Did you consider using 2 double-acting cylinders instead of 4 single acting ones? It occur to me that on top of reducing the number double acting cylinders make pressurizing the engine easier because the piston leaks into another cylinder, also pressurized to the same average pressure and not to the outside world or carter.

There were only single acting cylinders considered as this is typical for hot air engines. Double acting cylinders make the design even more complicated, like a need for piston rod sealing, friction, etc.
