    Is it just casting out to a sphere with the radius set as the distance from the first point of contact with the terrain?

      No, that only works with signed distance functions and is a technique known as sphere tracing

      Exactly! That's why it's ray-traced. There's only the voxel data. No mesh!

      @@GabeRundlett oh you are ray-marching in the shader? I've watched stuff on ray-marching but I don't get it. I see the benefits but I'm too math noob.
