One of the best comments/ideas I have ever heard, maybe the best was from Ron Dennis. He said in you put two people in two rooms. One hot/warm/stuffy/artificial light and the other in a cool/calm/daylight etc. You then start throwing decisions at them, who will react better or decide the better course on decision making. The hot, flustered staff or the cool, calm collected. Human performance degrades by 5% per degree above 24 oC. Amazing human science/performance and wanted the chapter to go on.
The amount of kit and electronics in and around the driver contributes to this. The clothing they wear to protect from fire is another huge factor to driving around in a 4 wheel sauna,

Wow what a guy Dr Aki was, I recall his name from Lewis Hamilton paying tribute to him in 2016 & saying he was glad he got to see him & his family before he sadly died from cancer, He left behind quite the legacy RIP.
@f1elvis I literally opened up the video a minute after it was posted and I am the 47th viewer to get to it! Just goes to show what a following you have and are building, keep up the great work!
This story had me In stitches back when I read your book. Wonder if those suits are still stored somewhere rat the bottom of the lake alongside Martin Witmarsh, hahaha
Hey Elvis! A well known Finnish F1 reporter called Heikki Kulta just published a book, and a local newspaper published a short story about Kimi's world championship party from the book. In the story Heikki was with Kimi going back from Red Bull's end of season party, they met an old mechanic of Kimi's, who Kimi introduced to Heikki just as "Elvis". Then all crammed up in an old Lada taxi. Now I almost remember hearing some version of this story before, but I can't find it was it in some of your vids I've watched.
When I used to fuel for an alms car, I had to wear a triple layer fire suit. One race had really hot temps. We checked my core temperature compared to other pit crew guys in their single layer suits. They were at about 100 degrees F and I was at 150.
Massively enjoying the videos and tales from the tree house, it must have been aware during pitstops in the spacesuits as they look awkward to work in, and I'm sure had the best intentions.
I remember this. I always wondered why they were never used again. I assumed it had to do with the bulk and how cumbersome the maintenance was in terms of infrastructure.
I love these tales and the passion you have telling them. Just a quick question, any chance of another book? The mechanic is up there in my top three autobiography’s
Mark I remember the suits well, getting them on was a major problem, pretty sure they were two parts, the cooling and the Sacrificial outer layer, but the biggest problem for me was the helmet design, I was on the front wheel gun and just could not see the wheel nut easily. But yes it was great for publicity,.
I am astonished that an outfit like McLaren didn't do all the fitting for all the pit crew in private back at the factory as well as practice pitstops with the new equipment to work out the kinks before taking them anywhere near a race meeting.
#AskElvis With Honda pulling out of F1, and rumours circulating that Red Bull might take over the IP of Honda's facilities; also with Andy Cowell's departure from Mercedez, do you think it's just a coincidence? I would not be surprised if Andy Cowell decides to join RB and head the Engine Department. Love your videos, keep up the good work!
Aww Marc. I bet your fist thought of seeing the suits was Ron is sending you on a F1 space mission. Wow The first F1 team in space. How good is this job! Great story mate Nige n Debs Down Under #askelvis
#AskElvis the F1 teams are all working like a high performance machine now. the way they tackle every hurdle every issues is impressive , can we implement some of that into our life.

"My airbag didn't inflate when i crashed my spaceship"... hehe... This video served me with great entertainment while i had my afternoon coffee break, thank you :)
#AskElvis with the current situation of honda leaving F1 because of road vehicle relevance it got me thinking about engine rules and how to make F1 tech more relevant. What if they limit the ice output to a certain amount of HP and lose the limit on battery capacity power deployment and power regen do you think this is an idea F1 could ever do and do you think this could work? Love the show and especially the livestreams on Mondays

