. He specifically says "that other Scottish ..." whatever. Then of course he shortly after says "Macbeth" but he's naming the character not the play's title.
I mean, it's superstition and not exactly logical to begin with despite how ingrained it gets in theatre, but as long as you're referring to the person and not the title it doesn't matter. If you say the title in reference to the title though it's a problem. There's also an exception for performing the play in question; the title and introduction and such before each performance, the programmes given out for the show, and the name repeatedly being said during the show are all fine. You can't put on the show without naming the show, and even then you're mostly naming the character and not the play. Cast and crew behind the scenes and during rehearsal still never name the production, they say "That Scottish Play" or some variation thereof.

According to Lin and Thomas Kail (Director of Hamilton), the gasp is dependent on who plays Eliza that night. Each actress has a different understanding of what that gasp means and they leave it to them on how they play that out. Philippa Soo (Eliza in this run), might play it as surprise. While Julia K. Harriman (another Eliza) might do it differently. We never really know.
Take note though. At that last turn of Lin and Philippa in the musical, Eliza doesn't react as if she sees her husband. She was quite formal when she sees Lin. Some theories say that Eliza sees Lin, the playwright and not Hamilton, her husband. This is especially evident when Lin actually says "Hi" to her with a smile. Then, they meet in the middle, Eliza cautiously takes Lin's hand, and then he leads her to the audience where he shows her that Hamilton's story is being told and is being heard by hundreds of people.
Again, that's one theory. I really like it though.

I also love how "The Room Where it Happens" has so many different meanings, both for the show and in general. For the show, it is about Burr, and ambition, and jealousy, and that big decisions are being made, but we are kept away from what's important. In general, it resonates more with how history is made, which is a huuuge theme in Hamilton ! History, legacy, lasting political changes... People are talking, writing and singing about it. Hamilton is basically telling a part of history. But we'll never truly know what happened or how it happened. Historians only have documents, assumptions, impressions, but everything we know about history is because of reconstitution. We will never know what happened (or what is happening, because that idea is still relevant today) especially when it comes to politics. So, imo, Burr has a dual role in this song: he is himself (ambition, jealousy), but also us, the audience. He doesn't know what happened, he couldn't be there. But that's still pretty ironic because he is... well, a part of history as well.
(A lenghty and pretty confusing comment but it is 2am here so... I guess I was inspired)

The financial system he designed for the US was a large reason why we, as a country, have survived. Our commercial economy came about because of him. If it'd been up to Jefferson then we would have been a mostly land and agrarian-based economy, few banks (unregulated) and little manufacturing trade. It's a "grateful" gasp Eliza does at the end. it's like she breaks the 4th wall and realizes that us (the audience) is watching her "tell Alexander's story". Like, after all those years, it's still reaching us today in 2020. And she's overcome with emotion and gratitude.

The way Leslie Odom slightly stumbles from the shock after losing is phenomenal. It's the smallest of things that makes it huge.

who doesn't sob their heart out during Burn or when Philip dies and later when Eliza takes Alexander's hand and he breaks down? Just typing that sentence made me tear up.

The children in order were Philip, Angelica, Alexander, James, John, William, Elizabeth, and Philip II, the one she was pregnant with at the time.

I highly recommend the biography that inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda to write this over a period of 7 years. It’s an easy and engaging read. So is the biography the author wrote on Washington. There are so many details that will blow your mind. It actually makes it even more amazing that Lin was able to thin it down to 2 hours 40 minutes.

The Real RenRen It’s Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. I actually just bought the unabridged audiobook of George Washington by Ron Chernow. He’s very good at biographies, they’re not boring at all, and the audiobooks are quite nice, actually. I usually struggle to pay attention if I’m not the one reading it, but these audiobooks keep your attention. You can see why Lin-Manuel Miranda was immediately drawn in, even by accident. I hope you give them a chance.

This is the Eliza appreciation we deserve, let's be honest.
