Yeah, I don’t get the dislike for this one at all after the reaction. I always enjoy watching this episode for its laid back, fun atmosphere, and giving the captain a different love interest and a fun adventure. I literally have almost no issues with the episode. Even the way Vash comes on to Picard is meant to look a bit forced and honey as she is trying to play him, but also mildly interested in him, and you can never tell for sure, which may be one reason Picard is almost interested too. This episode for me is like watching Golden Girls reruns. Similar time period of filming, similar color tones, relaxing atmosphere, low stakes fun. I can put it on in the background if it’s on streaming or tv and enjoy it. Nothing more, nothing less. @@makasete30 Fan favourite? I’m genuinely surprised to hear that. This always struck me as one of the very obvious episodes the writers put out to get Patrick Stewart off their backs - as the series progressed he was always on at them to have Picard do more ‘fucking and fighting.’ See also the episode that’s basically Die Hard but set on the Enterprise.
Interesting ...like most people commenting, I'm a bit surprised you two disliked this episode and disliked it so intensely. When I watched the opening, where you were dissing certain episodes, I thought to myself, "Oh no, not a good sign." Well, like you two have always said, everybody's tastes are different and those tastes should be tolerated, if not respected. See you next episode. ❤✌
Huh, I wouldn't say it's my favourite, but I do quite enjoy this. The plot is silly, but that's set up pretty heavily. But okay, I find the Vash character kind of charming. If you don't, it won't work. But speaking of how they feel about guest characters, let's see what happens in the next episode
It’s clear an episode with humor tone they don’t like. The time travel and those aliens isn’t the story here, it’s just what is used to move the story.
Remember they hated the fifth element and wouldn’t watch more than the pilot of the expanse. I watch them because they actually have a really good and analytical look at most of Star Trek. But when they hate something they just shut down
Hate to be that guy, but no they couldn't just go back and take it before Vash because they only know where it is because of Vash if they take it before she finds it then she never finds it and they never know where it was so it's a paradox.
Lol! I *love* this episode. I think Patrick Stewart does a great job of showing Picard's struggle to let down his guard a little..and I really like Vash. That said, never apologize for your honesty. You gentlemen are NOT the type that use "honesty" as a code word for "thoughtless and mean". Your honesty is sincere. That's why I enjoy your Trek videos. Your BSG eppys are D tier for me, so we're square ;)
This Episode is very "fun" and its a change of pace from the core of what the show is. I thought Picard and Vash's chemistry was pretty decent, the acting of Sulvak I thought was pretty good, mostly the way his lines were delivered. I think this is a good episode, not the best, but dont be surprised to see some of these characters again and this episode referenced sometime.
I always thought the scene at the end with the Ferengi still digging away madly looking for the Tox-utat (or however you spell it) was pretty funny! For all we know he may still be there to this day looking for it! inside of a really, really big hole!
It's not my favorite episode by any stretch, but it is an important episode. It's like Thor: The Dark World. It's not great at the time, but you appreciate it down the line.
Alex: "I guess Patrick Stewart by himself is not enough when the writing and the direction doesn't serve him well at all." Well that's true for literally every actor. But soon enough you're going to see exactly how good he can get on his own when the writing is GOOD.
Every season has its good and bad episodes. Its very clear that the writers started getting things figured out around season three, but that doesn't mean that seasons 1 and 2 didn't have some bangers while the other seasons had some some episodes completely miss. For instance, my two most favorite episodes in TNG take place in season 5, but there are some episodes in season 5 you couldn't pay me to sit through again.
What always made me laugh about this episode is that Picard is annoyed the whole time but if he were experiencing this as a holodeck program he would have had the time of his life.
I will say it, having seen almost the entire run of all of Star Trek for over forty years. There is no way that this Ferengi is worse than their introduction in the last outpost. Not even in the same Galaxy of comparison. I can’t take that serious. Especially over 30 years of watching these two episodes, as well as so many others, dozens and dozens of times as they come on tv or streaming. I can’t follow that logic in any way. Go back and watch the last outpost at your convenience, and then go forward and watch the entirety of Star Trek involving Ferengi, and get back to us with that comparison please. Someone needs a snickers bar today. 😅
This is a famous episode. Not infamous. Notable for Patrick Stewart getting his actual girlfriend a role as his love interest on TNG followed by a long engagement. as well as setting up storylines like VASH AND PICARD HAVE HOT CHEMISTRY and Vorgon Conclusions.
