Finally someone that shows a full progression. Anything else is just a trim video claiming how to start a bonsai or make a bonsai. this gives a great idea to new comers to try it on their own. Yes it takes time but people only ever show trimming YEARS apart.
Cutting almost all roots on the 2nd plant - BALLS dude. Also such aggressive trimming on the 1st plant but I noticed every time it came back, the small branch was bigger. I am an experienced gardener but new to the Bonsai game so I'm still studying. I have learned more from your video than anything I have watched on UA-cam. You know your shit. Keep up the good work!
You are a maniac! Hahaha. This is a really great video. I always try to explain bonsai to people. And they don't get it... This is the video that can help explain it. Very extreme experiments but well done.
I like this tree so much i ordered a chinese elm to grow indoor with lights just like you. Now currently waiting for it to break dormancy as it must have been grown outside and it's winter time so almost all the leaves are off the branches at the moment. Thanks for the inspiration.
I'm figuring out what hobby I want to pick up and Bonsai seems really cool - I'm already into growing succulents and have been doing that (poorly lol) for about two years so I like things that stay small and take a long time to grow. I've watched a dozen bonsai videos or so now but this one made it seem soooooo cool and science-projecty and I absolutely love the colors! Thanks for this video, really shows off what attracts me to caring for bonsai in the first place
What a brave cut. There Will be a great miniature tree on your palm. I love bonsai progression in one video like this. Big thanks for sharing :). But maybe you can give more time to grow a new leader before next pruning. It'll smoothen the trunk faster for more natural look.
I accidentally knocked off the entire root ball off a pepper plant. Used some CloneX along with the powder you use and it came back to life, like nothing happened. That stuff is amazing!
Glad to have found your channel. Just yesterday I asked Nigel Saunders about the use of rooting hormone in bonsai. You are the first bonsai practitioner I have seen use it. Have you looked at the roots since repotting in Jan 2019? Did your hearty Chinese elm survive?
have u tried High/Low light? & see if it grows bushy or tall? i hear that in the aquarium plants if u give high light plant grows short, if low light is given, the plant tries to reach the light to get more light, & gets taller
Same as all the other followers here, love the progression video. Very cool to see the growth of you bonsai :) I do have a question, you listed all the tools in the info section but I what fertilizer are you using and how do you apply it on your Chinese elm soil mix? Cheers, keep up the nice work
My advice is to water sparingly - maybe once a week, when the leaves are just starting to wrinkle. Then water deeply. I also keep mine under grow lights.
Why not change the growing angle when your did the severe root chop. The vertical trunk needs to be on a gentle lean to give the illusion of a tree that has endured years of hardship. Good luck.
I loved your video! the timestamped updates, the captions explaining your thought process, the methodical way you shot the tree at each step, and your detailed list of tools in your description are all things that i wish every youtube bonsai-er did. That being said, I'd advise not pruning your tree so frequently in the future, especially if you're trying to do something like a ground layer. especially with 100% indoor growth, you should be trying to maximize the growth potential of your tree at all times, not keep it in a continuous state of recovery. you pruned april '17, june '17, september '17, march '18, april '18, june '18, september '18, and sometime between september '18 and january '19. 8 pruning sessions in under 2 years would still be a lot for an outdoor chinese elm, let alone an indoor one. If it were mine, I wouldn't have pruned before layering in april '17 all the way through april '18, then checked the roots. I'd bet that that would've been enough time for the unrestricted growth to facilitate tons of new roots forming at the layer sites. then i'd sever the old root system, gently repot, and let it go without pruning again for another 6-8 months. then before spring '19, do a hard chop. you'd have gotten the same ramification, but with significantly better wound healing and branch thickening, as well as it already being on a better rootsystem. Subscribed, looking forward to seeing how those chili fusions turn out!
Thanks for the advice! I am brutal with my trees, I know haha. It's all experimentation and fun. Trees are not suppose to be gown indoors anyways. I've been told I would fail.
How often would you prune an outdoor Chinese elm that only has the usual repotting and root pruning once every 2 years? I've heard people say you have to trim every 3 months, but it does seem like a lot. I've been pruning mine hard in winter, then trimming back to 2 or 3 sets of leaves in summer every year...
Hi dude !!! I really like your videos, my respect for you. Tell me please, are you doing the soil for bonsai yourself or are you buying a ready substrate ??? if you wish, write or make a video how do you do it ???
I make my own soil by formerly mixing sifted turface, perlite and miracle-gro cactus palm citrus potting soil. My new mix for 2019 is turface, pumice and pine bark.
I'm impressed that your tree lived through all that was done to it. My question is why did you do all that to it? From the beginning to the end of your video, I can't see that the tree has made any progress. All the tree's energy has been spent on simply trying to recover and survive. You still have basically the same little tree that you started with. I mean no offense. I'm just trying to understand the point of doing what you did.
Good grief, I had no idea Chinese elms could take completely removing the roots! Very interesting video. Thanks for taking the time to make it!

A very bold move removing the roots, I can't wait to see the root base in the future. A great video!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone thank you! I can’t wait to see how roots base turns out. I will check / repot next September.
@@BonsaiByLAN you know what time it is :)
@@BonsaiByLAN September has been and gone. Any updates?
Wow that's a nice little tree. You did put your tree through a tough battle. It's the little tree that could.
Idk why there are so many dislikes? Great job, I love watching others share their Bonsai trees. TY
Amazing the patient and work (and saved each clip) and never abandoned this small little guy! End result is extraordinary!
You’re a brave man, I couldn’t bring myself to take such drastic methods.
That's a cool video. I'm impressed the tree survived the cutting off of every root. Looking forward to seeing more on this one.

This is absolutely amazing! I'm just thinking of getting into bonsai, but this was super cool! Absolutely inspirational!

am from indonesia, come to watch your elm, nice and congratulation my boss👍
Nice job my man
I was surprised by the total root removal! Glad it survived...
The tree is a survivor!
Nice work !
How many days did you keep the tree in the plastic to keep it humid? How often did you open it to release stale air?
You should explain why you're cutting the roots!, and advice that some plants would die if you cut roots like that!
So those roots don't come out of the pot simple
You should do an update on this tree! I love it!!

where can i get this beat? any help?
To smoothen and heal the big cut, you shouldn't prune all the time. Let it grow and thicken up.
