This is great. So cool to hear and see the code. I'm in the process of learning. SOTA is my goal eventually. SSB soon but CW when I get my legs. It was great to see and hear the conversation. Thank you for all your contributions! Yes this is an older one but so am I. 73
Always love it when the operator busts his buns to get that DX QSO in the logs, no matter how many repeats that it takes. Solid commitment to get that QSO, makes them memorable.
Up here in Idaho, we have dozens of fire lookouts that can be activated… there are a few you can rent for the night and sleep in. It’s always been my aim to activate a few. I have the Jeep, my KX2, and some other small qrp radios, and I’ve run out of excuses. Great video Adam… 72 de W7UDT (dit dit)
Hi Adam, Finally watched the video and I was the last SSB contact before you went to CW, but you cut it just before I gave you the 10 over signal report from Philly. :-) Stay safe.
Excellent Video, Adam! Always fun to see folks challenging the unusual like night OPs ...as it takes planning, some optimism and the right tools but you pulled it off with grace my friend making look easy! Good Job! thanks for sharing & congrats on the DX! ~ de wGOAT
Great activation in a great location! I love fire lookout towers (professional flaw, if you understand me :))) Oh yes, the photos are top-notch. 73 de 9A3GVD.
The fire lookout towers are awesome! Many are maintained and used actively, and as historical sites. Those that work in the towers act both as fire watches, and as ambassadors to the towers and to fire safety. Really love them too 😁
Dude, so cool. I found your channel not long ago while getting into the hobby and looking for info on SOTA ops. I'm also a trail runner, and I'm hoping to build one of your antennas to bring with me on some long mountain adventures in the Wasatch! I'll keep an ear to the ground, hope to do a S2S someday. Cheers! - N7AUX
@@DonDegidio, great to get you in the log too! It was really fun hearing so many familiar names and calls coming back that night. You guys made it a really fun activation.
'First contact was John ZL1BYZ ', I've said that more than a few times! And your first CW chaser too. Thanks John if you're reading this. What battery did you power the 857 with? Paul VK3HN.
@@K6ARK and John VK4TJ, another very regulator chaser. VK4TJ is 5th and ZL1BYZ is 9th on my activation chaser list on SOTAWatch. Keep the Californian summit videos coming.
@@K6ARK Thats some battery! All day? 100W? blimey. I was thinking of getting an FT-891 and running it on 5-10W . That thing uses a HUGE amount of juice, even on RX. The brochure says 2amps. I'll have to sell a kidney to get a KX2 or KX3 (I already have an FT817ND)...
@@G7VFY yes, about 2 A on receive is accurate. The final amplifier in SSB rigs are inefficient even when idling. Still, that's 5-6 hours of receiving with a 12Ah battery. Transmit current and duty cycle varies quite a bit. I sometimes dial the power back to 50w for longer life. For drive-up activations I've also got a 60 Ah LiFePO4 🤘😆👍

Lots of fun to watch. One of these days I'll understand the CW. Listening from El Cajon...
Great photos!
Hi Adam! Very cool video and PileUp! I like it 😀
Hope to meet you on the air!
Good luck! 73&88 de UB1AOA
Was a pleasure to watch your video, thanks for that !! And great job with all those contacts !

I liked the cw segment. With the translation at the bottom I actually started to pick some of it out. I need to study some cw thanks for the video
I noticed this too! I wonder if there are resources that could help you learn like this. That was very effective for me.

Adam, what logging app are you using on your phone in this video????
What was the capacity of the big Lithium battery? How much power were you running and how long did the battery last?
It's a 12 Ah Bioenno and typically lasts 2-4 hours depending on power output and duty cycle.

Hi, what logging app was that??
I use VK Port-A-Log for android.
K6ARK Portable Radio Thank you.
No problem! It's not in the app store - have to download direct. groups.io/g/vk3zpf-logger
K6ARK Portable Radio Is that the same log app Jake was using?
@@564Fire I think he was using OutD log which IS available in the app store. Both are very good for SOTA.