Doctor Who once dismissed the question about why time-travelers cannot keep trying again in the same time period, in a throwaway line about the 'Blinovitch Limitation Effect', which is technobabble for 'because we say so.'
This is the final episode where Dennis McCarthy (the composer) uses his “Picard Theme”, based on his rejected theme music for the show. It appears a lot in these early seasons, but Rick Berman told him to stop using it around this time.
I never can tell what you guys are going to like. I reckon this is a fun romp that allows the normally stuffy Picard a chance to let his hair down. Figuratively of course 😂. I thought you'd like it because I do. Couple your dislike for this with Deja Q and I'm starting to worry about you!! 😜
I would in no way say this is my favorite episode, but I've always thought of it a nice break for the normal kinda of episodes. Overall, in my opinion, nothing great, but nice, fun entery in the series.
A fun light hearted breather episode. Attention startrek passengers, buckle up, we about to expect top tier turbulence ahead. Restock the ice , eye poppin season 3, Lets Goooooo!!🎉
Every Trekkie should display one in their home. If they ever meet somebody of the opposite sex who actually knows what it is, you know you're a good match.
IMO, I can understand people liking or not liking this one. It's an episode that lives or dies on how much you want to see Picard letting his hair down and having an adventure on his own. I don't mind Sovak being an annoying creep because that's what he is there for. I also don't mind the Vash/Picard ship so much because I like Vash and Picard is first drawn in by the mystery, not because they have instant chemistry. Surprised you guys hate Vash and the episode so much, but I get it if you don't think it is as good as the last 5. Hope you like the next 7 better. Engage!
What i liked about this is that everyone's idea of the kind of vacation that pucard would enjoy isn't the type of vacation he really enjoys... including picsrd. He thinks he wants a quiet one reading, but what he really wants is an adventure with a mystery. And Vash because she's not the type of person he usually likes.
I don't love this episode, but I don't hate it, either. It's certainly not in my bottom 20 (or top 20, either). It's just a fun episode and I LOVE Vash, and I do think they had a chemistry together.
hahahaha they HATED VASH!!. she's like picard's 4th best love interest in the whole franchise. the best line of this episode is picard saying "i wouldnt go that far", after the suggestion "someone you love".
Great episode. Perfect for the time referencing romancing the stone. Also really marks the transition from early TNG wooden Picard to the Picard we get to know from a full watch. It’s always interesting to see people going through it now for the first time because they get really attached to kid hating, wooden, gene roddenbery Picard. rather than where he ends up. It makes sense that this would seem out of character from a linear watch
First, I'm not someone who gets all butt-hurt if you disagree with me about a tv show/movie, but... I kinda liked this one! To be clear, it's not in my top 10 for the season, but I thought it was fun. I liked Vash, and the cheesy Ferengi. I had no problem with their chemistry and thought she might be a fun recurring character. Yeah, I know she's no Beverly Crusher, but I liked her. In fairness, the overall idea was decent, but it definitely fell apart towards the end. But it wasn't enough for me to dislike the episode.
Harsh to say this Ferengi is as bad as the ones from The Last Outpost. He was greedy, devious, and silly, which have become the defining characteristics of the Ferengi. Those first 3 Ferengi were just something else.
I enjoy this Ferengi quite a bit, and feel he plays his role perfectly, as the Ferengi are being developed. There are so many different species in Star Trek, especially to come in the future as the different series expand, and the Ferengi really grow into their particular roles. If they don’t like this guy here, I wonder how they will do with future one off ferengi’s that have similar peculiarities. I guess we will find out very sooner than later!
Yep, for anyone who’s watched Star Trek long enough, it’s hard to even consider what we got in the last outpost as Ferengi. So much evolution from then to now and well beyond to DS9. We almost have to jump through a number of mental hoops to explain away the Ferengi in the last outpost, to what they become here and later on. And as people have said many times already, what’s so ironic is that one of those first three Ferengi actors in the last outpost with their horrible introduction, actually goes on to become the main Ferengi actor and play the most notable long running Ferengi in the current history of Star Trek. Quite ironic, not to mention that future character’s relationship to the actor playing Sovak here and any other characters that actor might play later…
The hoverball girl is one of my favorites from all of Star Trek. Definitely in the Top Ten and occasionally in the Top Five depending on the mood that day. Oh, the episode? It's a good one. Not great but it is good.