Marc Priestley F1 Elvis hi Elvis thanks mate I never expected a comment from yourself who I hold in the highest esteem. You tell it so well I can imagine the look on Ron’s face at times👍
#AskElvis, Marc just 2 questions: i. When are you and your good lady wife going to do a video together. We've glimpsed her twice, but it would be nice to hear her opinion of a race weekend. ii. If RBR are unable to secure a PU supplier or manufacture one for themselves for 2022; what do you think will happen to Verstappen, if Hamilton and Bottas, don't leave Mercedes at the end of 2021. Again Marc, you and the family stay safe and health. PS: remember to treat Rex fairly.
@@F1Elvis perhaps your good lady could join you for the session with when and if Hamilton equals (91 wins) or breaks (92 wins) Schumacher's race win record.
Until the Jordan years F1 was only passing interest to me, being from Ireland Jordan was a BIG thing for us. But Williams and McLaren were the guys taking it to the red cars! So I may have worn turquoise or black and yellow shirts cheering on Jordans at the F1 in village pub (free F1 breakfast if you wore team colours) It was McLaren I was putting my 50p on to win every week! 😂 I remember the space suits well at least they looked the part! 😂
These are kind of stories and stuff that made me so attracted to Mclaren when I was watching. Of course the red car was winning when I started. And soon Renault came. But Mclaren seemed different. Always. With their recent Honda partnership they seemed to be lost. The old Mclaren was lost. Never coming back. But when Sianz and Lando came aboard. And a new team principal. There was a new hope. Mclaren now seems different to Ron’s Mclaren. But it’s not bad different. It’s good. I hope they get back up on top.
Alright Marc? Are you aware of if those sorts of suits still exist? I mean theyve had 20 years more development time. Sometimes great ideas ahead of their time didnt work back then because of the technology didnt exist. For instance Campagnolo and Mavic had electronic bicycle gears in the 1990s, but neither worked due to the size and reliability of the electronic components themselves. Nice to hear wee snippets of your book. :) mark
Marc worked at McLaren from 2000-2008. During that period, Ferrari won 84 out of 157 races (53.5%), 6 out of 9 drivers' titles, and 7 out of 9 constructors' titles. Over the last nine years (2012-2020, obviously not including the last 7 races of this year as they haven't happened yet), Mercedes have won 101 out of 170 races (59.4%), and are on course to take their seventh drivers' and constructors' titles. That's a pretty similar level of dominance. And part of the dominance is because Ferrari then and Mercedes now have perfected all of the tiny little details, just as Marc goes through in this video.
Look at every detail, improve each possible thing, build cutting edge tech to overcome any obstacle, don't bother doing a private test and training using said tech before bragging about it and show it to the world. Understood.
Honda are a major international motor manufacturer, with all their experience and money they are still behind the curve after what 6 years, so without a major manufacturer Red Bull would not have a chance of developing an engine unless Honda let them bankroll the project, that's a lot of energy drinks to sell and they are still playing catch up with Merc. It would be ideal if an independent Engine manufacturer could do it but it's Multinational Company only these days given the complexity of these hybrid engines.
RedBull are a drinks company that also make some fashion clothing lines.. Basically a marketing company with some body making capabilities for their F1 cars. Can’t imagine the costs involved in tooling up tor an F1 engine plant. Best bet would be to buy the Honda setup but I doubt that it would be so easy to seperate out from Honda’s other car manufacturing businesses.
I still don't understand why air conditioning wasn't effective enough and millions needed to be spent on Ron's and the other fellow's wild ideas. Nowadays I bet F1 will ban such things citing cost cap measures.
Aircon in an open garage with everyone dressed in multilayer firesuits and nomex underwear, with gloves, balaclavas and helmets, does very little, if anything, to lower body temperature.
Was it just abandoned or was a snap link connection considered to keep the crew cool while waiting then uncoupled when readying for a pit stop then coupling back up when done?

Bigger question: Why are Williams so badass at pitstops, and just plain ass at everything else?
So Marc. Why McLaren really struggles from time to time in pit stops since 2010? A lot of errors and problems i very important part of the race.
Because it's not easy to do perfectly, every time.
