Honestly? It had the tone of a feature length Goosebumps or Are You Afraid Of The Dark episode, and I think that really worked in its favor, and was a good medium between kids and adults being able to get something out of it.
And I was actually happy with how they handled the references, I didn't feel they were at all intrusive and were very much fun to find as a fan, or easily ignored if you didn't, as you say.
And frankly, the animatronics being, y'know, actual animatronics really did make a lot of the movie for me. They real and physical and that's super cool!!
Honestly, my only problem was the fact that I didn't realize Golden Freddy was Golden Freddy at first. I may be stupid.

You’re not the only one! I had a friend who also didn’t realize it was Golden Freddy, haha. I think Golden Freddy might be weird enough to need more explanation for new viewers to understand. Though also keeping his presence limited, ghostly and confusing might also be the perfect thing to add to the atmosphere.

I personally enjoyed the FNaF movie, it holds alot of personal value to me, I think it could've been better, but I'm still happy I got to watch it in theaters
The only thing in the movie that I hate with a *burning* passion is that fort scene, it felt very disrespectful to the original story, and I just can't see that happening anywhere other than those cheesy sfm fnaf animations for the 2010's

I'm sorry but it had bad writing, horrible pacing, negligible atmosphere, deflated tension, nonsense plot, not scary, terrible jumpscares, underutilization of characters, terrible cuts from scene to scene, cute, goofy and friendly animatronics, bizarre tonal shift, UA-camr cameos, stupid comedy etc etc. You can have your opinion of course, but it was FAR from a phenomenal movie, let alone a FNaF movie. I really did try to enjoy it, but to no avail.
