We like to surf the wakes of passing boats and move between them to create an endless wave on our hydrofoils. We call this wake thieving. To do so, we need a foil that we can launch from our docks, and pump for a very long time. There are more than 59 hydrofoil brands, and within some brands you can build thousands of unique foils from five main components. We want to find the best foils for the lake, so we’ve setup a scorecard based on the 10 most important criteria. Please let us know know which foils you’d like us to review and stay tuned as we share what we learn on our journey to fly forever.
Disclosure: This season we will review many foil brands recommended to us by viewers, and review these foils with this same methodology. When possible, we will share the exact builds (mast, fuse, rear wing, front wing, etc) to help save viewers the time and energy to navigate through some of the decisions needed to spec a foil. Cloud IX was kind enough to send us this foil so we could try it and share our experience. We make a small commission if you purchase through the above link, but please feel free to purchase through your retailer of choice. #ad - Спорт
Several of us were hoping for the 1550V2 and tubercle test on the 1150, but you've been quite busy and winter in NY has likely taken over. Have a great winter, and we will choose and buy something from you in the spring for our next foil system. We love the science and watching your athletic progression. Grateful.
Thanks so much, Chris. Email me anytime. Wakethief@icloud.com. Working on the 1550v2. Should have that video within a month. Did the tubercle test on 1150, but need another attempt as the weight of the wing was just too high. I don’t foresee a product with tubercles in the future.
pls try the newer cloud fs foils. the blunt frontedge, what they call frontsweep, should be more efficient
Will do! Thanks
When are you reviewing the new foildrive?
Very soon! As soon as my ice thaws.
Quite a departure from the typical HA foil shapes dominating the market these days. It looks like a great surf wing too.
So true. It was a real surprise. I’m so thankful Chris reached out to tell me about it
Lovin your reviews.
Could you put a table up with foils that have already been tested with results. Cheers mate
Yes. Will make a video summarizing them all. This video has the first summary I’ve ever done near the end but I only flashed it briefly! Thanks
Did you see the table in the cloud IX F42 review?
@@WakeThief Now that I see the direct comparison it feels like the Sabfoil 1250 is underscored: From direct experience I can say that it Dockstarts just as easy as the 1150. I would furthermore give it +1 in stability (at high speeds) and +1 in price (at least here in Germany the components cost just as much, if not less than the Axis 1150 set).
I sincerely appreciate these thoughtful comments! Thank you. It tells me we're not alone in terms of seeing the value of getting into the details. This review took us a very long time and I still stand by the scores. The narrow operating range of the 1250 was evident, so with a narrower operating range of AoA you just have to be that much better / more precise (and practiced) to dock start it. The mast was very flexible in torsion, which made it very hard to control yaw at high speeds. With a stiffer mast (not sure what you're riding) I expect it would score better at higher speeds (stability). Price wise I am surprised a carbon mast foil setup could be similar in price to an aluminum mast setup from AXIS. Perhaps you're looking at the AXIS setup with a carbon mast vs the SABfoil setup with a carbon mast? Please do let me know. Thank you!!!
@@WakeThief You are right. Balz Mueller is an excellent foiler who could make that wing work. Most of us probably couldn't.
Pricewise the Axis front wings are more expensive than the Sabfoils (879€ for the Axis 1300 vs. 570€ for the 1250) which might compensate for the carbon mast. Overall both sets are in the same ball park (~1800€).
Would you be able to add some gas to increase boeyency
It would add a bit of lift but maybe only 1% or so. Love the out of the box thinking though! Thank you
How do you think it would fare with a bigger board and using a wing? I know you focus on pumping but I keep searching for the best and most economical foil for winging or, in a perfect world (and I know what I want doesn't exist for a multitude of reasons) a good all around foil to wing, kite, wake surf.
Hey Pete! Great to hear from you. The team at cloud IX says it’s a popular winging foil. It doesn’t surprise me because many of the other popular winging foils have scored well during our test. The price is certainly right.
Its too large for most wingfoiling. The F32, F28 especially and F24 are better sizes for winging.
Hello! I've been wanting to buy a hydrofoil for a long time, but there are so many of them on the internet! Can you please advise me a board and wing that is big enough to make sharp turns, so it would be easy to surf. I would also like to be able to pick up speed quickly and easily to pump. What length of stick should I get? Thanks!
I'd be happy to ... please feel free to reach out to me with your weight, boardsports skill background and if you want to do anything beyond surfing and pumping / dockstarting? Wakethief@icloud.com
