- Hurricane Ida slams into the Louisiana coast as a Category 4 storm Sunday afternoon August 29 2021
Swells started arriving late Sunday morning to South Padre Island on the Texas Coast close to the Border of Mexico.
Plenty of waves to be had with views from a drone and water cameras capturing the usual suspects and lots of mates.

South Padre really does get some good surf periodically. Generally the tropical depressions and hurricanes that move across the Gulf of Mexico. The further away they are the better to get the decent groundswell without the winds :)
@@whatsupcats how many times a week is it rideable with a shortboard? do you live on the island or in port isabel?
@@xisotopex Hi yes, we live on the Island. The surf is only good for shortboards when there is a good swell, tropical depression or hurricane, so that's a tricky question.

Port Isabel native here, and I used to love boogie boarding and body surfing these waves, though I would never go that far out. I usually went past the 2nd sandbar where there were some decent sized waves, but never went out to the 3rd. It hate that I never got the hang of surfing as I was really interested in doing it, but I can't keep my balance worth a darn even after lessons.
Hi Ken, stoked you found out local surf, sailing and rockets channel.
You can surf no problem, you just have to keep at it. Getting past the third sandbar can be difficult when it’s breaking a lot, so we generally go down to the jetties as the sandbars are broken up a bit there making it easier to get out and the waves are better. @@whatsupcats I was just in town and took advantage of the Hurricane Ian surf, though not at the Jetties. I was staying at a condo on Atol St. and just walked to the beach from there. The surf was good, and I had a good boogie boarding session.

We suggest: Learn to swim, conquer your fears, learn to surf, get barreled and increase your stoke meter ✌️🤙
When is the best time of year with the exception of hurricanes to get the most swells? Are the jetties on Isla Blanca beach?
Hi Johnny, the jetties are the entrance from the Gulf of Mexico to the port of Brownsville with the North jetty bordering Isla Blanca park beach. This is typically the best surfing spot as sandbars are formed better. Best surf is summer when hurricanes and tropical depressions form far away to produce good swell and a long period with either west wind or no wind. Winter swells from cold fronts can get big, but generally blown out and chaotic. South of the jetties at Boca Chica is the best spot for these swells. Just have to watch the offshore buoys for swell generated by strong winds which can produces some good summer surf too. Have fun out there and thanks so much for tuning into our channel.
