I'm a 1944 borner from Istanbul Türkiye. There were several private schools in the Ottoman Empire founded by foreign countries providing education in their native languages during early and mid 18th ciecle. Among them were 2 English high schools, one for girls and the other for boys. My elder sister who had enrolled to EHFG in 1950 used to sing this song she learned at school during her 4th year. By the way the school had 2 prep years for teaching English before they started the usual curriculum. Now I'm 79 and it has been almost 66 years since I've listened to it from my sister. Quite a romantic song from those old days.

@@mr.dr.prof.patrick7284 Thanks, my 5 year older sister is alive & thanks lord, so am I. I'm considerably well as a childless widower. Our only child passed away first and then my 57 old wife passed. Life is funny sometimes. The general expectation is that husbands die first, though there are quiet a number of exceptions. I wish I were not one of those exceptions, alas the decision is not in our hands. Thank you so much for your kindness.

I grew up before tv and my father played guitar (self-taught as a child); later we had a small electric chord organ and all of us (nine children plus parents) learned to play it. We sang together almost every night and always in the car on Sunday drives. I'm so glad I found your site, with the songs I remember so well and still love . . . thank you!

This makes the song more famous in instrumental version more than in vocal version 😅. Many piano and violin method books have this song included but its lyrics are not often heard.
I think the words are beautiful still, just need some more refinement though
