MC'd by MC Codebreaker and mixed by DJ Timecode, MSX FM is a station that plays Jungle/drum and bass music and has no commercials. The station is based on a pirate radio theme which broadcasts illegally across Liberty City. The station's FM frequency is mentioned to be 101.1, an allusion to the 2001 Moving Shadow mix CD mixed by Timecode named "Moving Shadow 01.1". The tracks featured on MSX FM are a subset of those on 01.1. MSX FM is the second favourite station of the Southside Hoods. It should also be noted that the game is set in the year 2001 while the station has the frequency 101.1, while it has the suffix "98" in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, which takes place in 1998.

The chapters are wrong, First Contact is actually from 9:30 - 12:40 and Spectre is after that.

I was driving in London today and "THC Radio" came on. It sounded JUST LIKE THIS. 20 years later and the culture lives on. Even though GTA3 was a fictional New York, this music still fit in with the aesthetic of the game with the gloomy atmosphere

Rockstar was really letting their Britishness show with this radio station. Was there a following for DnB/jungle in America back in the 90's and early 2000's? I still think of it as being a distinctly London-based phenomenon. I guess it's similar to how there are Yardies in Liberty City, even though they're also a London phenomenon.
Rockstar are a British company originally based in Scotland. First 2 GTAs. (DMA design - used to be Pysgnosis from Liverpool and made games on the Amiga / ST & C64 / PC). If you know your history. Obviously jungle is London, Bristol & Manchester which is born out of ragga / dancehall and US house / techno
Granted, it's not like the other GTA's don't gave british artists. Heck, iFruit Radio in GTA V is co hosted by Skepta and features grime and DnB.

This set will never die, unfortunately the MC (Codebreaker) has "retired" now, Moving Shadow are gone, and as for Timecode I have no idea, it's a shame drum and bass/jungle has kind of been absorbed into dubstep now.

Callum Pengelly Timecode now programs music for films such as Hot Fuzz, Casino Royale & Die Another Day. Shame about Moving Shadow and Codebreaker, this set is still fat as fuck and it goes in hard. It will remain a gem to those who know of it's existence.
Can any of you guys recommend tracks/sets similar to this one? GTA 3 and this set in particular was what got me interested in this era of D&B. Since then I've discovered Bad Company, I simply love their sets from 99-00. Same about Dom & Roland's Killabites compilation, which of course was another brilliant Moving Shadow release.
SickzorOne Nowadays it may be, but the live sets I've listened of Ed Rush & Optical, Bad Company, Andy C, Randall, Grooverider had MCs in them without exception. I'm definitely going to take a look at what you sent though, I feel like I haven't really got anything else to listen to, which is false of course. I seem to have explored the most relevant sets/tracks of each and every single era of Drum & Bass. 1998-2003 is possibly my favourite era of it. Dieselboy's Director's Cut is possibly on the top list of my favourites too, it's a shame there's no tracklist available for it though.

@@limpbizkit4381 probably because rockstar removed the original versions of the games from sale, so if you wanted to play 3, vc or SA, you had to buy the 60 dollar remaster. preventing you from playing the games as they were originally intended, removing support for over a decade of mods etc.

Back when Drum n Bass was drum and bass. This mix still does bits and I still miss Moving Shadow, such a sick label bitd. We used to pull over and vibe out to this mix (normally while we were billing up lol).

I was already into drum and bass and regularly going out to clubs getting smashed to it when this game came out , so it was my go to channel whenever I stole a car , but i wonder how many people became DnB fans after playing this game ?
I know for certain i am a fan of some songs I'd never heard in my life before I'd heard it on GTA , or maybe I had but either way, this series has been a bit more than just a game to me and I imagine many more

Damn, what a journey into the past! Was so pleasantly surprised to see some UK represent! on a video game destined for the US market. Sometimes, MCs can get very annoying repeating the same nonsense, but Codebreaker was sublime here. Also representing with a youf accent; not everyone in England talks like the Queen. I remember Americans asking if this was an actual accent in England!