L O L. 😂 People’re entitled to their differing opinions on shows, franchises, and particular episodes! That’s just how entertainment and fiction work. There are episodes I just thought were meh or overrated that I remembered you guys seeming to love. I think a good part of why I enjoy this story is not only do I find it funny, but I precisely don’t need to take it or the ending seriously. It’s a break from a run of extremely high stakes drama, a personal vacation that isn’t quite that, except for someone like Picard. Kinduva silly holodeck side adventure for just him, but on an actual alien planet that’s functionally a resort. This is ultimately how the Ferengi always are: a not really scary antagonist, which probably is what made the writers fit them in here. I am kinda curious now if you guys have ever reacted to any episode very differently from each other..
I quite like this one. It had pacing issues and some of it didn't pay off with the time travel. But the character stuff, especially in the first half, made up for it for me. To me it felt like while they both were flirty, they both kept acting in their own interest, using the starting relationship to their advantage. Which is why we don't fully buy into their romance. At this point I wasn't a big fan of the Ferengi, that didn't change here. Honestly, I didn't start enjoying the Ferengi until watching Lower Decks and DS9.
I have a feeling that after you're done with TNG, and go and do a rewatch/reassessment of a few episodes like you did with TOS, this is one you'll end up liking more.
I sort of predicted your reaction, based on your opinions about Deja Q. While Deja Q is significantly better to me, I've always really enjoyed Captain's Holiday - and never took it as some kind of serious storytelling moment in Trek history. Simply an upfront sidestep for some levity and mild character support/building. I don't know that I would consider this a "comedy" episode - but more of a light-hearted adventure with wonderful moments from Picard and Riker. I don't have a problem with the mischievous romantic interest, and I don't think it's out of character for Picard to have a little fun here and there. I like Vash quite a bit - and I think she pulls off the role of selfish but endearing quite effectively. If you've paid attention from the beginning of TNG, you should have picked up on the fact that Picard used to be quite the ladies man back in the day (it's well established at this point in S3, I think) - and in this episode he opted to have a little fun as he deceived her with a clean conscience - as he was already on to her type and most likely knew what to expect from her. Just two people enjoying themselves during a mission of importance to both of them. Your dislike is obviously fine - but your reaction is a little over-the-top and, as such, comes off as emotionally biased. I could make some easy guesses as to why, but I'll spare you :) Anyway, it's nice to see a pattern forming - which will make it easier to brace for certain upcoming episodes! I can think of at least a couple of pure "comedy" episodes coming quite a bit later on.
@@targetaudience Definitely not the pinnacle league where A Matter of Perspective ranks first ;) j/k - I appreciate your passion. It's always more interesting when there are emotions involved. You shed a tear for Data and his daughter - which was touching. Having a strong reaction against Captain's Holiday of all episodes is not only unusual, but also refreshingly unsubstantiated by anything even approaching an objective argument in your video - which tells me something of the source of it all. It's all good :)
This was the first episode of STNG I ever saw. I was visiting a friend and he was a fan , I didn't have Cable where I lived at the time. I hated it. That’s like me and new BSG reboot series. I loved the original BSG but was not excited for the reboot. Thought it would be trash. Female Strabuck, I was thinking? 😂 Skipped the miniseries and season one, and somehow watched a few minutes twice of some season 2 stuff that was so far into the plot and an unrecognizable mini arc that I didn’t even know what I was arching and turned it off. Only months later did I catch a miniseries and season 1-2 recap special on sci-fi channel and rewatched it several times, like a one hour minus commercials recap episode of all of the miniseries, season 1 and 2 to get new people into the show before season 3 hit later that month. Well, that recap special got me totally hooked and I was able to jump into the series there with season 3 while also going back to the miniseries and seasons 1-2 to see what I missed and get forever hooked. What a weird beginning and journey that was.
@@Bagofsoup Its funny the same thing happened to my friend with bsg. He literally watched the most boring episode and he was done, now he cant stop talking about it.
It's good to have a fun episode. My hot take: I like this one more than Allegiance. I remember when I was a kid and I first saw this one and I thought it was really cool to see Capt. Picard enjoying himself
Pay attention to the background aliens in TNG crowd scenes. A lot of times they will "recycle" alien races that we've seen in previous episodes. For example, you're correct that the first scene includes an Antican from "Lonely Among Us."
Completely flabbergasted by this reaction. This is a lovely episode, great chemistry between Picatd and Vash, a great devious Ferengi, time travel, great jokes. If I feel in rhe mood for an undemanding, funny, stylish 45 minutes of TNG, I'll watch The Royale or Captain's Holiday. Wow.🤔
Hot opener with an overbooked finish is how I would describe this episode. The Riker stuff, Crusher convincing Picard, Troi using her Mom, Picard when he is being a jerk is all pretty great. Vash/Vosh, however it's spelled, a lot of people like but I really don't for some reason. It's a fun episode but honestly a throwaway that doesn't really amount to much. I basically agree with you. I think a lot of people do like this episode just because it's rare to see Picard outside of the captain on the bridge role.
Not one of the best LOL but my FAVORITE moment is Picard taking James Joyce's "Ulysses" (one of the most difficult works of literature ever written) with him on holiday and telling Riker: "some light reading in case I get bored."
It was Sir Patrick Stewart himself who asked the writers to come up with a story of someone coming in and sweeping him off his feet. If this is how their real life chemistry was you may have wanted to turn and look away because they ended up dating in real life and came extremely close to getting married.
I think it does seem to misunderstand picard at this point in the series. But the picard that loves swashbuckling adventures has kind of always been there, he loves old books, horse riding in the holideck, dixon hills stories. In that way an indiana jones Adventure with a beautiful woman is right up his alley, her adventurous spirit is exactly his type. You're going to get more of this type of picard going forward. I like to think of it as learning more about whats going on inside of him. Hes stoic on the outside but an adventure seeking kid on the inside.
The funny thing is although I didn't buy into the chemistry between Jean Luc Picard and Vash when this aired, Patrick Stewart and the actress who played Vash, Jennifer Hetrick, did date and were engaged for a time after this episode.
Once you get through all those boring scenes in the beginning with the crew trying to convince Picard to go on vacation, and he gets to go solve a mystery, that’s when it becomes real fun! And wow, what a character in Vash! And despite Picard’s protestations, it’s clear this is what he really wants to do in his gut, as we see from all the chemistry between him and her towards the end. Love the mystery with the Vorgons being the bad guys, totally out of left field!

