The world will pump more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in 2017 than in any other year in recorded history. With doomsday scenarios on the horizon, there's growing pressure on fossil fuel companies to act - or be seen to act - in the fight against climate change. But are they truly ready to alter the way they do business?
Total, Statoil, Shell: Some of the world's largest oil companies are making hefty investments into wind, solar and electric battery storage. Today, more than ever, green investments are making sense for economic reasons, as well as ecological ones. Are these moves into renewable energy an attempt to soften their corporate image or indicative of a real shift away from fossil fuels?

Many of the traditional, oil and gas companies will wither away. And a higher focus on energy groups, that operate power plants and the like will arise.
They are not only in control over electricity and heat. But also over a large part, of the transport sector.

China has made extremely aggressive moves towards green energy and it's crushing their commitment targets. If the rest of big oil doesn't put on their big boy pants they'll be relegated to a minor role in industry.
Oil is of course required for green tech to work but it's hardly anything compared to petrol/diesel/kerosene.

So is Western Europe. Otherwise, I agree with you. They either have to adapt to the changing demands or die. Russia, Saudi Arabia & Venezuela are going to take a huge hit from this movement to adopt renewable.