Multicultural London English (the MC's accent) has several influences, including Jamaican English. It's a very interesting accent; in my UA-cam channel's videos, I try to control it but, sometimes, a couple of words just pop out from being accustomed to this accent. MLE is the sort of accent that's used by MCs since Drum & Bass evolved from Jungle, which was associated with reggae and dancehall (Jamaica) and then carried by Jamaican immigrants into the UK in the 1970s. Drum & Bass really has a lot of influences from all over the place (not just from Jamaica's music genre); Drum & Bass really has an interesting history to it and is continually evolving! #TheMoreYouKnow

Im a man of my mid 30s. I was prime age in 1997 when GTA dropped on PS1. That game changed us all at that time. We loved this living, breathing city of crime and carniage. GTA London and GTA2 came around and offered more of the same. Different but similar. But we always longed to see what that city looked like down on the streets. Obviously our 32bit minds could not comprehend how it would look or play, so when they announced GTA3 on PS2 and told us it would be 3D and on the ground......we were skeptical. There was no way they could capture that vibe of GTA when it was so in-your-face and raw. I was sure the series was about to die. Safe to say after a few hours of playing I was hooked. We all were. It wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. It was 100x better. They captured such an atmosphere in that game that has never been replicated, only GTA:SA came close in my mind. Absolute classic game with classic tunes like these!

Согласен. Мне 16, играл в много игр, но лучше чем в GTA 3 нигде музыки не слышал. Иногда даже из машины не хочется выходить, лучше музыку послушать.

Самая мощная радиостанция за всю историю GTA!!!!! Я GTA 3 даже больше Vice City люблю,именно за её саундтрек. Конечно музыка 80-х годов это тоже здорово,но брутальная,мощная,быстрая и энергичная музыка мне нравится больше. Я впринципе до GTA 3 никогда таких эмоций от музыки не испытывала. Просто обалдеть же можно,всего 25 минут прослушивания такой музыки и ты готов хоть горы сворачивать!!!!!

I remember this from just about leaving school and getting into garage and drum and bass.

I didn't realize the MC was on a tare for the whole set. If you took the radio callsigns out of the rhyme, This was the sound of my weekend 1996-2003. Drum n Bass has come such a long way. So happy to have been part of the movement. And, I was lucky enough to share with DJ stage with all of my heroes. It truly was a great time to be alive. This vid brings back such fond memories.

I don't understand peoples complaints about the MC. Granted it's fine it's not everyones' jam, but this was fairly common practice back in the day, and in my opinion, is just as great of a nostalgia blast. Think of it as providing on-the-spot-high-off-his-ass lyrics and doesn't bother me at all. Would the music alone be better without it? I'm not so sure, there isn't quite enough variation in some songs to stand on their own as far as I'm concerned. I'll probably get hate for saying that but go ahead, I'll be busy hitting replay. =)
I actually agree with you about the MC. Still, the popular electronic music from the 90s and early 2000s is still way better than the shit everyone is brainwashed into listening to today imo. You're also right that these individual songs, while very cool sounding & catchy, aren't a masterpiece by any means (why do you think no one's ever heard of or remembers any of these artists?) If you want to hear music thats actual compositions of electronic sounds, go to Warp Records ffs.

9:29 I'm pretty sure im saying what everyone else said, but jesus hearing that again took me waaaaay way back. It always seemed to be playing on MSX, and if not I always ended up hearing it while listening to the channel, as MSX and Lips 106 i changed between frequently. But when i hear that tune i remember being 5, probably staying up too late on school night, cruising around town in one of those black mafia cars as the sun was going down, eventually just a dark gloomy sky as i listen to this track which always seemed erie to me. Perhaps it was discovering a genre i never heard of before or maybe it was just the mood it set... but damn i never forgot that tune.

MrMartGonzo I'm taklin' about GTA 'IV' (GTA4). Got a nice soundsystem for many kinda people. But a DnB radio station's missing on GTA 'IV'. With a rasta DJ and vocalizer. I always like a Reggae/Dancehall joint with DnB, Dubstep and/or Breakbeat.

I agree, I'm just saying there's no drum and bass radio in gta 5 either and at least with 4 you could add in your own tracks with no issues but in 5 it doesn't work very well.

9:28 Man this really hits hard. Back when i played game in 2001 in gaming place on PS2, it felt amazing. Out of place playing this game.
Straight in 1st part of the island when it's foggy or raining.
I cannot describe what magic this game gave with graphics and screen. Then VC. THEN SA, which was beyond good.
Gaming place was busy with adults and children, waited few hours to play the game.
This and Tekken 4.
All 3 games are really good.
23 people worked on GTA 3 and looked like it was worked like over 200.
