Yeah but this isn't at all the real message of don't try. He completely misinterpreted it. He first saw it and found it upsetting, so he overcompensated by applying the first logical explanation he could. It's much more about flow state and religious themes like "lean not on your own understanding".

I love his headstone because, just like I'm sure he thought would happen, ppl completely misunderstand it. Bukowski never tried to do any of the things he did. He never tried he just did it. Because he was doing what he wanted. He was trying to do anything, be anyone, or accomplish any feat. He wrote for the sake of writing and for the sake of saying what he really felt and thought. Yes, he sent out his works and writing but if it didn't work out he didn't give a flying fuck. He wrote because he couldn't help but write. The years he didn't write he damn near killed himself. When he spent the rest of his days always writing, he survived one of the most severe cases of alcoholism in the art world. Because art is the oil the burns within us to constantly drive the artist towards his unknown destination. Bukowski never convinced himself that he was less than if he didn't achieve some sort of arbitrary societal status because that's who he was. A blue collar grunt, who lived his life based on the reality at hand and nothing else, no delusions and no selfish desires, just unapologetically himself, and fortunately for us he decided to share what he wrote because why the fuck not. I love that the creator of this video understood what he really meant and was really all about. Phenomenal piece, my friend!

It's crazy that so many great artist find success when they already "old" or after their life. It's like we think we have to be something or someone in our early twenties. And if we're "nothing" or we didn't achieve what we wanted, we are a failure. We think our life is over when we're older, so we try hard and work harder when we're younger. It's crazy that we have to choose who we are going to be by 18, as in, what's going to be my future job and life. And after college or when we get a stable job in our late 20's we believe we're done, we figured it all out. We usually give up our dreams by then, because we're too old or it's too late or we should focus on different things like marriage, family etc. What I'm trying to say is, do what you love you're never too old. And even if it feels like nobody is appreciates your work, some day someone will.

@@ramenaddict1676 Media, particularly in North America, love to hyperfocus on the "outliers", whether precocious kids, oddball actors, athletes who seemingly have superpowers, the highschool geek who becomes one of the richest men in the world, or Oprah. Why? The obvious answer is that most media is commercial, and therefore it must attract as wide an audience as it can to serve up to advertisers, and any emotionally-charged variation on the freakshow theme will generally serve to do this. But I also think it goes beyond the commercial to the cultural. People seem to want visual media to alternately attract and repel them; the audience wants to both identify with and reject who and what they are seeing, to have their prejudices challenged and confirmed at the same time. It's hard for me to not see this as a type of psychological straight-jacket, as it would appear to make real growth or insight on the part of the audience next to impossible. I think The Sopranos is an excellent example of utterly brilliant social commentary that is missed by most of the audience because they are transfixed on individual characters, often to the point of taking on the speech patterns of one of the characters in their own life (I've actually seen adults do this), even if they've never even been to New Jersey, and even if they would never engage in criminal behaviour themselves.

I discovered Bukowski's poetry when I was a teenager. I was browsing in a bookstore one day, and I decided to pick up one of his books. I was amused with the boldness of his words. He could write about something embarrassing in his life and not seem to care how his audience would judge him. I didn't like poetry at the time, but I liked his poetry because it was something that I could relate to. I was even inspired to write my own poetry. Thank you for your work, Mr. Bukowski.

@@nixpaFPS And pretty fucked up considering the inevitable collapse of human civilization, especially if it's not a result of our own undoing and is brought about by something such as the eventual death of our sun. Find myself thinking about that quite a bit, how detached people are from the fact of our unavoidable demise; though we may not be the ones to witness it, at some point, there will be humans faced with that situation. One of the strongest arguments in support of anti-natalism, perhaps.

Philosophy should be taught more in high school. There aren’t enough deep thinkers anymore. Everybody performs mindless tasks thinking they will benefit their futures when really it’s just another a cycle of performing dreadful tasks until you retire, then ultimately die after not living your ideal life. The time on earth you have is a beautiful gift that’s wrapped in dog shit. Life has great potential but naturally it sucks ass, and it’s those who think whether or not they’ll be happy following their current path that truly realize they need a change.

I'm about to graduate high school, your comment is exactly what I've been thinking these whole days, it's so strange. I share your point of view and opinion, they should implement philosophy all three years in high school, I only got it for 6 months, fucking loved it, I hate school, but philosophy made me love going to school Tuesdays and Fridays. Changed me a lot, and i got mad at my classmates when they would trash philosophy saying it's boring and makes them go to sleep, they even made fun of the nice and pacient teacher with cute sweaters that would teach us philosophy. Bunch of assholes.

Do something that you enjoy instead and fuck the prestige of doing something that corrupt ideals of Western society tells you to do. Along the way I've struggled with terrible working environments and schedules, toxic family members trying to (and succeeding) in conning me out of tens of thousands of dollars. I think it was just a simple, though profound, piece of practical advice for creating. Of course, the advice can be used for other things, but you can tell what he meant by his own words:
"Somebody asked me: "What do you do? How do you write, create?" You don't, I told them. You don't try. That's very important: not to try, either for Cadillacs, creation or immortality. You wait, and if nothing happens, you wait some more. It's like a bug high on the wall. You wait for it to come to you. When it gets close enough you reach out, slap out and kill it. Or if you like its looks, you make a pet out of it."
And more of what was written in that letter:
"We work too hard. We try too hard. Don't try. Don't work. It's there. It's been looking right at us, aching to kick out of the closed womb. There's been too much direction. It's all free, we needn't be told. Classes? Classes are for asses. Writing a poem is as easy as beating your meat or drinking a bottle of beer."

    • @sashabenariel1
      @sashabenariel1 4 роки тому +6

I think its deeper than that. You have to consider why you try in the first place. Its not up to you. Its your hardware. What is the reason you feel stimulated to try, and what is the reason you feel incredible heaviness when you try with other things? This is your natural state. When you don't try, it allows your subconscious to effortlessly put effort into something. Its called "flow." It happens in nature. Study animals closely, and you can see them trying without trying. Its the conscious that gets in our way. Its the software that we've been conditioned to learn. Thats why meditation is so important. It awakens in you the voice that understands what you want and how to live in the flow. Thats what I believe he meant.

I spent more than ten years of life working on a music album dedicated to the passing of my father.
I bought so much recording equipment to make it that I ran out of room for my bed so I started propping my mattress up against the wall, laying that down to sleep on at night, just so I had room for more equipment.
I reduced it down to a five track EP, burned it onto one hundred vinyl style CDs each with it's own unique cover that I made by hand and sealed them with a wax seal on each bearing my initials.
I gave 50 of them to a nearby record store that then never saw the light of day, as the era of CD had ended.
The rest I put in a box and stuck under my desk.
I don't care if the World never hears it. I wrote it for two people, one is me, and the other isn't here anymore.
I had something to say, and I said it.
I put it away and I moved on with my life.
I found piece, and I found it on my terms.