This episode is a lot of fun.
great episode, nice to see picard have some fun

Riker in the turbolift was the peak of the episode.

I liked the hot streak whiteboard at the end.

It's a rare "away mission" for Picard. At least he wasn't getting his heart replaced this time.
hahahaha they HATED VASH!!. she's like picard's 4th best love interest in the whole franchise. the best line of this episode is picard saying "i wouldnt go that far", after the suggestion "someone you love".
And then saying “Riker…” the same way Seinfeld says “Newman..”

This is a good episode 👍
You didn't catch Michael Dorn out of his Klingon makeup at 18:23
I sort of predicted your reaction, based on your opinions about Deja Q.
I could make some easy guesses as to why, but I'll spare you :)
Anyway, it's nice to see a pattern forming - which will make it easier to brace for certain upcoming episodes! I can think of at least a couple of pure "comedy" episodes coming quite a bit later on.

Wow.🤔
"Feeble Lies, Hew-Mon!" Good old Max Grodenchik.

You must have never watched Clint Eastwood movies. That punch was PERFECT!!
The behind the scenes anecdotes about how this episode came about are more interesting than the episode itself xD
Not one of the best LOL but my FAVORITE moment is Picard taking James Joyce's "Ulysses" (one of the most difficult works of literature ever written) with him on holiday and telling Riker: "some light reading in case I get bored."
One of the best episodes of the season.
If they leaned into the comedy it would have been a fun and memorable episode. Perhaps the director or writers just couldn’t pull it together.
Right to jail
In my d&d campaigns, we call it "put pocket".
