Going back about 2,000 years ago in history, Ymir Fritz obtained the power of the Titans and became the first Titan, he is the Founding Titan. Thirteen years after acquiring her powers, she eventually died, and her power was then shared and passed on to her 3 daughters. Eventually, these powers split even further, and gave rise to 9 distinct Titans, which were later inherited by 9 of her descendants.
