@Simi Hanniel poeple can make judgements on characters based on texts. How do you think people know that Voldemort is worse than Harry Potter? How do people judge morally grey characters like Snape? I think Voldemort and the god of the bible are worse people than other characters for the same reasons, they are both power hungry and kill innocent people.
In fact, it should be harder to prefer other characters to God than Voldemort because their texts are written for followers and fans of the 'good side', and history is written by the winners, so it should be harder for the character of God to be seen as a villain.
Ps I would love to read a book where it is all written purely from the perspective of the villain (besides the bible because it's a really boring read)

I just think the idea of god is sad. Human beings are so afraid of being abandoned that they would rather live in a world made by a abusive father figure. then accept reality for what it is.
back in the day, conversion to christianity back in the day, wasn't exactly a choice. and after that, it basically has made itself the sole moral monopoly of our civilization. its indoctrination and societal control, not so much of a choice that humans would naturally make from a nutral position.

blakkwaltz I don’t think the idea is sad, especially back in ancient times. I don’t believe in it but it’s a very interesting idea. Living and understanding the world can be very terrifying for people back then. Creating something like a God helps ease that anxiety and dread about the world. Figuring out what reality is and isn’t is not easy and we only get to where we are now in terms of our understanding of the world thanks to thousands of years of scientific and technological revolution. So I don’t think the idea of god is a sad one, it’s actually quite interesting how the human race came up with this idea to deal with existential problems as our intelligence evolved.

I grew up in a Christian house hold. While I still carry much respect for my family's beliefs, AND hope that they continue to have faith, I myself am an atheist. I became a non believer in the most incredible way. I actually took the time to read the damn book. I would never wish to take something away from someone that gives them such a sense of purpose, however I am perturbed that they continuously try to push they're beliefs on me. When asked questions about my lack of faith I simply tell them: please don't make me answer that. It will destroy the foundation on which you live your life. I am a good person, my morality is based on civility and respect. I don't fear the afterlife, because I don't believe there is one.

Why is their religion any more valid than all of the other supernatural views of life? Religious beliefs are a denial of our capacity for thinking and reasoning using evidence obtained by appropriate means, instead of trusting to faith alone. It was not faith that rescued the astronauts aboard Apollo 13, but one of the most outstanding examples of human ingenuity and inventiveness in all of recorded history. No ‘God’ or any other deity did anything about it! Continue to think for yourself and wonder at the achievements of humanity in the face of religious oppression.

I would never shut down a conversation if someone was legitimately questioning they're own, but if they're asking me to justify my own I find they are more or less just looking for an argument. Oddly enough, my wife is a Christian, (though she really just cherry picks what she likes) and her very existence is a contradiction. Good created me gay, but inspired Peter to dictate that Im an abomination, and should be stoned, but I'll listen to the Christian radio and tell you why your morality in the wrong name is your ticket to hell. She has an anxiety problem, and swears that her all knowing god watching her every move and deed good or bad is comforting, which sounds nerve wracking than anything. I just think there's more pressing issues than who's right in that area. I don't push my agenda on anyone unless it's political, and you better believe THIS progressive lesbo never backs down to a conservative bully. Because THAT'S a real issue. That’s a really dark road, actually. A big hang up within the religious circles is what happens to babies if they die, obviously they haven’t had time to “accept” Jesus, so the general consensus is that they just get a free pass to heaven. That sounds nice until you realize that, if you truly believe in all that, the best thing you can do for your kids is to kill them as babies and guarantee they go to heaven, rather than letting them grow up and risk the possibility of their deconversion.
We’re not the people who need reminding, but, man, Christianity is seriously fucked up when you hold it up to just the slightest bit of scrutiny!

You *know* they don't exist, but you're still terrified of being alone at night in a creaky house. Bridges were the worst. After a long time of no smitings, I realized it was ok. It gets better.

Attributing natural disasters to Acts of God is a perfect example of, by thousands of years, outdated ignorance persisting into the modern world. Long ago people knew nothing about weather and atmospheric phenomena in general except that they were awesome, powerful and could affect their lives in extreme ways and divine personification was the only way to rationalize those things. Today we know what the Sun is and how lightning is created and why eclipses happen yet they still get connected to divine entities.
